I mostly enjoy the game, it takes the "army building" side of an RTS to whole new level when you actually assemble, paint, and physically move your units around a physical table. If I was honest though, a big part of why I'm still around because I will lose a lot of money on my investment if I sell all my stuff and ever want to get back into the game.
My problem with the game is actually a LACK of competitive players in my local are; I have Imperial knights that I never get to use cause they're too OP locally but will get crushed at a real tournament even if they aren't FAQ-nerfed to heck, so I never use them. Playing against Decurion Necrons at NOVA this year with my grey knights was literally the most fun I've had in a game all year.

No offense, but if you aren't seeing rule abuses or uber cheese, your meta probably isn't very competitive. Locally we are competitive, but had to ban formations and LoW in most armies since they just result in a stomping of armies that don't have good formations/ LoW.
Some of the formations are great, but the few broken ones are ruining what could have been a great idea.
We also had to change allies for similar reasons.
To be clear, very little isn't the same as none. Also its not really cheesy if both players are cranking the power dial to 11. In that respect, I guess it would be more fair to say next to no one brings Uber cheese to spring on an unprepared opponent in order to enjoy collecting the teeth after the curb stomp. Here it is literally as simple as saying "I don't want to play LoW/power formation" and MOST people won't even think twice about removing it.
The problem with blanket banning formations is that some armies basically don't function without them. I know that there was a while we had it so we just banned the bonuses. That way, for example, I could take an all bike army, but just none of the buffs.
As to the maelstrom point you made (multi quote is hard on my phone), I can agree with your point to an extent. The same problem occurred with kill points. Some squads were easier to kill than others. Why is a 5 man scout squad worth the same as a grav cent star. Some armies bring 10-15 kill points to a game while their opponent brings less than half. It's even worse with the growing scale where you can have entire armies at 1500 with only 3 or 4 kill points.
Yes some of the objectives aren't balanced against each other. But I enjoy it more than the other missions, and to me, it just feels more right than kill points or turn 5 turbo boost objective grab.

Because I can't get a game in for anything else. Literally the only other tabletop game played around here is x wing. If I could get people into infinity or malifeaux or heck even warmahordes I would drop it like a bad habit. People cry about "muh investmunts" about 10 seconds after the 20th GW complaint in any game played, but are too sissy to man up and try new stuff. And I have tried running demo games and starting league interest.
Really I just need to find a store farther away with more deversafied tastes.

And also to occasionally summon Blacksails by saying a better ruleset does not limit creativity. That's always fun.

But we're still here. Holding on for some reason. What is your reason?
Mine is that for me, the 40k universe is a source of great fun and imagination. TT battles of silly, fluffy proportions like "how many IG can my friend's psyker kill before he gets a bayonet to the face" and "stab the witch, STAB IT!!" bring up familiar storylines with my friends, watching as our favoured champions fight for glory.
I still play, but get in fewer games with fewer people than I used to. With lots of self-restrictions and an already large model base to choose from on my shelves, the game can still be fun, but it's getting harder and harder to keep that way and the games are getting fewer and fewer.

Even though 40k is expensive, the return in hours enjoyment is tremendous.
My BA army was all new, and shy of £300. And i can't wait to stick it on the table.
My Xb1 was £280 with Destiny, it pissed me off significantly. I can make 40k work, but i can't make the xb1 do what it should.
The other games afaik/ see don't offer the coolness that is 40k. I love that i can place down 100 small guys, and huge monsters, knowing i have even more variety available to me.
I've had many other interests that cost more than this.

My impression is that complaints have mounted over the past 11 years since I have been a member. There was always complaining about balance, then price complaints accelerated after the introductioin of the rapid price increase policy in about 2008. Things got worse when 6th edition was introduced, both about price and rules, and got worse again when 7th edition replaced 6th edition.
I won't mention the FineCast debacle, as GW themselves have tried to quietly erase it from history.
To be sure, there also has been a lot of praise for models like the Knight Titan, and naturally there are planty of people who do like Strength D weapons and the like. So it hasn't all been bad.

I actually enjoy playing the game with friends and players focused on playing fun lists. The established fluff is great but the new stuff not so much and the models are cool looking (gotta have decent rules to justify buying the cool model). The reason I personally gripe about things is because of the potential that 40K could be if GW was a company that focuses on making good rules and good narrative instead of just "make the best fantasy miniatures in the world and sell them globally at a profit". If the company had some leadership that gave a squig about the game, the quality of the rules it made, and the community then 40K could be something truly amazing.

I'm new to the game. So I'm still in it because:
1) I love the fluff and setting. It's varied and massive. There are few universes that can match it.
Star Wars/LOTR are the two big contenders, but I don't like Star Wars that much and LOTR is also owned by GW, and I have no interest in the tabletop factions.
2) 40K is pre-established, its already existing and not just starting off with me requiring an investment, hoping that the game will pick up steam. I KNOW that people will play it to some degree, no matter where I go. It's just a matter of finding them.
3) I'm expanding. Not my waistline, I mean my armies.
I'm doing this partially cause I haven't paid my dues yet. I haven't put in the time and effort of the old fogeys in this game, and I haven't earned the right to be salty yet. That's why I have plans to get into Militarum Tempestus.

Forgeworld keeps me at GW's table. My tastes are broadening all the time; Dropzone and now Dropfleet Commander, X-Wing, Darklands, Sedition Wars (really!), War at Sea, Kingdom Death, I all play and now Gates of Antares calls to me. But, the chaps at Forgeworld, both their Imperial Armour series and the Horus Heresy series, actually do put out a quality, albeit expensive, product. To me they subjectively produce a more grown up product in the 40k universe and I don't feel like I'm being sold toys that just need batteries to work. If they went then my interest in the GW stable would probably vanish. Don't get me wrong, I'll still be playing Epic and BFG (and I pity you poor souls who've never had a chance at such fine games), as well as with my collection I've built up, but there wouldn't be anything left to keep me buying.

I am still here because I have already made a huge investment into the game, but I rarely get the opportunity to play. Given the choice between the two, I would sooner play a game or two of Infinity than a game of 40K, though where I currently live I seem to struggle to find a game of *anything*.
I am waiting for the day when someone competent buys out Games Workshop. They have a good IP they are driving into the ground: it seems inevitable to me. It should be easy for someone like FFG to take what is already the best-known IP in the hobby, design some good rules around it, then turn a profit.

Despite my ranting about price hikes I genuinely think 7th ed is great fun and although certain factions are definitely more competitive, as a fun game I think it's great. I've moved from finishing a tournament necrons list to just getting guard models I like and focusing on painting and fun narrative games, and by using a lot of "counts as"-ing it's working out to be quite fun.

I really don't care for the game itself, or the company, but I like the fluff and the models. I like painting because I am not really an artistic person, and the models always gave me a nice way to express myself a bit.
I never had a FLGS in my area, and the two or three people I played with were pretty much idiots and ruined the game for me. I was the only person who put energy into the visual aspect of it, so I figured that I should capitalize on that side of the hobby.
