Subject: Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
Seems like a bad YA novel that is trying to rip off guardians of the galaxy.
When you see the "City" it almost sounds like "I got a feeling" is gonna play

"Unimaginably ancient xenos artefact somewhere on the planet, hive fleet poised above our heads, hidden 'stealer broods making an early start....and now a bloody Chaos cult crawling out of the woodwork just in case we were bored. Welcome to my world, Ciaphas."

"I will admit that some Primachs like Russ or Horus could have a chance against an unarmed 12 year old novice but, a full Battle Sister??!! One to one? In close combat? Perhaps three Primarchs fighting together... but just one Primarch?" da001
The protagonists certainly look a lot younger than they used to in the comics.
As for the "Guardians of the Galaxy" knock-off remark, this series has been around since 1967(!), predating the original Guardians by two years, who made their debut in 1969.

To be fair, the "GotG knock-off remark" refers not to the comic, but the look and feel of the movie, or more precisely, how the trailer is scored and shot. I think that Valerian's trailer definitely apes GotG, for the same reason that Suicide Squad did - because GotG was a resounding success.
Not sure how to feel about this one. The CGI for what it's worth will probably be good. But the story and characters/acting will make it or break it. The new Ghost in the Shell is a visual feast as well, but from what i'm hearing it is all flash and no substance.

Valerian's CGI looks to play to the strength of CGI - smooth shapes, hard shapes, space scenes. No CGI animals, which are still difficult (expensive) to render well.
It's a little ironic that GitS is going to be an FX movie rather than elevating up to a philosophical one a la the Matrix, given its roots.
I'm a big fan of Valerian and Laureline mainly because that it served as inspiration for many sci-fi designs including Star Wars. My family tends to like the cheesy, nostalgic anime they did called Time Jam, Valerian and Laureline.
The actual movie from what I understand is based around volume six of the comics Ambassador of the Shadows, which is the first version that was officially translated to English of the Valerian series.

Saw this the other day. I had low expectations since the reviews were so bad, but I really liked Luc Besson's previous work so I felt it was worth a try.
I got what I expected - the story was a hot mess, but the action was OK. The lead guy was really good in Chronicle and pretty not great here - he doesn't have the gravitas or presence to really carry a movie. Even in Chronicle, Michael B Jordan outshone him pretty hard.
Cara Eyebrows lady did OK, certainly better than the forgettable baggy eyes guy.
I liked the weird aliens and the effects.
I'd give it a solid 5/10, but for the effects, feel pretty good about seeing it on the big screen.

I'll catch it on cable/netflix. Not expecting much, but it looks like the kinda thing you wanna see on a nice 4K tv.. of which I have recently acquired!

If it's a film that jumps up a rating point or two on a big cinema screen with Dolby I'll go and watch it in, as really enjoyed the Fifth Element in the cinema.

I saw it and absolutely loved it! Yeah, the acting wasn't the greatest and it DEFINITELY wasn't as good as The Fifth Element, but there were some great action sequences and amazing special effects (plus a very sexy lead actress...). I would definitely recommend seeing it on the big screen and in 3D if possible.

I thought Rihanna was just a support character to the guy from Chronicle and that guy with the blonde hair and dark eyebrows. What was his name? Carl Delivine or something like that?
Reviews I have seen and people I have talked to that saw it all said it was basically 100% style and 0% substance. If one just wants to see pretty things it is the movie to see but if you want something to go with dazzling CGI then it is probably not the one to see. I'll wait till home video and mainly because I've liked Luc Besson's other directed films.

If we're going by his movies, Leon, Nikita and the Fifth Element are all great. Even the Messenger is a lot of fun to watch, although Lucy falls flat. I'm waiting for Blu-Ray before I watch Valerian.
Movie was far better than Spider-Man Homecoming. My wife and I both enjoyed it. It was a fun popcorn flick and felt like a cross between Avatar and Star Wars.
Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Oh man, complete opposite here.
My wife and I saw Valerian on opening weekend in 3D and were pissed when we left. Total waste of 3D ticket prices in our opinions. Saw Spiderman the next weekend and we had a blast.
In fairness to Valerian, I did like the nods to 5th Element, especially the golden armored aliens, and the film was pretty but that was it. The main characters' chemistry was non-existent, the were so many plot holes that I just checked out around the time they left the market place, and the cameos didn't do anything for me. It is too bad because there seems to be a lot of potential in the world built up around the movie, but feth me, the main characters were such a bore to watch.

If you're going to see it, see it on a big screen.
I thought it was OK; I wasn't happy with how they structured the story and the guy playing Valerian needed a good slap, but it was visually appealing and I liked the world they created.
The progression of the Pearls' society was rather interesting - there's a whole plot there, apart from anything else.
