Which I appreciate the tip for forming plastic, I've never been a paper banner person but cast plastic ones rarely fit the physics of a conversion (weird wind patterns and whatnot).
Cheers mate The heating plastic banner worked even better than I hoped - and it meant I could avoid that ' flat curtains' look where the flag or banner is hanging straight down like there's no breeze. Those sorts of banners dont look too bad stuck on a backpack with a static, standing model, but on the back of a moving model (like a bike) it just doesnt make sense.

Thanks Roknar
Did some more work on my Son's Son of Infamy model and worked on the highlighting.
Son's son? Son2 of infamy?
Anyway - as I'm sure it shows, none of this is wet blended, as I didnt think I had enough time to really get work it on this model. I've used the 'feathering' light touch method instead, with my focus on getting some 'high contrast' highlighting to work.
They are not great photos tbh - I'll try to take some better ones tomorrow
Let me know what you think
Cheers

Nice work, dude. I'm always skeptical of variegated color schemes on paper, but you executed it perfectly. Great brush control. I agree with gobert that the red could be brightened up a bit, it looks like the blue half is a bit more reflective.

Cheers man I think you’re right & I gave the red a gentle touch up. It might be too gentle tbh (I might not have brightened enough) - but I reckon it’s done now. Knowing when to put the brush downing a piece is important to maintain sense of progress.
youwashock wrote:Great paint, as always. Bold scheme.
Thanks youwashock my son had painted half his army as Ultras & the other half as blood angels, so when he asked about a custom scheme I suggested the red/blue split to minimise any repainting

Thanks DQH - hopefully the finished product has brought the red up to where it needs to be I thought the scheme would be fine, but with the highlighting & everything finished it ended up better than I expected!
Anyway- the finished model:
I’m pretty happy with it, I’ve not really worked this hard on highlighting before.
I *think* the red is better here, but maybe its not... let me know what you think. Maybe it’s how I took the photo too... hmmm.
Next time I’ll need to spend more time working out where the light source is to keep things consistent. Oh well.
And of course the obligatory close ups
And we’re almost into March! New month means a new challenge, I’ll pop back in once I know what that’s going to be
Cheers all

March is always, Space Marines. The red on him works very nicely! It pops nicely, only way I think you could get more would be something like a spot white or hairline edge highligh white at a few extreme corners or tops of the orange streaks, but I definitely feel you on the "as far your confident pushing it" thing.

Amazing to see the finished bike champion, the contrast between "dirty" biker and shiny banner works really well. And agraxing really needs to be a proper verb. How does one contact those oxford dictionary people?

Great job KT, the red looks much closer in brightness to the blue now. The contrast of the warmth and cold of the 2 colours makes it hard to tie together, but I think you’ve managed it. The key areas where the 2 colours are on the same plate match well. The chapter symbol is awesome, the colours coming through the stars outline are fantastic

Thanks Vejut I *almost* put white dots on it but pulled back at the last moment lol
Don Qui Hotep wrote:The red looks great! The highlight that runs across the backpack really helps tie the two colors together to a consistent tone. Nice job on the shoulder pads too, love that heraldry.
Cheers man - I was very careful with the backpack (the line across the top and the dome on the back particularly) as I knew that this was where of the red/blue highlighting would either work well or fail utterly. I was worried about the sizing of the heraldry - so I googled and found a step by step 'how to' guide that helped https://dragoart.com/tut/how-to-draw-infamous-second-son-logo-21218

Thanks Viterbi - appreciate the kind words. As for adding words to the dictionary, according to my limited research ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Surgeon_of_Crowthorne) I believe a person needs to go be sent to a prison for the criminally insane after murdering someone in a delusion and then mutilating themselves. Adding words to the dictionary is surprisingly metal.

Thanks Gobert - thanks and thanks for the recommendation to brighten the red. I'm much happier with it now
When I did the chapter symbol I felt the star just didnt stand out enough, so I traced around it with one of the colours I'd used as a highlight. Glad you like it!
Ok - new month means...
I dont actually know yet.
Ummm....
I know, I know, I have lots of stuff on the pile of shame, but... but. Where possible, I've been trying to tie my monthly activity into either the Iron Warrior discord challenge or the GW model of the month. But this month's IW challenge hasnt been announced, and I've not heard anything about the GW model of the month.
so... I've working on my 'things to do when I've nothing else to do' pile. This normally means Greenstuff work. Ive attached a few wip shots of my 'PoxWalkers' here just so I'm not leaving my blog fallow for too long, but keep in mind that once the challenge is announced I'll put these guys down and may not return for a little while.
Poxwalkers - these were old GW zombies, but I'm giving them a swollen makeover. I'm trying to show that are infested with gross parasites that grow in their bodies and spill out to infect others. Some of these parasites can get quite large...
I think I've posted this guy before? He's finished.
Big Mouth: I think this guy is close to done just a little blending in on the arms. You can see the parasite at the back of his neck with its tendrils entering his eye and nostril.
this guys still wip. Tried for a fungusy growth thing on the back of his arm...
The Bird - just started on this one. Need to work on that hand he has outstretched as he flips the enemy off lol
super swollen I only have a shot of this guys back - I think he's one of the guys I couldnt find a torso for, so I used... old sprue and a tyrranid weapon part I think?
I actually started all these guys (I have twenty to do!) back at the start of 2020 so they are going to take a bit of time for me to get through. I might paint one or two at some stage though just to see how they work out You never know your luck in the big galaxy!
Cheers

Ugh - I typed up a whole post discussing what I am doing at the moment and now I find it didnt post! Doh.
Ok - redoing with - mostly photos:
1) I've been on about a weeks holiday (Coobowie on the Yorke Peninsula, lovely place ). While on leave I worked on a Deathguard model
a good start, lots more to do though
2) the next challenge in the iron warrior discord is 'psychics and priests' - basically any model that can use the psychic round. I'm redoing my old Tzeentch Daemon prince ie
Plan is to do a more 'feathered' model as this feels more tzeentchy - note the wing change
Also replacing the hand holding a staff with a hand holding a book
(finger and thumb swap as I try to make a right hand left)
changing the head a fair bit too - going to give him a bird beak
Going to adjust the head-dress too - not sure what I'm doing with this one though...
Let me know what you think Any cool ideas I should think about?

Love your ideas for repurposing the demon prince, I think you've made good choices to get a more tzeentchian feel. Although as an avid Pratchett fan you have to add a second "z" to the "wizard" in the book

Cool stuff as ever darkkt, the feathery wings are much more tzentch and less night lords. The (I’m assuming) bread tag beak will look cool, though I’ve no idea where to go with the headdress. Scarabs maybe?
Death Guard chappy looks nice too, will he be getting the glowing green from his eye hole?

Thanks
Damn, that would have been a great idea (although I have no idea how the hell I would pull fit another Z in...) anyway, I'm sad to say I covered up the word 'Wizard' with Greenstuff already
gobert wrote:Cool stuff as ever darkkt, the feathery wings are much more tzentch and less night lords. The (I’m assuming) bread tag beak will look cool, though I’ve no idea where to go with the headdress. Scarabs maybe?

Cheers Gobert Death guard will def get some green glow happening, otherwise he wouldnt fit in with the rest of the squad!
Hmmm... I havent done scarabs on the head (yet) but I like the idea of scarabs a lot. The model needs something to really tie the Tzeench feel together...
Progress has been slow - I think I'm dithering a bit really as I try to find a balance between what I want to do and what have the skills to achieve. Its easy to get discouraged by choosing something too challenging for yourself (as you get disappointed with the results), but if you dont try something new you never get better (and you get bored/disappointed with your effort). Sigh....
Lets see where I land I guess. Anyhoo - its pics time!
Spell book:
Things can get breezy in battle, so my DP has a heavy skull & bookmark in place to make sure that he doesnt loose his place:
And whilst its a terribly angled photo, I've added some armature (random soft bits of wire) that will form the basis of a spell effect 'drifting off the pages' . I'm thinking like a miniature 'age of sigmar endless spell effect' with *something* comeing off the pages (lightning, fire, smoke, .... something more interesting...) happy to hear to suggestions at this stage )(although keep in mind I dont want the spell book to 'steal the show' )
I'll keep the book separate from the DP for most of the build I think to get things as accessible as possible for sculpting. Actually, Maybe I'll keep it separate and magnetize it for easy storage... hmmm
Daemon Prince:
Assembled with minimal adjustments:
FYI - Adding those metal wings made me remember how much of a pain in the ass it was the first time I added them. Jeebus... thank you GW for plastic.
I decided he needed a tail.
This is both an aesthetic choice and a cheat - I like the look of it, but it also provides a nice extension of the work I need to do to merge wings with the guy's normal armour. By making the area bigger, I *think* I can do a better job of blending the metal and the flesh. When I was doing the sorcerer on a bike, I extended the GS mutation over the chest armour because the 'fleshy arm sticking out of space marine suit' looked a bit lame.
Fingers crossed that it works lol
And now the work on the head -
I took the step of removing most of the simple headdress part and played around with some different options. Honestly, some of these looked better than the one I eventually ended up with, but they were far too large and probably wouldnt have fit with the wings.
This is what I've settled on
So, let me know what you think

The new horns certainly look cool, better than the original ornament imho. I like how the tail seems to extend up to his helmet too, a nice chaos-y detail. How did you do the base? Did you carve the GS before or after it went off?

Thanks G - whilst I was happy with it at the time, the original helmet suffered from my general impatience. Glad I'm finally having a second crack at it. The base was a little of both - I 'scultped' the soft greenstuff into rough cobblestones, then drew on a symbol and cut that symbol. I wanted it to look like the symbol was carved into an older floor.
The symbol is the Seal of Metatron again - the symbol I used on the front of the chaos sorcerer on a bike. Its both simple to do and suitably 'mystical' to suit
And we have progress!
Did some work on the 'spell effect' coming out of the book - decided I'd go for a spectral demon or spirit coming out of a glowing smoke emanating from the pages...
Hmmmm
Starting to build up the smoke
And then pu tting on some ghostly robes - the next step will be to blend the robes and the smoke to be 'seamless' and to sculpt the claws and sleeves
I did a little more to the base - adding in some candles. These are more rubbish (chuppa chup sticks and bits of plastic tube) cut to size and topped with greenstuff:
Wait a minute... what's that on his belt?
Its my attempt at a scarab! Not sure how happy I am with it at the moment. I'm leaving it so I can get used to the idea. Ultimately if i figure it doesnt work I'll just scrape it off and pretend it never happened.
and finally, some helmet progress:
Let me know what you think

Hi everyone, thanks for the encouragement Glad to hear the book generally viewed positively - hoping I can keep it heading in the right direction as it progresses
Speaking of progress, it was a pretty productive weekend, as I finished the greenstuff work on the model, started and finished painting the base, and continued my Greenstuff work on the book
Lets start with the... base. Because this is finished. I think.
So I posted this one last time:
Then i did an undercoat of light grey:
(some of the black marker still showed through - but no big deal).
Then I did a few washes of nuln oil:
Then I laid down the magic symbol with blues and white, trying for a very subtle glow effect. I also did the candles in a wraithbone and agrax wash.
And finally, to finish it, I highlighted the candles with a mix of wraithbone and yellow:
I'm thinking its pretty much done right now. thoughts?
The book - was more robe work, not a heap of new stuff to be honest...I did however magnetise the book and the hand:
In this pic you can also see the layered 'crest' I put on the top of his head.
The bottom of the book still needs to be tidied up - but Im focused on the top part first
My connecting work was... less than impressive tbh - but I was silly trying to put two magnets so close together. Lesson learned.
Still - as shoddy as the work was, the guy still holds the book well enough:
Ooh, I added pointy claws to the 'spectre'
And I did a bunch of details on the DP model
work on his back:
I made and added a chain to hang around his leg for... reasons...
I added some rings to his left hand to cover up my shoddy greenstuff work
skull ring
Ring and a decorative chain
fancy work around the wrist:
And (although I dont have a pic right now) I have just undercoated the DP. Its shown up a few little... flaws? I might need to fix those and then re-prime. Better to do it now I guess than ignore them and try to paint around the problem.
And that's where I am. Let me know what you think!
Cheers
KT

excuse me while I try something here:
normally I post pics in order of activity - from stage 1 to stage 5 - but ive found the thumbnail when it shows up on the 'Project Logs' is then always the least impressive. I figured I'd try the alternative by posting the best pic at the top - and then posting progress below.

Cheers GcG I think its the attention to little detail that are what most people love about GW miniatures, so I try to replicate this as best I can where ever possible. It also helps that adding a little Greenstuff to certain parts covers up ugly joins and unfortunate gaps

Thanks G I've used cheap jewelry chain myself in the past - and and given its size it works a treat for larger items (i.e. vehicles or terrain):
the stuff I got however doesnt work well on normal models however, even the really large ones like daemon princes. At 28mm a jewelry chain would be like a shipping anchor chain. You can get proper sized hobby chain, but I'm working on a budget at the moment. (and lets be entirely honest - I just wanted to see if I could make it work )
So, time for the progress update (even though posting the pic at the beginning gives the game away lol) - I've undercoated the head again after smoothing down an error I saw, and have started on the wings as I wanted to try the following tutorial from @savage_ork_guy on instagram (Louise Sugden - a GW illustrator I follow - https://www.instagram.com/p/B81niG5HYJ9/?igshid=hsyrr637q0jm)
Step one - Primer baybee!
Working with the new primer still - light grey. Going to try for a brighter model this time around.
Step two: check the paints I have against the reference pics:
Of course I dont have an airbrush, so we're blending using my wet pallet.
Step three:
Slap that paint down!
Step four (maybe step 7 because I was focusing and forgot to take interim pics):
Check against reference material
Pretty good. Happy with this It's Not exactly the same, but I only wanted to replicate the blended effect, not to copy the exact colour structure of the wings.
Step 8:
re-Post the glamour shots that have already technically been spoiled by posting one of them at the start:
So - overall pretty happy!
But...
The wings need more depth in the textures. I think I'm going to have to go over them with some washes, then rebuild (redo) the blending to brighten it up again, and then do the highlights. If I had been thinking ahead I would have done the washes first, then tried to the blending of colours - there would be less re-work.
Me - that's a pretty tiny problem to be honest, and even if I end up having to re-do the wings completely, I know I can do it (it wasnt hard as it didnt involve being too smooth with the blending - almost dry-brushing really) and I really like the effect.
let me know what you think!
Cheers
KT

Super conversion work. I really like the look of the wings so far, so will be interesting to see what you do with them.
