Anyone knows if the rumors about 9th being closer to w40k in rules then 8th is true ?

Iron Captain, why do assume that the story can only advance when Chaos does something? It could easily advance by having the Empire push up through Kislev, or conquer the Border Princes. The Dwarfs could make headway, the Elves could take a city off Naggaroth, or the Lizardmen could all end up in the WE Mountains on some great mission. There are lots of places the story could have gone besides "Chaos always wins! Even when it loses, it wins!"

Hell a simple "DE have invaded and taken Ulthuan and all HE are now refugees amongst the old world" would have been sufficient advancement. Or a campagn where at the end Nagash rises & undead legions becomes a thing. Each end times book could likely have been it's own advancement through the editions without needing to end the world.

firstly, thanks for all the replies. i read everyones posts and thought they were really interesting. ive came to a final conclusion. basically i doubt that whfb will stop selling its just because less people are buying because they dont know what to expect. i dont know if anyones noticed but 10th ed will probably happen after 9th ed. there are many things gw could do if you look at my previous posts. and even if not gw could still release models or even a new game altogether. but realistically they wont need to as whfb wont die for years yet to come.

I've pretty much taken Shas'O Dorian's route. I'm not going to worry about the sky falling, but I'm also not going to buy any more GW until I find out SOMETHING. In the meantime, Wyrd is getting plenty of my money.

I'm waiting to see what happens. Snapping up some Night Goblins here and there and biding my time. I DO think they could have advanced the story without going all George RR Martin on the Old World's cast of characters, but that's just me. We shall see what there is to see.

I bought a box of Wrathmongers, Gutspume, and the new Khorne character.

I firmly believe the end times models will stay.

Have you painted up the Khorne guy? I really hate how he looks on official photos, but suspect that he would look better with a different paint scheme (like Warlocks and their oddly highlighted horses).

Just bought him, he's getting shipped. I'll paint him up as soon as I can. I suspect I'll be leaving the flails off of his axes.

Yeah, ditching the ET models would be craziness given how new the sculpts are. I'm certain they'll stick around as well.

No. I stopped playing WHFB at 6th edition. I moved to HOTT (Hordes of the things) and WH40K for a while, but I do want to play 9th, believe it or not.

Cheers Kaptin. I was testing a theory of mine, that no one currently playing 8E is particularly excited about 9E. Seems to be holding

I've played two games of 8th. I'm sitting on End Times models and daemons only, ready to jump in if what I have is viable come 9th, or if I only have to buy models that make me go "ZOMG, must has!!!"

You're not disappointing anyone. Very few people are of the "Boycott 9th" mentality. Most of us are of the "We'll see what it is" mentality. If you like it more power to you, I'll play as well if I like it. The issue is the rumours are so wild & often conflicting it leaves us disillusioned for now. I don't want to paint up my horde of executioners if they go away in 9th.

I play 8th and I am excited for 9th. I'm excited for the skirmish style of play at lower levels and having various ways to play the game depending on what I'm looking for (skirmish or mass battle) most importantly i am excited to be mixing these two styles of play together in a narrative campaign.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

I'm waiting. If 9th kills the game I'll get rid of my WoC. If not then cool time to paint some angry Vikings.

sadly I can see it happening, however foolish it would be. GW have already done some foolish things recently e.g. chaos always wins no matter what (which is just boring tbh), codex craftworlds, absolutely tearing the existing fluff to shreds with ET, etc.
however, if this is the case I predict a lot of upset customers who spent £70 or so on the nagash and glottkin models as well as the ones who forked over £45 for the new books plus all those who spent money on the extras like models for undeath spells and arcane fulcrums, only for them to become useless 6 months after their release
I personally hope the rumor about the three ways to play the game are true as I would definitely continue to play the two existing versions as well as the skirmish game.

I don't think the End Times models will be discontinued, although I wouldn't be surprised if some (or even all) of them are eventually moved to direct only.

Like it's already happened with quite a bit of stuff.

Progress is like a herd of pigs: everybody is interested in the produced benefits, but nobody wants to deal with all the resulting gak.

GW customers deserve every bit of outrageous princing they get.

GW has a lot of competition in this genre, namely Warmahordes and Malifaux.

I have played Warmahordes pretty loyally for 11 years and it's a great game. The learning curve is steep and can be discouraging. The game can end very quickly with an assassination.

I have played WHFB over the years and I like that it's pretty beer & pretzels. It involves strategy, but nowhere near the intense, frantic strategy of Warmahordes.

So, same genre, basically, but two very different games.

Does WHFB have any gas left in its tank with all of this competition and with the utterly stupid way GW treats its fans and retailers?

Do people want to paint upwards of 300 minis to play a 2500 point game with little to no play testing by the manufacturer?

Do people want to spend $1000's of dollars to build an army? Will that army be competitive when the next Codex comes out?

The answer to all of these questions depends on GW. They have the fans, the overall system is pretty good, they make great models(except for Finecrap), and they have a niche in the market.

The question is, how do they market, play test, develop, and perpetuate WHFB in the future?

If I were them, I would base it off of game system models that work, namely Magic the Gathering.

They could introduce a Core Book with the rules and all of the base units for each army, kinda like PP does in Prime and Primal.

Then they could introduce a Campaign Setting Book with terrain guidelines, fluff about the pocket dimension, new Characters for each army, and Avatars. They could add to this world through Compendiums that further the fluff, introduce new characters, and expand playable missions. They can also use these to rebalance the armies. After two-three years of fighting in this pocket dimension, they could draw a close on that storyline and move onto another one, thus ending the block.

In the next storyline, your old characters are defunct. Avatar characters could advance because they should be able to transcend time, space, and dimension, much like Planeswalkers in MtG.

The newly defunct Characters can join the Olde World Characters in a Legacy type setting, so will still be playable, just not in the new pocket dimension.

Your Core Units and Kits would always be valid and could be updated with bits to fit the aesthetic of the New Campaign Setting, as an option.

This would make old players happy, bring in new players, balance the game, and let GW sell a ton of minis, but that's just my two cents.

Good points, very interesting things to consider.

I started out playing WarmaHordes, and a friend got me into playing Warhammer Fantasy. I preferred the mass army scale so I devoted my limited free time to Fantasy. Now that AoS has dropped and there's no indication of a mass army game option I think I'll go back to WarmaHordes.
