I imagine if Mayweather had a car wreck and was put into a coma before a fight this could happen. Otherwise Mcgregor is just a below average sparring partner for him.

He'd still lose. One of the great boxers vs. yea no.

Are you contending that Mayweather would win in an MMA fight vs MacGregor?!
a motivated mayweatger you betcha.

I strongly disagree. In an octogon with MMA rules, it's game over for Mayweather.

But it's never happening. We may as well argue the merits of King Kong vs T-Rex.

Admittedly this is dated but my closest anecdote is non Thaiboxer kickboxers vs. boxers. As a rule if the boxer was of equal level, the boxer would murderize the kickboxer. In this instance its far far disparate. As noted we have one of the bext counterpunchers in the hisory of professional boxing, vs. a good MMA guy. To be comparable you would have to have a a just good level boxer.

A former sparring partner of Conor McGregor weighs in.

Granted, the event in question seemed to be a one time deal and it was a year ago, but it is pretty telling. And something most of us already know.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/more-sports/mcgregor-sparring-partner-ufc-star-has-no-shot-vs-mayweather/ar-BBCLPJ4?ocid=UE07DHP

Conor McGregor is being backed by a lot of the early Las Vegas action for his bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr, but one of the UFC star’s former sparring partners says he has no shot at winning the fight.“It’s crazy, I read all these posts where people say Mayweather’s gonna have his hands full landing on Conor because of Conor’s skill and footwork and movement,” van Heerden said. “I’m no Mayweather and — out of camp, out of shape — I landed (punches) on Conor McGregor at will.

Former IBO welterweight champion Chris van Heerden, who sparred with McGregor in May 2016, told TMZ he was out of shape when he worked out with McGregor and was still able to dominate the Irishman.

“It’s crazy to think people can actually compare a fighter that’s 0-0 in a boxing ring compared to a legend that’s 49-0 and has beaten the best and best in the world.”

Van Heerden sparred with McGregor over a year ago, so there’s a chance the MMA fighter has improved significantly since then. That said, Mayweather is known as one of the smartest fighters and best defenders of all time. And even if McGregor does catch him with a big shot or two, van Heerden doesn’t think Conor will have enough power to knock Floyd out.

“No. He’s been hit by guys that can punch, and he didn’t go down,” van Heerden said. “He knows how to recover.”

McGregor probably thinks he can win, but the amount of money he is expected to make will take the sting away even if the expected outcome is the one we see. Should McGregor find a way to beat Mayweather, it would be arguably the biggest upset in the history of the sport.

The way I have heard stories told about that fight there was a bit more to it than that.

I watched it. There wasn't.

I have watched it as well. I am not talking about the actual fight. I am talking about the negotiations before the fight and the behaviour of certain parties.

The negotiations concerning the nature of the fight (worked vs. real) and what was allowed in the fight (kicks, grappling and so on) continued until almost the last second.
All negotiations were about limiting what techniques Inoki was allowed to use.

In addition there were persistent rumours (just rumours, mind) that threats were made to Inoki by the organisation Black Muslims if he laid a hand on their champion.

I am not addressing the veracity of those claims.

All I am pointing out is that describing the fight as; "Ali popped him once and after that the judo guy would flop on the ground and try to kick him like a toddler" is perhaps not the whole story.

Here is an alternate description;

"The fight
As soon as the opening bell rang, Inoki ran the 16-foot gap and slid at the legs of Ali, who sidestepped the attack. Inoki stayed on the ground for all but the first 14 seconds of the three-minute first round, kicking at Ali and landing one clean hit to Ali's right leg. The majority of the fight saw Inoki on his back kicking Ali's legs, occasionally connecting. By the third round, a wound had appeared on Ali's left knee.

Ali began walking around the ring, out of reach of Inoki's kicks, taunting him by shouting "Coward Inoki! Inoki no fight!". In the fourth round, Inoki, still on his back, trapped Ali in a corner and started kicking wildly at his thighs. Ali leapt up on to the ropes and tucked his legs underneath him. In round six, Ali tried to grab Inoki's left ankle as he kicked him, but Inoki wrapped his right leg around Ali's right calf and flipped him over on the canvas. He then rolled over on top of Ali's chest. While in this hold, Inoki elbowed Ali in the face, costing him three points.[4]

Ali did not throw his first punch until the seventh round. In the eighth, Ali's trainer, Angelo Dundee, demanded that Inoki tape the tips of his shoelaces, claiming that one of the eyelets came loose and was cutting Ali's legs. A wound had already opened up on his thigh. In the tenth, Ali threw his second punch, and two more in the thirteenth. He threw only six punches in total during the fight.[5]

The fight went the fifteen round distance and was scored as a draw. Inoki had been three points up but was docked all three for fouls. The result meant no one had to lose face; Inoki could claim he would have won had it not been for the penalties, whereas Ali could defend himself by saying his opponent had cheated.[4]

Necro'd because the fight is this weekend.

Anyone else still following this?

I'm actually very intrigued by this fight now. Might split the PPV with some friends.

Feeling crazy, but I got Mcgregor via KO.

Well he's got years on Mayweather.

I don't really think he has much of a chance, unless he has gathered a load of ring rust since he retired, if McGregor can tire him out with his youth, maybe he can whittle him down?

It's probably the only chance he's got, he has to knock him down before Mayweather knocks him out, he won't win on points. Not in Las Vegas.

McGregor weather out Mayweather? McGregor likes to go a short fight where as Mayweather has gone the distance several times over.

But still I will only pick Mayweather because this is a boxing match. And yes McGregor kbows how to box but hes a trained MMA fighter where as Mayweather is a trained boxer, if this were an MMA fight then Id bet McGregor all day

First pro fight VS 49 previous.
Its easily mayweather advantage, he has far more experience in this fight, and sport.

I wouldn't put much stock in that. Thats all coming from Mayweather and just feels like gamesmanship. Its a mental thing. MMA fighters are generally very good at weight cutting and Connor has no history of missing weight as far as I know.

Same with the "revelation" that Malignaggi, a former multi-belt holding champion was sent by Mayweather to spy on Mcgregor. If that were true, Malignaggi wouldn't have cried so much about getting his bell rung, then knocked down by Mcgregor in a taped sparring match.

Its all mental games.

Possibly, though he's always been fightin in a sport with significantly less strigency in terms of regulation. Dana White in particular isn't exactly unknown to bend rules a bit for his big money fighters.

People should really think hard about how much sense this fight makes.

And they should *really, really* think hard about what the flow of this fight is going to be like before plunking down money to watch it.

I am stunned by the number of people giving McGregor a chance to win, and I don't even follow boxing or MMA. In no other case would anyone say "well, sure that guy is a master at his job and a champion for years, but this other guy might take him because...scrappy!"

This fight is a super joke.

Lots of people hate Mayweather for either his style, personality, or both, so that's an important factor here.

If it was another, ordinary boxer, maybe you give McGregor a slim puncher's chance. Maybe he swings wildly and connects with one big punch. But Mayweather is defined by his supercautious approach that simply doesn't give you opportunities. I just don't see how it can be a close fight or an interesting one.

All boxing events are matches but not all are fights. Mayweather isn't a fighter; he's a boxer and an excellent one even if 'retired.'

Asking McGregor to win a boxing match against one of the all time best is like making a terrific cricket player hit against American baseball pitchers or forcing a baseball player to bat at cricket; they might do well enough but won't measure up to one skilled in the other's sport. Unless this match becomes an actual fight, McGregor has absolutely no chance of winning.

My guess is it will go the distance, McGregor will have a couple moments where it looks like he has a chance to do something but after the initial excitement wears off it will a be relatively dull affair. Then both will want a rematch so they can fleece more suckers again.

This is exactly how I see it going down too. I never thought McGregor was a worse fighter, because lets be honest here, the guy is an incredible fighter, but this is a boxing match not a fight.

It was fun to speculate and hope! And going ten rounds with arguably the best ever is no small task. Now Mcgregor can get back to MMA and defend his belt. There's a murderers row of fighters waiting for him.

MMAFighting.com's liveblog:

Mayweather dressed like a bank robber on the walkout to the fight is pretty ironic

Round 1: It’s happening. It’s actually happening. From utter pipe dream to unbelievable reality, Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor is about to play out. For better or worse, whatever we see over the next 35 minutes is going to be remembered forever. Imelda May sings the Irish national anthem. Demi Lovato follows with the Star Spangled Banner. And here comes Conor, walking out to “Foggy Dew” with his two UFC belts. This is surreal. This is all so surreal. Here comes Floyd, wearing a full-on bank-robber ski mask. McGregor’s corner is dressed in three-piece suits. Jimmy Lenon does the honors and we’re ready. This is happening. They touch ‘em up and we’re off. McGregor comes out in a wide stance. He pressures Mayweather against the ropes and starts letting his hands go. Mayweather slips and dodges. Left straight down the pipe from McGregor misses. Mayweather jabs to the body. McGregor pops out his right hand. Mayweather misses and McGregor looks at him with disdain. McGregor jabs to the body. McGregor lunges inside and flurries, but misses. Mayweather charges inside and eats a nice uppercut. McGregor playing with his hands a lot. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 McGregor.

Round 2: Good start for McGregor. Felt like Mayweather was holding back early. McGregor walks Mayweather into the ropes. Nothing going. McGregor misses with a looping shot. McGregor jabs to the body. Nice right hand for McGregor as he switches stances. McGregor just misses with a right hand down the pipe. McGregor slips a right hand and they clinch. Mayweather connects with a jab. McGregor clinches and throws some rabbit punches. Awkward but effective. And again. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 McGregor. (20-18 McGregor.)

Round 3: McGregor has clearly won the first two rounds, which is something I don’t think many people expected. McGregor gets warned for throwing a hammer fist. They clinch again then break. McGregor feinting as the arena erupts in “Ole!” chants. McGregor switches stances and misses with a left. McGregor pops out his jab. Very little offense here for Mayweather. Mayweather jabs to the body. They trade. McGregor switches stances and pops out a straight punch. Every time they clinch McGregor is unleashing with rabbit punches. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 McGregor (30-27 McGregor.)

Round 4: McGregor might be getting close to a point deduction for those hammer fists. McGregor walks Mayweather against the ropes and starts throwing. Mayweather keeps diving inside leaning low. Mayweather eats a very nice left. Mayweather answers back, he’s landing now. Mayweather eats a jab. McGregor goes to the head as Mayweather goes to the body. Mayweather smiles. McGregor staying busy, mixing up his punches. McGregor circles out and just misses a left hand. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Mayweather. (39-37 McGregor.)

Round 5: Mayweather looks like he has a pep in his step now. McGregor is staying busy but can’t land flush. Referee Robert Byrd is getting frustrated with the action in the clinch. McGregor tags Mayweather with a pair of left hands. McGregor smacks Mayweather clean off a break. Mayweather responds with a sharp salvo. McGregor eats a left. McGregor is popping right hands through Mayweather’s guard. This is a much closer round. Mayweather shoves McGregor after the round. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 McGregor. (49-46 McGregor.)

Round 6: They start fighting inside and Mayweather turns his back completely to McGregor, as McGregor punches his head and body. Strange sequence there. Mayweather is starting to come alive now. McGregor looks tired. Mayweather is landing clean and often with jabs and combinations. McGregor goes to the body, then tags Mayweather with a sharp straight right. McGregor grins. Mayweather rushes into the clinch and Byrd warns McGregor about the back of the head shots. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Mayweather. (58-56 McGregor.)

Round 7: They immediately clinch, Mayweather punches to the body. McGregor is staying active though, throwing at Mayweather from unusual angles. Mayweather stalks forward and connects with a pair of stiff punches. McGregor answers with an uppercut. Mayweather charges forward and connects. McGregor lands a nice shot in the clinch. Mayweather pops McGregor’s head back with a hard shot. Mayweather is really seizing the momentum. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Mayweather. (67-66 McGregor.)

Round 8: They clinch and Mayweather turns his back, leading McGregor to get warned again for punches to the back of the head. McGregor switches stances and lands. Mayweather fires back but McGregor connects on a clean counter. McGregor is staying busier this round. McGregor eats a hard shot, clinches, then responds with a nice shot off the break. McGregor is throwing and landing. McGregor eats a stiff jab. Mayweather does the same. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 McGregor. (77-75 McGregor.)

Round 9: McGregor swarms in immediately and piles on punches against the ropes. Byrd talks to him about something, hard to tell what, and McGregor sneaks in a quick jab at Mayweather. McGregor unloads with blocked punches while Mayweather covers up. They clinch, and McGregor lands a nice jab off the break. Mayweather is unloading now. Oh man, Mayweather has McGregor hurt. Mayweather tags McGregor hard against the ropes. McGregor is fading hard. Mayweather lunges forward and connects with a left hand. McGregor looks nearly done. Twenty seconds left and Mayweather is tagging McGregor at will. McGregor is still standing. He makes it. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 Mayweather. (86-85 McGregor.)

Round 10: McGregor holds Mayweather’s head with his left hand and paws out a few rights. McGregor continues to look to tie up. Mayweather catches McGregor hard! Mayweather swarms! McGregor is eating shot after shot! That’s it. Byrd steps in. McGregor was getting tagged against the ropes. This is done. Floyd Mayweather has defeated Conor McGregor
