Basic 'standard' tests for my personal army. Time taken around 35-40 minutes per mini (not including drying or procrastination).

My army's based around the Stafford family (Humphrey 1st Duke of Buckingham, and Henry the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, also Henry Earl of Wiltshire).
This provides a strong red and black colour scheme for the whole army and a variety of heraldic devices I can use to differentiate units and characters. I am not OCD when it comes to accuracy. :-p

Very nice start. Out of curiosity, why Wiltshire?

I only ask as having lived in Wiltshire for ~2 years myself I choose a lot of Wiltshire and related families when painting my Norman conquest minis and curious if you have a similar reason.

Yeah, these are Perry. I grew up in Stafford, and wanted to use the Stafford knot. My reenactment group was Lancastrian too, so if I add any further households, they'll also be Lancastrian.

Having previously lived in Staffordshire (just down the road from Stafford ) for about 20 years, it is good to see you using the Stafford family

Are they 28mm? Also were did you get the flag from?

1. Go to FLGS on a 40K game night.
2. Announce to no one in particular "I have over 10,000 points of Space Marines".
3. Sit back and watch as some 30-ish Neckbeard who still lives with his parents not only disputes your claim, but goes on to describe his 30,000 points of Blood Angels and how he has been playing since Rogue Trader days... And yet you will have never seen him either play 40K or that army.
4. From here, you have several options. Continue the conversation, or just end it. Either way, I guarantee you will waste 1+ hour of your life talking to this guy. Have fun!

Yeah, they're 28's (from Perry Miniatures). I printed the flag, but I don't really like it. I'll probably replace it with a sculpted one and a decal at some point, but for now it will do.

Gathering the Informations.

Perry miniatures are gorgeous sculpts and you've done a tremendous job with them, winterdyne.

The flag looks pretty nice to my own eye, but maybe bending it or attaching the paper to foil would make it look a bit more natural?

I have a number of Perry's First Crusade miniatures. While their minis do still have plenty of flash, overall I have to say they are possibly the best of tied with the best sculpted minis I've ever seen.

They are simply amazing. The only ones I've seen that compare are Empress Minis modern warfare troopers.

So good choice of folks to build up from. I heartily approve.

And then there were 10. And a movement tray.

Next up is one of my units of 24 archers... might take a while!

I hate painting archers in 15mm...never tried them in 28mm. Another question: How did you make the leaves on the bases. They make the unit look AMAZING!

Very nice! Looking forward to more. Always a big, big fan of gothic plate armor.

Mind dropping a link to the models you used?

Up to 16 archers... 8 more to go in this unit (and I need to make a couple of 32-man trays to accept the stakes too)... total time should work out at about 90 minutes per archer by the time I put the decals I've designed on.

The archers are very well done.

It makes me want to get back to my Saga Normans after a long hiatus.

These look really nice! Can you share the steps you did on how you painted them up so fast? I'm having some Perry plastics of my own and just the thought of painting at least 40 of them daunts me.

Batch painting, using premixed colours and judicious use of wash stages.

Base coats were:
Tallarn Flesh on the faces
VMA gunmetal on the metal
Panzer Aces Light mud on padded jacks
VGC Heavy Sienna or Heavy Brown on boots / leather
VGC Heavy Brown on bows and wood.
VGC Heavy Bluegrey on white cloth (some shirt sleeves) and arrow feathers.
VMC Burnt Cadmium Red on the Red
VMC Black on the Black

Agrax Earthshade wash on everything but the faces (Reikland Fleshshade on those).

It's this bit that makes it fast - being able to splosh wash (only really needing to avoid the face) saves a lot of time.

Highlight stages are pretty simple too - sticking to out of the bottle progressions rather than mixing too much (just now and then for extremes).

Paint a rank at a time - saves your sanity - while the wash is drying on the first rank, do the basecoats on the second, then go do the details and highlights on the first while the wash is drying on the second.

Oooh that's VMA gunmetal. I was wondering about that. Most silvers I find too bright, while some gunmetal colors I find too dark. I can always mix a color i want if I wanted to, but it's a pain in the posterior if especially when painting a million units so good thing it comes in a shade that's just right.

Thanks for the tips! I've only painted speed painted en masse for commissions and results never really satisfied me, so maybe this time I can do something I would actually appreciate.
