I honestly think most schools need an "Applying for a job with your college degree" class period or at least a job interviewing course. Nothing huge maybe just two credit hours. A lot of applying for a job is really in the interview.
I agree but I think it would need to be market specific. I can say as an engineer that the career center from my college was all business majors who had no idea how to talk to people in my field and their resume advice was completely wrong.

Agreed. Both colleges I went to had a career center, but the people running it seemed either markedly out of date with the market, or focused heavily on things that didn't really matter.
I don't think employers give a damn how my resume is formated so long as its neat, ordered, legible, and accurate. Spending two hours with me formating my resume (to exacting specifications) is not helpful at all. Telling me how to spin what I know to be applicable to an employer would have been much more useful but I needed to learn that the hard way and a little late for some better job opporunities that got missed.

No gak. When I was a hiring manager, I saw resumes written in many different formats. I didn't care at all. NO ONE cared then or cares now. What we cared about is: to the point, what is your education, what experience do you have that is pertinent to the open job (absolutely the most important), and are there any misspellings or gakky grammar (can be a deal breaker).

While I agree with you, it has been my experience that if your resume does not have the right keywords HR just kicks you out.
For instance, I had a my resume rejected because I had put down "AutoCAD" as a program I knew. However the HR person/computer program that reviewed it rejected it because it was not "AutoCAD Civil3d"
Unfortunately with online applications that kind of gak happens. What is needed in addition to interviewing skills is a course in networking. How to make cold calls, talking with other professionals and so for. Networking is the single best way to get a job. It really is all about who you know more than what you can do.

That's what I mean by spin though. How its formatted doesn't matter. What it says does and what it says should be geared to what you're trying to do and who you're trying to impress. That was never mentioned by the people who came to give us advice about getting jobs senior year. They just went on and on about indentation.
And yeah. Networking is one of the most important aspects of getting a job (not that that was covered either).

I've often wondered how much good those screening programs actually do, as every story I hear about them is like this.

I personally think that they are horse gak. But I am slightly bitter and jaded about it and do the majority of my job searching now through cold calls and networking rather than just sending out applications.

Sometimes I wonder if me not being able to find a job is because the HR employee looking at my resume has no idea what to make of C++, C#, Python, Ubuntu, or Knoppix.

I remember someone once told me to print my Resume Pink and Spray perfume on it.....I mean really? That is going to get me a job?
But in all seriousness, these seem like electives and not intensive classes. IF you are a full time student like me, it is typically 4 classes that go like this. 1 intensive, difficult class that takes up your time(Typically your major or Math or a difficult science) 2 less intensive classes that still require studying, but less of it(Maybe every couple of weeks of intense studying. 1 not easy but not intensive, You show up take notes, read over them a bit before class test, not a whole lot outside, you may never even open a book. These seem like the last kind.
Then you have classes for the begginners to take, Ones that that your get acclimated to collage, where you learn the in and outs of how to game the system, how to game the teachers and manipulate them.

You had a very different class experience than me in college. My courses were 4 that required intensie studying and 1 sluff course

I had 4 years of Chemical Engineering. My only "easy" quarter was my last quarter, where I got my last 3 classes for graduating: Electrical Engineer (3rd in a series, but I don't recall the EE#. I fething hate circuits!), Political Science, and my last Chemical Engineering elective on Process Design (ChE400+, don't recall #).

Outside of graduate programs, Engineering is supposed to be the most time intensive major.

Including labs, my first year engineering timetable was horrific. I had a friend doing dentistry who had a lighter timetable.
It didn't help that I did biomedical engineering which was lectures from every kind of engineering except civil and aero, plus loads of biology and chemistry and stuff... I was running around all over the bloody place
Though I have found postgraduate engineering courses are a lot easier.
Though I too hate electronics

I'm vindicated, yay!
Future engineers, be warned! While in school, you'll have less time to touch boobies than other majors.
