There is a healthy dose of self deception that I’ll get minis to the table, but the potential is always there.

And sometimes it actually happens.

That rings true.
I play a variety of miniature-agnostic games twice a month (so I could put virtually any sci Fi or fantasy mini into play) yet I still look back at alot of unpainted purchases and know :

"I was fooling myself if I thought that would make it to the table."

I used to be pretty bad about buying minis I just liked, as I have gotten older I have been trying to think of what I will use them for (the game they came from or another game), and if I will honestly ever get around to it.

I am mostly at the point of only buying official or another company's minis just for games I am getting into with at least one other person.

Conversely, I've opted to stop buying models for games that require specific models.
Unless I can potentially use it for more than one game/ruleset, I don't buy model.

By extension, I've stopped playing the relevant games.
Which isn't much of a loss as there are more good model agnostic (or at least 3rd party tolerant) games than I have time for and I like the resulting rules and community mindset more too.

I totally understand that, part of the reason I jumped into Bolt Action and Old World recently is the amount of other games I can use the links for, and the other than official models I can use in both games.

Besides Battletech and Blood Bowl, I don't play much that requires official models anymore. And well, between the 3d printing and third party options for both... I really don't need to buy official minis unless I feel like it for both games.

I now work very hard not to dip into getting models for games I know I will never get to play. It has helped to get me through eliminating my pile of shame.

I find it interesting how many of you find the model hobby must serve the game hobby. I’m the complete opposite in that I only sometimes care about the games as anything more than a beard for my model hobby.
