Aye! I do play bebop drums and cam, to be honest, i LOVED your orca trooper. I feel like you really exemplified the spirit of the competition. Im going to paint a mini also in your color scheme. Because i want to. Weety, yeaaa...tough break, its so close i mean the scores reflected judges that some models agreed and some were really different. But bothof your entries are gorgeous, as always.

Fantastic comp Bebop! A real pleasure *and a challenge*. Got me painting a figure I'd never have painted otherwise!

Thank you!

Congrats to everyone who participated. Such fantastic entries! Really an honor to "take the field" with you all.

Excellent work all around, congrats to the winners and cheers to everyone participating. And thanks to Bebop for putting it up and running it, and the judges for their work in this!

Great challenge, and put me to paint figures, something I don’t usually do! Lots of room for improvement for me, and an amazing display gallery to learn from.

I’d really care for the details of my score, and any other feedback the judges might have if you find the time, it’s all about learning and improving after all!

See you in the next round!

Oh man...

What can I say ?
Thank you !

Thanks to anyone that voted for my color-scheme. I'm really pleased to see that originality is rewarded. I really wanted to do something that nobody else would. So pleased that other people here like that color choice.
And I must admit that it makes me laugh that Bebop will have to use that color scheme on a Guardsman himself.

Thanks to the judges. I didn't expect to win when I first got that PM from Bebop weeks ago, asking me if I wanted to join the contest. So glad I said "ok, let's go !". ^_^

Thanks to Bebop, for organizing all that. As I already said, it was really fun to see all those color schemes coming day after day. I loved that.

Thanks to all contestants. As a whole group we built up a nice display. Good job everyone.

I'm curious to see what's coming next as contest. I really enjoyed this one.

(and thanks Gits for screwing your model, allowing me to win that contest ! No, just kidding, it looks great mate ! )

Edit : I'm interested in getting notes and comments about my entry.

Ok.
Nash:
I loved your mini. Where i think you lost points was a matter of patience. It seemed like certain parts of the model you spent alot of time on. Others seem rushed. Cloth and Base are fantastic, where skin looked a little grittier. Also, not quite sure what you were going for with the grey on black edge highlighting. San docked you because he thought it came across sloppy. I THINK you were going for a weathered chipped paint look but truth be told it did not come across like that. I does look like sloppy edge highlighting, and i think its in part to the application. Some chips and scratches not just on the edges, for example, could have helped the eye understand what you were trying to convey. You also lost points on a hurried kit. But truth be told, your model was an extremely strong contender. One of my favorites...

I'm also interested in a public critique. I rushed my model on the last day and never got around to what I wanted to do, so I have a good feeling I know where I lost points, but it's always helpful to know where to improve!

I came 5th??

I honestly wasn't expecting to come anywhere near like 5th. Not with that level of competition.
Well done to Minus on the win. Much deserved, mate. And well done to Nerdy, Gits and Wheety on 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.

Thanks to Bebop for running the comp and the judges for taking the time to score, much appreciated. And of course thanks to everyone who ended and made it such a fierce comp.
Can't wait till next time!

If I could get some critiques from the judges that would be awesome. PM'd or in this thread would be fine. What ever is easier for you guys.

You werent 10th on my list but its a compiling of 3 judges whose opinions on certain models varied greatly. Be proud of your work, your model was really well done! Especially the base. The orange glow especially really looks great. And your color scheme from base to helm was concise and well constructed. Kudos!

Wow! I knew Minus had it in the bag! :-) from when we first saw his trooper it was the perfect entry for the comp! a deserved win for ya mate! I'm actually suprised I came top 4! I thank you all for buoying my painting spirit, there was on every single entrant something that I found intriguing or clever, which in my mind makes each one a winner! that's what the hobby community is about!

Do you need the color references that I used ? Or is it part of the challenge to get the same color tones ?

Purple is coming !

Thank you Nerdfest. I love your work, and I know you especially like pinks and purples. So I'm doubly honoured by your nice comments.

Minus I already took the guardsman challenge with my snow trooper:p i won't use your exact mix but it'll be as close as it gets. It's more my interpretation of your scheme than an exact recreation. That would be pointless and no fun.

Congrats...
I voted for you because of the contrast you choose and your highlights that made the model pop. Great Color choices and awesome highlights. I especially enjoyed the highlight on the gun.

As I said with my vote, Minus, I've actually used that scheme! Just, in video game format. My 69th Cadian Trooperth in Dawn of War 2 were hot pink with super dark black camo. I did it initially as a joke (could you tell by the regiment name?) but it ended up being so striking I kind of secretly fell in love with it. I think I've even got screenshots uploaded into my Steam profile from like 2 years ago as proof.

There were a lot of people in this competition who did amazing work, really and truly. I just had to vote for Minus' scheme. I was compelled for reasone beyond my understanding.

Congrats to everyone who participated! This was a great contest and it was awesome to see all the variations on the same basic IG trooper. Lots of ideas here that I can use to provide some variety in my remaining 100+ unpainted troopers.

If the judges have time I'd love to get a breakdown on my scores and any feedback I get would go a long way to improving future models I paint. Either PM or in thread, whatever works. Thanks!

Alright everyone! I dunno if the other judges got back to you via PM or not, but im finally back from tour for 2 weeks, which gives me just enough time to send off everyones prizes and paint up minus' mini as well! So im going to go ahead and do a public run down for those of you who asked regarding the notes on their scores. I will preface this with one thing that really sums up most the entries. Layering vs. Blending and smooth transitions. This is a technique that is important to tackle in terms of the competition rubrics, this one in particular. A Clean layering on my score card got you a 3. The smoother your transitions got, the higher up that score went. Many people don't use that technique in your day to day painting, or army painting (my kroot for example, are primarily layered) or what have you, but for compeition work, its pretty much a requirement for upper level placing, and was my primary focus on scoring. With that said, Ill start with LDP:

LDP: As per usual your work is very solid and neat. You produce consistent work all the time. With that said, this competition, and those to come, offer you a chance to step outside of your comfort zone, and or, try new things. I saw none of that on your mini. Your entry was a fantastically painted tabletop standard model. Clean, neat, good scheme. Nothing more, nothing less. With your strong foundation of basic techniques i was hoping to see a little bit more from you. Your overall was 4, relying on your neat style, and your ability to paint eyes. Each component of the miniature could have used more steps and patience were it to contend with the models that beat you out. I gave you a low score on advanced techniques because there pretty much wasnt any, save for the logo, which was nice. A very solid entry, that was outdone by others.

Gits: I was very pleased with your entry. It embodied what this competition is about and you produced a model that i didnt expect, and a lovely and challenging scheme to boot. The other judges gave you higher scores than i did,as i had weety at the number 3 position. The reason for this is that, as stated above, your applications rely heavily on layering, as opposed to wet blending and smooth transitions of color. The models that featured more subtle styles scored higher on my charts. However your base was fantastic and you got 15 points from me on that, better scores than the other placers. I believe san docked you some points on your facework. I gave you a 3 in that category. 4 for cloth and 3 for armor from me. It was a great entry, worthy of placing. One of my favorites.

Camkierhi: You above all really exemplified the spirit of the competition. I was honored that you put so much heart into it. You really tried a ton of things and, just out of garnering experience, you are the true winner! The places where i hit you the most are primarily in neatness and brushcontrol. On the desert trooper i hit you hard with color comp. I really think you should spend some time with some color scheme building tools and a little bit of color theory/color wheel. Maybe look at some interior design and other sources. You take bold chances but often times there is too much contrasting color going on, and they dont always work. I liked the turquoise line but then the lights on the gun just got in the way of what could have been a compelling tertiary color. Less is more! The second trooper was much better thought out, but again, take your time! Practice putting basecoats on a mini as smoothly and neatly as possible. The base lost you points because i wasnt sure what it was supposed to be. But in spirit, i liked your orca trooper immensely and i will paint one just for you Keep up the good work, youre getting bettter by the day. But dont ignore your fundamentals!

Oaka: I think mainly time was your worst enemy. No surprise your color scheme was fantastic and creative. Youve a knack for that. The wood grain was great as well. And the base. It just seemed though the mini was 50% done. Some parts were further along, like the pants, than the rest of the model. The Crimson and black and, especially the skin, looked unfinished to me. Practically a base coat. I trust that if you had more time, none of this wouldve been an issue. Still, it was one of the stronger contenders for me and was suprised at its placement. I expected it to be higher:( Your overall was a 4.

Winterhound: You and gits have pretty much identical Critiques. Super strong schemes on both entries. I loved the warmer one with the turqoiuse osl, thats a scheme worthy of building an army on. I gave you 4 and 5 on creativity and color. You got a 3 in advanced techniques because your osl effect was only semi effective. Keep working on that, theres any ways to skin a cat and alot of it comes down to experimenting and finding what works for you. Your overalls were hit because of, again, layering. youve a solid grasp on it and thats great, but only the first step. For the sake of this competition, those that blended their colors for smooth transitions scored higher on my charts. You overalls were 3 and 4. Great entries.

Littletower: Sadly, alot of your points were lost because the photo was so unclear that i just couldnt see that much. Neatness got you on this one as well. Alot of your color choices were dark, and thats great, but also a little bit tricky. Its a great scheme and i gave you good points for color and creativity. However, It was hard to make out alot of the detail. Make sure that your highlighting helps keep parts seperated even though they are close in color. Start with your basics. Layering and edge highlighting. Practice practice practice. Not enough can be said about the importance of painting thin smooth clean and neat base coats with no texture or brush strokes visible. Its the number one fundamental in mini painting and must be mastered before you can truly get better. Keep practicing!

Have i missed anyone?? Feel free to comment here or pm, or any questions..what have you? Disagree with my thoughts? All good Lets talk about it!!! After comp discussions are the best!
