HamHam, for all we know, those are just his tabletop quality stuff, and his display quality stuff is tons better, but I agree. Not to discourage you, but if that is your maximum level of painting achievement thus far, you really should reconsider.

Dont listen to the nay sayers. If you want to enter a mini in any painting comp, even the golden demon, go right ahead. Dont let people talk you down man.
Look in the tutorial sections here in DAKKA, use the search function and Im sure youll find plenty of light sorce techniques. Good luck man

The other thing to remember about GD is that the judges will be looking for something unique/different/crazy.....Following an internet guide about how to paint glowing eyes will not get you very far with them :( Learning a new technique from said guide, then using it in an original way will get the judges interested @KingCracker: Well said sir! No one ever got better at anything by not trying it. @ OP: The GD is a great occasion to ask questions about painting. Some of the very best attend every year and i have yet to meet a single person who wasn't willing to share tips or discuss techniques. Dakka is the same; post your work and we'll all try to give you some feedback

That's a little harsh, his paintings not that bad. He paints better than me!
Anyway, just look at things with a different perspective in real life. You'll notice things about the way light moves.

Thanks guys for most of the posotive attitude but have a look at the bronze winner and compare the painting on that to mine. the only reson he got third is because he used light sourcing. if he used it better he would of got gold. Automatically Appended Next Post: also in my picture the pictures are rubbish you would see why i am entering it if you saw it in flesh

Madman, no offense, but I think you are underestimating the quality of the winning models.
If you want to work towards light sources, then by all means do it.
You should never give up on trying out new techniques or styles based solely on your level of skill, but please just don't expect to be painting to golden demon standard with them quickly.

I'm not sure which LoTR miniature you are referring to but I guess this is the Bronze awarded Diorama you meant, from Jeff Willhelm?
Umm...he's used a lot of source lighting yeah but I think it might be a bit rich to say....

Funny, to me light sourcing is to painting what the b/w with one color bit photos are to general photography. A gimic, and actually kind of lame. That diorama would look a lot better without the bad colors.
As to the OP, it looks like you've started using a fair few techniques, I think I see evidence of blends and dry brush at least. What seems to be lacking in those shots though is precision. Something that seems to come only with a lot of practice, something I'm still working on myself. Basically, good work, now keep at it.

the light effects above would look awsome if it was dark enough to cpntrast that much light, its just like NMM its getting over done
the pic above looks like in the middel of the day so the lcd would not show as much as this, its a nice diorama but.....blah blah
to the OP your painting is great youll get there soon but remember, its all good if you love your work andthats all that matters

See I have to side with everyone above, but although OSL is "lame" to some, this technique is a far advanced on in miniature painting. Even in any contemporary or tradition painting sense. The ability to blend a color and lighten it into another color is a very tedious task, and one that is only accomplished when an artists painting level has hit a great success.
You must get wet blending or even layering or feathering with multiple colors down before you can accomplish this technique.
BTW, OSL doesnt always win competitions. No one technique will win you GD. Originality and perfection will.

Some suggestions:
1) I'd paint the skulls the same colour they are usually painted in GW's pictures. They look a little artificial when they're green.
2) Clean up the Tyranids, and loose the bright colouring on the gun tubing.
3) Add a bit of pink to the infestation marker, it looks a bit too dusty and not organic enough at the moment.

Needs to be cleaned up substantially. The transitions are far too grainy, and look like they've been done with some fairly simple drybrushing. To get very far, you'll need much smoother transitions.
The white on the Terminator (especially the face) suffers from similar problems. The coverage appears pretty weak, and unless there's some extremely complicated freehand detail there that I'm not seeing, you need a lot more coats (and probably a better build up under those coats) to get a nice, solid white.
Also, your color selection isn't helping you a lot here. The only bright colors you have are drawing attention to all the wrong spots. The bright yellows and blues on the bioweapons, and purples on the claws pull the eye away from more visually interesting and important places, like the Terminator, and the faces of the models. I suggest brushing up (art classes are your best bet!) on color and compositional theory. The different elements of your composition should bring the arrangement together. Right now, the colors and placements of the models just make the eye jump around randomly, and makes it look like a confused jumble.
Finally, you need to tie your diorama together better. Elements like the tyranid growths look like they've just been dropped on, not grown organically, and the Warrior looks like he's falling backwards off of the rubble, especially with his one hoof raised. Right now, it looks more like a handful of separate models have been thrown onto some scenery for a picture, not like a cohesive diorama.
Keep painting! You're in a decent place right now, and if you keep practicing the basics, and work on new techniques, you'll get there yet.
