Patented McBogus recipe!

Typhus corrosion -> a very watery sloshing of Mournfang Brown - you wanna mix this with water until it feels like a dilute wash, but use water instead of medium to encourage the finish to be rough and chalky when it dries -> next, a healthy orange drybrush, and then, my new favorite paint ever, Mr. Weathering Color: Rust Orange. Give that last one a few days to dry, it's like a weathing powder pre-mixed into solution, and it works Beautifully.

Should give you some nice rusty whatever-you-wants.

Nice. Are you planning to tidy up the base rims or leave them like that?

Lol, I wondered if I'd get caught out on that.

Yeah, gonna tidy them up a bit - I noticed when the weathering powder dried that the yellow on the Genestealers' bases doesn't match the much dirtier yellow on the Patriarch, or the cultists, so I'm planning to re-visit them in a bit. I've got a few more nids that need building + priming when spray painting weather comes back, and a couple of cults characters, too, so I'll probably get around to that when I do them. For the time being, just glad to have chunked through the backlog a bit more haha

I love the painting! The cultists look really cool - nice work on the flesh tones for their bulbous heads. The patriarch is a really fun build, nice!

Have you got anywhere on the 80s Alien? Regarding the transparent section, it might be worth looking at how model plane hobbyists do their canopies to avoid fogging? I've seen some people use PVA in some cases even.

And yes, base rims are always something to watch out for - you can't get away with presenting nicely painted models with dodgy rim work

Cheers very much! Plenty more coming!

...Anyone know what works well with aberrants?

Fantastic work! You absolutely smashed it with the cultists and the progression into the dark and shadowy purestrains is perfect. You've got a great eye for a colour scheme and a nifty turn of phrase with the fluff too. Really enjoying the background vibe.

Cheers very much, Crowe! I've got a few aberrants to work on next, so I think that colour transitioning is reeally gonna be pushed to its limits
Looking forward to it, though, they're some lovely models!

Thanks for the kind words about the fluff, too! I love your Smirking series to peices, so it's given me a little gretchin-y grin to hear that! Whenever I'm painting, I find myself wondering what the backstory of each of the minis in my hands is, how they came to be where they are, why they have the little bits of gear and trinkets. In some ways, GSC are kind of boring, story-wise - cultists worship tyranids, tyranids show up, eat cultists.
If I remember right, I was at the end of a breakup when I bought these guys, and listening to a lot of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, especially their album Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven.
It's a really weird album, tonally. In many ways, it feels quite bleak and sci-fi, almost Blade Runner, despite being wholly instrumental. But at the same time, there are these sweeping, euphoric symphonies that to me always feel kind of rapturous. I liked the idea of the cultists being trapped in a miserable, past-its-prime industrial wasteland, but somehow this landscape being tied to their fanatical conviction that salvation was coming. I also wanted to try and marry Soviet politico ranks with capitalist corporate heirarchy, with a sprinkle of 18th century industrialism for good measure, to give the cult a bit more texture than on wednesdays we wear robes and sacrifice people, on thursdays we tell adventurers that are new to town tiny tidbits about ourselves in the local tavern, to trick them into trying to uncover our secret lair, so we can kill them, and on Sundays we have a tombola.

Anyway, it's time for bed here, haha.
Again, thanks for your kind words, and thanks to everyone who'd popped their head in here to have a look and say hi! Really appreciate it!

I thought your fanatical rant was entirely believable. it certainly wouldn't be the first time someone used the religious fervour of a downtrodden people to further their own neferrious ends. It was very smoothly written I though with a hefty dose of in-universe sounding techno babble that I somehow seemed to glide right through. So props for that. And the framing with the mechanical issues in the playback was a very neat device.

I have no idea what an aberrant is. I sold off most of my Nids when 6th ed (was it 6th?) ruined all my genetic DIY gribblery. So I have literally no expectations to disappoint.

Haha, the Aberrants are courtesy of my main boy Trephines - along with about 20 genestealers (I want to stress that this is because of my birthday and xmas, not because he's some kind of plastic sugar daddy
Spoiler:
PM for applications, always open

and a very very kind soul), but the Tervigon is a deliberate addition after I managed to score with the Incubi Darkness (shoutout to Kobe City - you guys might just be extra Osaka, but there will always be a space for your beefy goodness in my heart and arteries) at the start of spring break here.

Then the rest of the bag is gubbins, sweet sweet gubbins. I just watched the theatre release of Evangelion 3.0+1.0, and have all sorts of odd geiger-esque body horror ideas rattling around in my brain. Might try popping my resin-casting cherry, too, if I can find something suitably orange-red to do it with.
