Has a (GW) store employee ever lied to you or gave you crap advice to get you to buy stuff?

I had some guy tell me that GW primer is the only primer that works and any other brand will ruin your model

Not to me, no (though I was told that the internet was full of lies about GW products when I was talking to one staffer after 6th was released); I did go into GW Bluewater a couple of years ago and hear one member of staff telling a mother with GW's target market in tow (a small child of about 13) that other brands of paint and glue will melt and damage the models.

Unfortunately he was on the other side of the store (which was rammed as it was just after Christmas) and I was in a rush so did not get a chance to go over and say something to him.

Also, to add to your story; GW doesn't actually sell primer, it is just black and white spraypaint.

Well that's just not true. If you've ever tried to strip models you've sprayed you will see that the primer spray has bonded to the plastic. Just because it doesn't say "Primer" on the can doesn't mean it isn't primer.

I think you will find this phenomenon in any sales job where the employee in question has limited knowledge of the subject. Every store clerk might do this to you, especially if new or slightly unscrupulous.

I've had plastic models sprayed with GW's "primer" have the spray just... flake off

Granted they were sitting around in a box/on a shelf for a few years, but were not mishandled in any other way

My LGS must be the only place that lies to AVOID selling models. Seriously, "GW wouldn't sell me product unless I paid $400" or "I didn't get your Warhammer Invasion cards because the GW order hasn't come in". Priceless.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

GW and not GW, i hate it when you purchase something online, send them the money and THEN they tell you that they're out of stock and you have to wait a week+ for them to get the models for you :/

No, of course i didnt want it in a timely manner, thats not why I paid for express shipping at all.

GW employee told me VC zombies were a good unit. This was before I even bought my first fantasy unit or knew anything about it.

Never again GW employees, never again.

Haha, I get given plenty of awful tactical advice by a clerk at my local FLGS. Whenever I counter him with logical reasons why units are awful his response is "but they look cool".

Yes, I'm sure the £30 price tag looks awesome, let's just leave it on the shelf.

I've had employees tell me something wrong, maybe not to sell models, but in general (rules, technicalities, the little things) that I know for a fact are wrong, but they genuinely believe it true.

All sales people lie, when i worked in a shop and if i didnt know the answer i sold them whatever BS would get them out of my face, not because i'm a bad person but because after 10 years in retail my cup of care wasnt just empty it had fallen apart and been put in the bin.

Here's the shocking truth...sales people dont like you, they dont care about anything you have to say, they arnt your friend they just want you to buy your stuff and feck off so they can get their other jobs done.

Sales people get pressured into doing add on sales, they dont want to do it but they have to or face being sacked.

Me i refused to sell store cards and unneeded insurance to people who could not afford it and were too stupid to realise it was a rip off, but not everyone can intimidate their bosses into silence like me, we arnt all 6ft tall and able to lift 35kg over their head with no trouble.

The guy at my GW is running snipers, vox casters, and tons of heavy bolters on his Vostroyans.

He's offered advice on things for me to get.

Nicest guy in the world, but he's still learning about what's good and what's crap in 40k

The dude's have ridiculous sales goals and if they don't meet them they can kiss their crummy retail job goodbuy. They may not do it to intentionally be dishonest or mean, but if what they say gets you to buy something, well, that's their job.

Luckily our guy isn't the kind to be dishonest from what I can tell, but I'm sure there's stores out there where the guy will go "Oh yeah, ratlings and eradicators are super good. You should get as many as you can. You'll crush everyone."

Indeed, that 4th piece of text was entirely unneeded and really shot down everything else he was trying to say. Boasting about how strong or intimidating you are, is laughable, either in person or on the internet.

I worked in the stock room carrying round flat pack furniture which was 18-22kg per part and most had 2 bits you had to carry up 2 flights of stairs because the lift was always broken, in the hot summer i humped about cheap patio furniture and in the winter it was karaoke machines and vacuum cleaners trust me friend when you do that day in day out you build stamina and strength especially when your always under staffed, which was another reason the bosses could never cross you because if they fired you they would not be able to hire replacements without a fight.

Out side of that job i'm a perfectly reasonable person but when i was in that building my cries of anger and frustration would often echo through the back rooms, many things some heavy some light would fly through the air as i searched for items that had not been put in their proper place by the porters because they didnt give a gak either.

I know fishmongers who've threatened customers with fillet knives, retail is stressful because your never given the help you need and are always asked for more until you break either quitting because you cant take it anymore or finding the inner strength to say your mad as hell and arnt gonna take it anymore.

If you've never worked in that environment you cant understand what a normally nice person can be driven to, so try not to be too hard on the staff they are doing what they are told to earn a pitiful wage.

I've worked retail too. Something about that line of work just makes you hate everything. So I can sympathize with what the guy is saying. I may not condone it, but I've felt the same about many of the things he does (Store credit cards and tricking people into giving their personal information especially are complete and utter bullcrap)

I'm normally really nice to people and friendly, but when I spent a while at Toys R' Us and Babies R Us I wanted to strangle half the people that walked through that door.

You should always try to make the most of your situation in retail, but I do not blame most people whatsoever when they're in a badmood. I just hope that they know how to deal with it and still try to help the customer if possible. Lord knows I've had to do it more than a few times when I didn't want to.

Well, back in 7th and now that VC's have their new book, Zombies in large numbers are good for tarpitting non-deathstars for a few turns or more!
Or else just raising them from scratch to misdirect/block an enemy unit is also a pretty solid way to use the deadheads...

And at least with all the extra heads/arms/corpses/tombstones i nthe zombie box, with a few extra bases you can turn a box of 20 into about 30+

As for GW employees lying?
One guy who used to work at the local store before he was fired was enough of a donkeycave to sell the old $50 metal/plastic hybrid Devastator Squad box to a customer...
...the same week we all knew damn well that the plastic ones were getting released! (we even had the new stock sitting in the back of the store, waiting to go on the shelf come Saturday morning)

Not everyone follows the rumor-mongering or reads forums.

So of course as it happens, this same customer comes back into the store the following week, looking for help getting those crummy old metal/plastic nightmares built. I ask him why did he buy the old set when the plastics were so close to release AND come with extra weapons to boot...
He damn near cried a man tear, and then got rightly pissed that he'd been had by an unscrupulous employee.

What's really sad though, after helping him learn how to pin/green stuff a couple of his Devies, I told him I'd explain to the manager what had happened and see if there wasn't anything that could be done to compensate him for effectively being wallet-raped...
...Only our manager had stopped caring about giving real customer service by then, shrgged his shoulders and said "tough luck, can't change anything."

That cost us a pretty good customer for well over a year as he rightly took his buisness elsewhere.

See if you had put that to begin with, fine wouldnt be so bad, as its was though "im 6ft and can lift X" when put like that just makes you (and anyone) sounds like a weedy mini neckbeard trying to look tough on the internet, and will anywhere outside actual fitness or lifting threads. Posts like that tend to be followed up by (at least in stereotype) with gak like "i could beat you in a fight in RL hur hur" or similar posing.

And nope never in retail, Dell repairline with the sort of supervisors who seemed to think you can fix the magic picture box by turning it off and on again now THATS frustrating.

I was more amused at the notion of a grown man being intimidated by someone who can lift 77 pounds over their head myself.

But I can agree with most of his post, I'm currently working as a Walmart Unloader, and while thankfully I don't have to deal with customers quite as often due to mostly working in the backroom (Though this has the added consequence of being management's little nancy bitch), working in retail makes you really appreciate the depths human hatred can reach. With salesmen (Like, in Walmart, people running a specific department, specifically electronics), they basically have to lie or mislead, in order to sell product.

So yeah, salesmen, GW or otherwise, will attempt to mislead you in order to make mo money.

This is a key recent one, selling a poor game to unsuspecting marks.

However, let's be realistic GW staff have sales targets and their jobs depend upon them. In retail this is a major problem as to some extent this is put of your hands, customers buying or not buying is based on multiple factors not just what the staff say or do. If targets look like being missed it has to be human nature to try and save yourself by taking advantage. If you get someone who knows little or clearly has lots of money and isn't sure what to buy then advising they buy stock you need to shift but can't or expensive kits to boost your figures, that's just nature.

Back in the olden days (the early 90s) GW had varioous rules such as: discourage regular customers as they don't spend they just shoot the breeze, sell as much as you can in value and quantity. They had secret shoppers who tested that these things were not happening and they often sacked entire shop staffs when they were not happy. I know, I was there when it happened.

People have jobs, bills, etc. Advising someone to buy troops that some people think aren't worth the points, etc is hardly a mage crime. Do we expect GW to have a math-hammer terminal installed to work out the exact value ratios of every unit? Many, many gamers play to simply build a cool army or paint the figures and never game with them. If we are going to criticise them it needs ot be for something that is fair, like dumping stock from a soon to be ended game line or something really, genuinely bad.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

I agree, retail is possibly the worst job sector out there. Especially when your company gives you unreasonable sales targets.
I don't enjoy being hounded by GW employees, so I don't go in GW, but it's not like on your resume to apply for GW you need to put "enjoy bothering people and pushing low selling products on people" it just sort of happens when they're given stupid targets.

What I'm trying to get at, is that it's the company policy; not the people who work that that drives them to such annoying acts.
