It's like an M Night Shyamalan twist. "Let's cast Sean Bean, and make people think that we kill him, but then... we don't".

So this is a movie with 2 Oscar winner/nominees, Sean Bean and Channing Tatum. And we've all seen movies where the 4 main players are excellent (at least I have anyway).

The Wachowski's (sp?) need to be taken out back and shot. The movie was very pretty. But the fight scenes actually brought back memories of that 40 minutes fight with Agent Smith from Matrix 3 (before I found out it was the same people) i.e. to long and basically pointless.

The actors truly do all they can with what they are given but it's pretty much rubbish. Without the bonus of Giant Robots and Giant Monsters which made Pacific Rim awesome.

Only neat thing in the entire movie is pretty much the little tie-in's to our myths/legends and abductions which are fun.

I really liked this movie. It was amazing visually and really reminded me of dune, which is a good thing.

How come everyone hates the movies I like?

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

I liked it for the same reason you do, in spite of some huge plot holes and head scratchers.

I have no idea. I'm the same with TV shows. I cannot for the life of me figure out why anyone likes Arrow more than Agents of Shield...

I might go and see this, I'm one of the few people who quite liked John Carter and loved the David Lynch Dune so I like the Space Operas the critics have.

I thought about seeing it today but went to see The Kingsmen in the end instead (which is awesome by the way) but I might catch it later in the week.

So its basically Avatar/Pacific Rim.

Now let's be fair to Pacific Rim here. Sure, the main draw of the movie was the monster on robot violence, but to state the film had nothing else going for it completely undersells Idris Ilba's Independence Day speech, the completely legit 'Strayans' family bonding, and the two best characters who have no lines in years, the Russian couple. Seriously, I would watch the hell out of a short film about those Russians.

So in that vein, does Jupiter Ascending's dragonman dude have any cool scenes? That will decide the issue for me.

This movie could have been epic and great.

Mila Kunis was as exciting a dry mop.

They story line was not executed well. Saw where they were going with it, developed slow and easy then jut rushed.

It was a beautiful movie to look at.

Movie kind of highlights on a few issues with what's wrong with sci fi. Focus more on tech and how it works than developing characters and story. Hide crappy dialog with cgi.

at least it didn't have people running in spandex uniforms wearing dollar store military helmets.

Mako was easily the best character in the movie.

Child Mako was pretty cool, but not enough to carry a film. The Russian pilots were like the protagonists of a better film slumming it in this one just to pass the time.

But back onto Jupiter Ascending: how is the supporting cast.

Unlike those though the script is truly terrible. I LOVE John Carter and enjoyed the David Lynch Dune. The difference here is that the dialogue is so bad that 4 seasoned and ranging from good to excellent actors can't do anything with it. Think Ewan McGreggor/Natalie Portman in the Star Wars prequels but actually worse.

But it certainly was pretty! It's one of those things that had so much potential to finally get us a world outside of Star Wars/Star Trek for sci-fi movies and just pooped the bed.

Thank god Guardians of the Galaxy showed you could make a good, fun sci-fi film but that had the Marvel brand to get people to the theatre to see it.

Darn Hulk, if you're saying the script is worse than John Carter / Pacific Rim, I don't think I'll be able to take it... was really considering it too, but I barely made it through those due to the wooden acting / terrible script.

I think Pacific Rim was more honest with itself. It sold itself unabashedly as a giant robot/monster fight flick, and delivered. Any plot/character growth/internal consistency that happened to be included was gravy.

Jupiter Ascending I think wanted to be more. It wanted you to take the world seriously, care about the characters, etc. But the script/acting/consistency just wasn’t there. And it’s not like they didn’t devote footage to try to include it. So you ended up with a movie that had some nice visuals and over the top space opera, but it was diluted with a vague attempt to make a “real” movie , so there was not enough to carry the movie on that alone.

This movie was pretty bad. The 'plot' was laughable. It was flat and full of holes, like swiss cheese. There was no real emotional connection to any of the characters and everything was rushed in a repeated cycle of 'girl gets kidnapped by family member, Channing comes to heroic rescue' with each time being bigger than the last.
There was too much going on that it didn't focus on anything so it felt like a slide show in fast forward.
Bad sci-fi, bad storytelling, bad movie.

And I friggin' loved Pacific Rim.

It was a very pretty movie. And by that I mean the visuals were stunning. The costumes, the ships, the planets, the fight scenes... they were all visually stunning and great to watch.

The dialogue? The plot? The acting? Yeah, don't go see this movie for those things. As it's being compared to Pacific Rim (which is a whole different ball of wax. Apples and Oranges!), you have to view it in the same way. Sit down, turn off your brain, and enjoy the pretty movie. Just don't think about the glaring plot holes, insipid dialogue, or ridiculous acting by Channing Tatum or Mila Kunis.

I feel like too often some geeks will eat up a *terrible* sci-fi/fantasy/superhero genre film, simply because it's a sci-fi/fantasy/superhero genre film.

The Wachkowskis probably fall into that category too...the trouble is that they're the ones actually making the films. I still can't forgive them for what happened to the Matrix trilogy, let alone anything that's come since. I don't even hate Reloaded -- it's flawed, but it looked like they were taking things in some interesting directions at the end of that one. But then Revolutions changed gears AGAIN, and chucked all of the cerebral stuff in favor of two hours of nonsense with kewl visuals.

Someone please make them stop.

I think its because it basically has exact parallels with a bunch of well known anime.

Due to inclimate weather, 22" of snow, I was unable to drag my wife to Jupiter Ascending. Let's be honest, SciFi is always more about concept and looking cool, than great dialouge.

That being said, Pacific Rim is awesome. Those who say otherwise are filthy heretics, and agents of the Inquisition have already been dispatched to investigate, and purge, your deviant behavior. Also, Pacific Rim 2, Pacific Rim: The Animated Series, and a line of Pacific Rim Animated Series and Movie Toys are all in the works.

There are four Transformers movies that argue differently.

There is more than one spectrum of quality when it comes to movies. For example, Burton Batman and The Dark Knight are superior to Adam West's Batman in just about every metric that moviegoers tend to care about, yet West's Batman is far more re watchable and quotable for me because it is fun rather than good.

Godzilla 2014 is more highly regarded than Godzilla Final Wars, but I know which film I'd prefer to watch again.

Hqving some time to mull the movie over the weekend, I've come to one conclusion, its the Matrix, but not. The basic plot follows similar conventions, albeit with a lot more repetition in themes.

Still great scenery porn, but that's about it.

That's fair.

Can you name me 3 action oriented sci fi movies with great dialouge, and not just a few cool one liners ?

Ending was pretty clichée though. Gronk is overhyped. Raccon is awesome.

That is exactly how far I got in my head when I asked the question, which is why I asked for 3.

With SciFi it's almost become as if between action, special effects, and great dialouge, you are forced to pick 2 to get a movie made.
