Ledgers joker was Tom Waits in facepaint. I love Tom Waits, but homicidal comedian he is not.

That being said, Ledgers joker at least looked the part.

Nicholson's was quite close to source material of the day. Ledger's version is also really close to source material... just different source material.

Comic books evolve and change over time, and as the last time this argument came up on Dakka it was pointed out repeatedly that all 3 major portrayals of the J fit into their respective worlds/settings, and each is based off of it's era's source material.

Just don't show the next couple pics from that issue, Plat! There's a reason it's shrink wrapped on the shelves.

Isn't this a little like Morrisons latest Joker? Didn't read any of it but some of the cover art was lean skin head/Calvin Klein model/ bill the butcher mashup stuff. Looks like they just added tattoos.

For my part, I'm just gonna remember the gnashing of teeth when Heath Ledger got cast in the role for TDK.

Yes, lightning can strike twice, but what are the odds? While I don't expect this to match Ledger's brilliance, I am still hopeful.

I don't like it much. I'll wait to actually see it, but it doesn't look very good.

Then again as people have pointed out, Heath Ledger didn't seem to be right for the part either. But we were wrong then, we could be wrong now.

He seems to be the crazed maniac that Ledger wasn't. Ledger was nutz, but he was a anarchist. This guy seems less of a watch the world burn and more of start the fire that burns it.

I honestly thought it was an article about Marilyn Manson on Yahoo news at first glance, and then saw "the joker" and did a double-take.

Was it All Star Batman and Robin where the Joker had the big back tattoo? He was more serial killer than comic foil, though it may have been a different book.

This looks like the sort of Joker that has been through the system a few times. Which considering the Suicide Squad is made up of captured villains, would make sense. I'm willing to give it a shot.

For a one off I don't care much, but the 'Damaged' tattoo on the forehead seems a bit much.

I don't really care for the teeth but then I am not a fan of metal teeth anyway so I imagine that plays a part. Someone did point out that Batman has probably knocked his teeth/jaw around a few times so that might be why he has them done, which would make some sense.

I hope he does a good job, but that doesn't mean I can't think the forehead tattoo is a bad one.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

This is assuming that Heath Ledger was a good Joker. He was pretty good at playing a character, but it's arguable if that character was the Joker, any more than Christian 'Imma hang up the cape and settle down' Bale was playing Batman.

This new take... My reaction can be summed up (on a couple of levels) about three minutes and five seconds into this video.

Also, that guy in the gif is seriously weirding me out. Get him. Get him.

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

I don't think people are too against the actor.

It's the bizarre look that they have gone for.

If they'd went for a more classic approach I think people would have lapped it up.

Will this film be connecting into the BatsvsSupes movies?

Outside of sad internet echo chambers it isn't actually arguable at all.

As far as I know it isn't connected to the upcoming BvS film. The last thing WB wants is continuity of any sort between films and the like.

Oh-ho! A guy on the internet makes fun of the internet, as if that makes his point. Very novel. Well close the whole thing down, folks. We're done.

Or, I could say that 'character' means a bit more than a name and makeup. Ol' Heath had both of those, or, well, one and a half of those, but how he acted seemed more like a laboured Danny DeVito impersonation to me, than anybody else. I could get Will Ferrell to dress up in blue and red and do his schtick, but would that make him a good Superman?

Obviously, we know how much of a disaster that has been for Disney/Marvel.

Would it be so much to ask to have a DarkDeco Batman film in the style of TAS? I think I heard something about them making more episodes but I'm not sure how that would turn out.

His act at the beginning of the movie, the nurse getup and the way he handled the mob bosses was a pretty good Joker rendition to me. So the big plan at the end was different; they tried to add their own thing onto an already well established show that he was the Joker early on. But, you know, don't let that stop you from bashing on him, V.

I wasn't aware the Joker was supposed to fit a particular scheme anyway: that kind of goes against who he is.

LOL. This is why people should leave casting to the experts. The only thing this guy looks like is what he is -- some dorky cosplayer. He doesn't look dangerous or even evil in the slightest. This guy wouldn't have been a match for "Batkid," let along the Dark Knight Detective. Ditch the Oscar winner and sign him up! HILARIOUS.

So regarding Leto, I'm not crazy about the forehead tattoo. Otherwise, I'm interested to see where it goes. This is a still shot of the actor, shirtless and in a silly exaggerated pose based on a famous cover. Let's see how he looks dressed, in motion, and in action. Let's see how the story and actor interpret the character. Let's see his chemistry with the other actors. It's really not about whether or not he's wearing a string tie and gak like that.

Wait - is that what you do?

Are you in Hollywood casting?

I guess that would explain...some things!

All kidding aside - I'm more than OK with seeing what Leto can do with the role!

To belabour the point (because, really, enough people don't know about them), check out the DC Animated Original Movies. They tend to be in a similar style (sometimes more anime-ish inspired). - The people behind BATS end up getting involved in them quite often too.

Under The Red Hood is probably the best of them.

Yeah I've watched them all a few months ago and recommend anybody who hasn't done so to... err... do so!

Went through them in a marathon.

I don't think the live action films have managed to get the tragic nature of some of the villains right.

Bit of a further tangent.
Spoiler:
What I never understood is how villains like "Red Claw" or "Calendar Girl" never made the transition to the comics AFAIK considering the demand for better female characters.

Surprisingly deep for a Saturday morning cartoon.

DC cartoons have done it right since the beginning. The movies are dark, the JL cartoon was full of naughty, adult humor over the heads of kids, and the batman cartoon was, is, and always will be at the top of the cartoon kingdom (I think it's better than the top contender, Pinky and the Brain, but that's just my thought).

DC Animated is usually on the ball, which makes some of the cinematic choices a bit stranger I suppose.

seems so obvious now !

... Casting wise I'm more than prepared to wait and see how it turns out. Considering how bleached out the Superman film was seems a bit odd that , skin wise at least, that here things are somewhat more naturalistic. ish.

Not really sure that Joker even really belongs in a suicide squad movie anyway.

One would suggest he's perhaps a bit too unstable/unpredictable to be a field operative, so one assumes we'll see him used differently -- much like in the animated film they did.

Which was cool.

There's been some talk about Amanda Waller having a "trophy cabinet" of various items, one of which some claim is the/a trident like the one Aquaman has been pictured with and IIRC a Batgadget or two ?

Given the picture of the tombstone revealed recently wonder if Joker is locked up in Arkham/Belle Reve/wherever for killing said hero ?
