I remember sitting around in the local game store right about 20 years ago bitching about GW's announcement that they were switching from lead to pewter and using this as a justification for raising their prices.

The move from lead to pewter was spurred by a proposed bill in the US Senate banning lead in gaming miniatures. It was banned in other products, but gaming miniatures were singled out. I'm pretty sure the bill didn't pass after all and as most things the US Government does it was based on theoretical panic as no child had EVER gotten lead poisoning from lead miniatures even though lead minis have been around for at least 150 years. Other manufacturers (FASA, RAFM, Ral Partha,) followed suit, some didn't. Alas none of the other miniature companies prices increased substantially. By the way, at the time Citadel/Marauder minis were crap. If you played D&D it was Ral Partha all the way. They had much more talented sculptors at the time.

The benefit with lead was it was very easy to work with. Needed to chop off a weapon? Swap heads? No sweat. You could do it with a dull Exacto knife if needed. Often you could re-pose an arm or a leg by gently bending it with your fingers. I shudder to think of how good miniatures would be with today's sculpts if made of lead.

On to a new era. Not only is lead gone, metal is gone altogether. Let's think for a moment. FW prices are gawd-aweful. I hate their business model which doesn't allow my local store to carry their stuff (it's called 'price control'...) and the reason we're given for their extortionist prices is 'craftsmanship'. It's like they don't want a higher volume sold because they're conceited about their product.

Honestly, I don't see the figs getting cheaper if they move to resin. It'll be just another excuse to raise the price. Just like the last upteen excuses over the last 25 years I've been filling their parking lot full of Jaguars....

Funnily enough, Forgeworld prices were slowly on the way to becoming equal cost / cheaper alternatives to GW models, in some places (Commissars, Plague Ogryns, and the Exorcist Tank all come to mind immediately). Seems even craftsmanship only goes so far with price rising...

It's cogent, coherent comments like that which make the forums the repository of intellectual thought for which they are so well known. Even Bletchley Park couldn't decipher the meaning of that one. Also note, the plural of "army" is "armies".

Good thing none of those models are ones that anyone wants. I mean who would want any of the GK models like Draigo, the Vindicare Assassin, or Death Cult Assassins. Also who would want Tomb King or Liche Priest or Casket of Souls. It's not like they have a new army book coming out soon.

That's sort of crazy that all that stuff isn't for sale, especially for the amries that just got new codices! This is seriously going to screw with me choosing my first army.

These models have not gone out of production, metal models are just going direct only from now on.

The models will still be available, it's just that you will have to order them in store and either pick them up or have them posted.

It is possible however that if they go strictly Direct Only that independents may have to pay more to stock them, which means they will no longer be able to sell them at a discount.

Because the production of metal models will no longer apparently be in Lenton.

All of the moulds have been shipped oversees and the models will be produced there, which will reduce production costs.

This is why production has been stopped in batches, not all of the moulds were shipped at once.

This is what happened to Forge World, all of the moulds were shipped to China, and FW models are produced there now as it is much cheaper. GW paints are also produced overseas now, although I don't believe paints were ever produced in house but always by a third party, but I believe they used to be produced in the UK.

Actually the opposite is true, the overseas facility in Shanghai, which did run the paint production line, was closed towards the end of last year. The equipment was shipped to Lenton for it be managed there.

Most likely they are not available because they sold out due to demand. See below.

I ordered the GK Inquisitor a few weeks back, and I didn't get a email like the one posted above, so after a week or so of not receiving a shipping notice I called to check on the order. The answer I got was what I expected - they didn't have them in stock due to high demand. Since GW has multiple shipping centers, they were having to get more sent over from another center to the Tennessee center. So basically, to answer your question, they have multiple warehouses and some I guess can run out of inventory during periods of high demand. This is the case in the US at least.

Could someone clarify for me if I should rush and try to buy any of these, or wait for them to be "re-released" if that's the plan? I need 2 DE Clawed Fiends, and as they were just released, I didn't think there was any rush, but they're on the list.

Steve, I really suggest if you need those models, that you grab them now. There are a lot of significant shortages from GW right now, and unavailable from Direct as well as Trade Sales. Little bits of orders are coming back in stock as they ship over from the UK. But this is a hell of a lot more than just metal going to direct.

Don't wait on that. That was one poster here in this thread who thought that was happening because some Necromunda models were part of the "discontinued" list.

Well, the people I speak to each week keep attatching this comment to emails:

WHILE SUPPLIES LAST METAL: I spoke with most of you in the last few weeks about the repackaging and format change to all of our main range metal models including both boxes and blisters. Please do not restock any of the metal items further notice. If any of your customers comes in with a special order for any metal items, then we will try to fulfill that order while supplies last. If you have any questions about this please feel free to contact me and I will to the best of my ability answer any questions you have. When more information is available we will let you know.

That's from Trade Sales. They have also said that their will be more info on the 16th of May. Until then, anything else is just redshirt talk. They get fired for leaking the truth.

There are a lot of items that aren't going to direct - They are unavailable completely. This is not just a repackaging or 'all goes to direct' deal. It's being handled differently, and affects every single code that has metal in it.
