I.. don't eat tootsie rolls expecting them to taste like chocolate? After a few chews its more a weird gooey mix that's mostly pure sugar, with slight overtones of caramel, cola and maybe the barest hint of chocolate.
I don't expect Skittles to taste like actual fruit, either, but I like those too.

Hi-Chew? Those are pretty great.
They're not exactly the same - but Hi-Chews are very similar to 'standard' Maoam blocks, mind. So yeah, if you like Hi-Chews, you'd like Maoam too.

No one has mentioned halloween peeps?
Peeps are the worst thing ever intended to go into a human mouth.
As for good stuff, I like kitkat bars, even the rare orange ones.

Toffee (or Candy) apples are usually pretty awful,
take an almost too old to eat apple, long since gone wooly, dip in molten sugar with some red or orange dye in then stick in a twist if cellophane on a shop counter without any refrigeration to sweat for a few months,
(I like fresh, home made toffee apples, but store bought ones are almost always an abomination)

Candy Coffins, from when I was a mere snivelling lirrul Grot.
And yes, Candy, despite being very very British. Because that is what they were called.
Little plastic coffins, with a hinged lid and claps on the opposite side.
Open it up, and tip the contents out (gently). The sweeties formed a jigsaw Skellington, and if you were lucky, you could form an entire Skellington from the contents.
Man I crave those!

Candy Pumpkin are the best, followed by Reeses pumpkins.
The worst has to be any candy the is dusty or dry, like pixie sticks or Tums that masquerade as candy, Smarties

Perhaps I’ve been approaching them from the wrong direction. You’re suggesting they taste better if I’m mentally psyched for Sugar Daddys or something?

To be fair, both are very divisive candies.
I enjoy black licorice, but candy corn is just over-sweetened wax.
Opinions, obviously, vary.

Worst: Candy Corn by far. Next up would be licorice/twizzlers, taffy, and lolypops. Basically anything you'd find as product placement on an Our Gang/Little Rascals short.
Best: Snickers, Payday, Almond Joy, M&M (most any kind). In the non-choconut category, I'd personally rank Nerds highest up on my list.

This one's to really jerk all the candy corn haters' chains at once: the store I work at is selling all their Halloween candy at half price now that the holiday's over, so I just bought myself 5 POUNDS of candy corn really cheap. It should last a while if I can discipline myself.

Grab some Red Vines, get your mind right. Bonus points if you can nab the giant bag of mixed licorice types. You get your cream soda tasting ones alongside the good old fashioned Jaegermeister candy we all know and love.
