Nice work, winterdyne. What else are you planning to add to this army?

The full (heh) army is:
3x 24 archers
3x 18 bill
12 mounted men at arms (heavy cavalry)
12 courrers (light cavalry)
10 or 12 dismounted men at arms (still deciding)
Dismounted and mounted general options
Dismounted and mounted standard bearer options
18 mercenary pike
10 mercenary handgun
10 mercenary crossbow
3 light cannon (probably one of which will be painted in Burgundian colours)

All for less than £250 iirc. Dirty cheap.
I'll eventually expand the mercenaries into a full Burgundian ordonnance.

That does seem a good price for that army.

3 boxes of bow and bill, one of mercenaries, one of mounted men at arms- that's £90 for the bulk of it. Can't remember what the other blisters cost, but I think the total is actually under £200...

Those are wonderful miniatures, do they match up to fantasy as well as these pics would suggest? If so, are you using them for fantasy games?

I've added slotta bases from a third party. Scale wise, they're slimmer and shorter than standard gw (about the same height when mounted on a base like this, but there's a good 2mm of integrated base to take into account. 'True' 28's.

This said, the difference isn't that noticeable unless you up them right next to each other. I might see if I can get an Empire or Bretonnian list out of them, but we don't play WFB in my gaming group.

I like these, you are a fine painter. Perry do some nice miniatures and I'm looking forward to all the rest!

Warhammer ancients, for mass battles. We are looking at changing, possibly for Clash of Empires or Hail Caesar. Necromunda, last night on earth, few other board games etc. real mixed bag.

My group is looking for historical, either field of glory or pike and shoote. 30yrs war mostly, also some local wars like Paraguay and the Regency period revolts If you ever try these post your impressions, its really hard to decide on a good game nowdays.

Also, following your stuff since the Sanguinary Phalanx!

Eep, didn't realise I'd not updated this thread.

I get less time to work on this project than I'd like (a cobbler's shoes are never mended as my dad used to say). My friend and I kind of decided that it was better to build 3 or 4 retinues per side (each being between 1250 and 2000 pts) rather than 2 huge ones. This allows us to play smaller games, and have different elements in different colour schemes.

This said, I've just finished the main paintwork on the archers of Richard Duke of York's retinue (the opposing retinue to this). Basing and decals to do still, so not quite ready for showcase. :-)

The billmen for Richard are still being basecoated.

Now, back to Stafford's Retinue, I did finish them off; taking some liberties with banners (horizontal divide rather than vertical, though I may change this back), and adding a unit of French handgunners. It's about 1500 points in total:

These are I suppose a pretty good example of what I consider a nice tabletop standard.

I think that sure beats 'table top standard' as those are some gorgeous minis.

Pretty much that, if that's "TT Standard" I guess it's better for me to destroy my painting supplies and sacrifice my minis to the god of painting

Excellent work, I love how those gothic armored knights look <3 Such a sexy armor. And so many tiny free-handed symbols, wow.

The symbols are all decals. I'd be mad to freehand that many.

Great free hand on your commander.

The only poorly painted miniature is the one that is not painted.

Not yet. It's one of those 'only with fully painted armies' promises. So we've got a bit of work to do on Richard of York's lot before we get our first games in. Late spring next year I think.

Then we're moving on with more - the size of the overall project has increased to encompass the first few battles of the Wars of the Roses (1 St Albans, Blore Heath, Ludford Bridge), which should give us a few colour schemes on each side to play with.

Those are fantastic. freehand is amazing and the metal is just fantastic.

I like the flags, but if you think that they are too stiif, have you tried dragging them through a little bit of watered down PVA glue? I've had great luck with canvas/bedrolls, etc. Not sure if it would be a pain with flags though.

Great work, I love this army.

The flags (livery banners) are supposed to be stiff. Authentically, they're stiffened canvas, usually supported by an internal bolster piece of wood both top and bottom as well.

Finished the basing on York's archers. Still have to do the decals, but I need to decide on the 3rd retinue we'll do for Yorkists (York, Warwick and... who?) first:

Oh sorry, misread that earlier, thought you were thinking of making them wavy.

I am torn about it, on the one hand reference materials say they should be quite stiff, always on the fly. On the other, having a wave to them looks nice and give more life to the unit.

Fantastic! Exceptional painting and the actual project theme kindles the nerdliest fires of my hobby loins

Are those Perry miniatures? I am really seriously considering picking up their European mercenaries and dismount and mounted knight lines to make an empire army.
