Subject: Mad Doc Defends - Alien Vs Predator Requiem
Watched it again tonight. Wasn’t as bad as I remembered it, but still firmly a b-grade movie.
It was a little interesting how they didn’t pull any punches. Little kid in the forest? They never kill the cute kiddos! <facehugger> Pregnant women? Cue squick factor.
I preferred the first AvP more, but I’m not a huge fan of the horror genre, which this was more of.

I would say thats Prometheus myself.

I dunno, Covenant also has a whole lot of irritating dumbness going on. I mean it doesn’t have abdominal surgery to sprinting in 5 minutes, but it has a lot of its own dumbness.

People like to talk about the running to the side. But f that.
How about the geologist who made a digital map of the place with drones that he could access from his wrist is the guy who wanted to leave and got lost. Yes. The guy with the perfectly rendered 3d map is the guy who got lost.

The only reason it makes any sense that any person that was on that ship was chosen is that Weyland was such a megalomaniac that he had such divine faith in himself for his ultimate goal that nobody, no mater their incompetence, could stand in his way.

One of the most interesting things about Prometheus is the original pitch script. It has many of the same plot points and elements, but the context is different enough that, at least from reading the script, the overall picture is way less 'wtf is this gak.'
[rul=https://screenrant.com/alien-covenant-prometheus-original-script-engineers-explained-differences/]There are a few different summaries of the differences[/url].
You can kind of see how rampant executive meddling and Scott's obsession with sweeping environmental shots over the plot could produce Prometheus. I imagine the story is similar with Covenant, where you can see the rewrites that happened. Predators too.
I do like the Pitch Meetings, but it’s unfortunately a minority of what their channel puts out, instead spamming you with 25 things you missed in that movie.

I think Covenant definitely showed how tired the franchise has become. They learnt nothing from Aliens by killing a fairly popular character from Prometheus off-screen, and again there was massive stupidity displayed by the characters.
It had a few redeeming features; Michael Fassbender's David (who was the real 'monster' in the film), the cool little white alien was pretty nasty - actually eclipsing the big baddie at the end I thought - and I was taken by surprise by Danny McBride not immediately dying.
But, overall it left me not really worrying if I see an end to the trilogy or not, and that's from someone that is a massive Alien/Aliens fan.

As someone who constantly manages to get lost, despite tons of modern gps tech at my disposal, I do sympathise! I'm guessing I would probably make more of an effort to find my way if I happened to be exploring an alien ship, however.

Fair enough, but it is his actual job to map stuff, and he is entrusted with using the equipment for doing that job. That should equate to a higher level of competence with reading maps and navigating through complex 3d environments.
Even if it is feasible in reality for a professional cartographer to get flustered and lose their way, in the context of the film it just seems ridiculous and the viewers come away with the message "mapping guy just got lost... what?".

Maybe I'm missing part of the argument, but I'm not sure how pretty vistas in between scenes relevant to character and story development are a problem. The eye candy scenes are independent of the scenes in which the characters make eccentric, nonsensical and/or dumb decisions. It would be one thing if the movie was short and could have put that time to better use, but it's not, so I don't see the harm in the pretty environmental shots. They managed to make the rest of the movie dumb without any help.

Does anyone actually think that the leader of the vegan hippie idiot squad who gets everyone killed through supreme dumbassery would have been nice to see in another movie? Serious question.
In a different kind of movie and if the character was played by Leslie Nielsen I wouldn't say anything, but with how the characters in Prometheus are supposed to be dead serious, that's one questionable role model right there.

The installation is, to my knowledge, concentric corridors on different levels with a basement of domed rooms. Map guy got lost in the corridors before they even entered the first room. I think they may have wanted it to play as the stoned scientist guy getting lost because he's stoned, but he kind of got lost in a corridor without intersections while his completely sober colleague was also present, so...

It's not even a ship! It's one of a couple big pyramid like structures.
And yes, structure itself is one big spiral corridor that accesses different levels with the tunnel network below ground with rooms. There is even a shot of the 3d structure on the ships bridge with gps markers for all the crew individually. Not only did the guy have the perfect map. He also knew exactly where he was on the map.
