With the coming of the Eighth Edition of Warhammer Fantasy and the resurgence in popularity of the game I'm dusting off my old Southlands Skinks army and getting back into the game myself. Haven't played the game at all since before Seventh Edition came out, back before the current Lizardman book came out. Not sure exactly when may last game was... But it's been awhile. Despite the loss of the special rules for the Southlands, I'm going to stick with my old themes and fight for the glory of Skinks everywhere.

Back in the old days I used to be an even lazier painter than I am now, and spray based all my figs while they were still on the sprue. As GW did not have a yellow spray, I'd used some crappy paint from Menards, totally not suited for minis. At one point I attempted to stripe the metal figs, and put them in some plastic containers of Pinesol, right before I stopped playing. Apparently Pinesol is strong enough to pretty much destroy all detail on metal minis if you leave them in there for a few years! The plastic stuff is usable, and not too bad on the details, so I'm working on salvaging those. Everything will be repainted, with different units being painted up with coloring based on different species of lizards.

First up, Salamander Hunting Pack. The Salamanders themselves were lucky enough to have actually been stripped and cleaned before I got out of the game, so they're in great condition. Their handlers were not so fortunate. Used Saurus Spears to replace the Javelins on some Skinks to make a much more varied unit of Handlers, with much more serious looking prods. The Salamanders will end up painted as Fire Skinks while the Handlers will be painted as Fire Bellied Newts.

Next are the Twin Sons of Tepok, a pair of Skink Priests who's job it was to defend the army from the enemy's magic. I need to use the new word guide in the new Codex to come up with some names for these guys and my other characters. Yes, they quite purposefully used the same fig, and were purchased near the end, after I'd stopped spraying everything yellow. As purple coloring was associated with being marked by Tepok, these two will be painted up as Flat-Headed Agamas.

His coming foretold, and marked for greatness by the Old Ones, the general of my army. He too needs a good name. To fit his status he'll get the white coloring of an Albino Leopard Gecko.

Last up for now is just a simple Unit Filler made from Tenhenhauin's decorative base. The Skinks in their block will be the General's bodyguard, and get painted up as Green Anoles using a mix of both the green and brown coloring, with their usual red neck frill being replaced by red head crests.

Everything else for now are just basic Skinks in various shades of yellow or up to red, except for the one block of hand weapon/shield Skinks who are unpainted. Need to get to fixing up the arms and getting the units of Skirmishers formed back up, then get to painting everything. It's an army I've always wanted to paint for the variety of actual effort I'll have to put into it for the different patterning on the different units. Needs to gets to painting...

I use agama colours for my saurus, it's an effective scheme. I'm curious how you're going to do it.

Quickest, most efficient way to add points to a Lizardman army? Dig thru the piles of stuff on my desk until I find my old Slann and his Palanquin. The Palanquin was going to get used for something else at one point or another, and had all the spikes and the big overhead curved piece removed, so I felt it was a good opportunity to make something more unique to stand out in the army. I'm planning on giving my Slann the Lore of Life and decided to build his Palanquin accordingly. I suppose this is what happens when you take a 100 year nap in the garden. Clearly it still needs a bunch of Green Stuff work. After which the trees will be painted the match the Forests I Made Up For Store Terrain, and the Slann will be an Albino Pacman Frog.

Oh man, that's an awesome idea for the Slann. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

I'd have to say, though, having some leaves on the palanquin-tree would enchance the effect greatly, as if it were being kept alive simply due to the Slann's magical energy.

Additionally, if you could find some snakes/lizards/jungle life to hang out in the trees, that would look really cool.

Love all the ideas for the painted skinks - the general looks very cool, although I think a bit of extra detail on the weapons/helmet would really make him stand out.

Ouze on GW: "I'd like to be like, hey baby, you're a freak but you just got too much crazy going on, and I don't hook up with bunny boilers. But then Necrons are going to come out, and I'm going to be like damn girl, and then next thing you know, it's angry sex time again.

It's complicated."

That skink cheif is pretty cool, like the leopard gecko-ish skin, but I feel the gold could do with a liberal wash of maybe Leviathan Purple however to tone it down and add a mystic/ancient look to it.

Just my 2 cents.

The tree looks really good from the front but... not quite as much from the back. I'd leave off the root section (it looks like the skinks randomly tied a tree on the back) and use a little greenstuff to make some root tendrils wrap around and even under the lower part. Sort of like how a strangler fig looks. It'd tie it together more, and rough tapered sausages aren't too time consuming to make.

That Slann looks like he should be from Laputa...

I can see where Morgrim is coming from with it in it's current form; though with some greenstuff you could easily make it look like the tree has grown over part of the throne like an old temple in the jungle. If you included things like paving slabs and clumps of soil in amongst a large root ball under the throne it'll look ace. I'm very tempted to give this a go myself at some point

Minor update on the Slann. Added in some leaves and another branch to fill the tree out more, and put on an owl for the first of the fauna. Still sans Green Stuff, however I do plan on having some dirt balls in the roots, and more roots along the underside of the Palanquin. And I've never seen The Fountain.

Got my first unit of Skinks painted though. Eight Skink Handlers for the first of two pairs of Salamander Hunting Packs done up as Fire-Bellied Newts in sharp contrast to that first character. Yes I intend to base them at some point, I'm just undecided on quite how I want to do it as of yet.

Two updates in one night! Started painting the Salamanders and really liked how their scheme was working out so I just didn't stop painting and now they're done. They're done up as Fire Skinks. It amuses me that the Skink Handlers are painted up as newts while the Salamanders are painted up as skinks. After I get another Salamander and convert up four more Skink Handlers for him, I intend the paint the handlers as various types of Fire Salamanders, though I have not decided on a color for the actual Salamanders as I think I've used up the good "fire" lizards.

Got a bunch of stuff on the stove being primed black in anticipation of their chosen schemes, and in the mean time I looked around for a picture of another good scheme to paint up one of my units of Skirmishers in. Finally settled on a Baby Caiman Lizard and got a test guy painted up to make sure I could get the colors right. I think they came out really well and close enough to what I was aiming for, so now I just need to get his nine brothers and sisters painted up.

P.S. Yes, I know Skinks can't get short bows anymore. I converted this unit up back for my old Southlands list, and I and the others at the FLGS have decided they're perfectly acceptable for "Counts As" Javelins.

P.P.S. If anyone has any links to some lizards with cool and not Too complicated color patterns, feel free to share em.

Finally got the unit of Caimans done. My general dislike of sitting down and painting, plus the fact it was more than my usual drybrush or dip made it take longer than it should have. I'm determined to get my painting skill level up though working on this army! Next up will be a unit of 10 Skinks with actual Javelins and Shields, painted up as Five Lined Skinks. Though I think I may work on getting two units of 5 Chameleon Skinks made first so I can up my point level some. I think those will be a simple plastic Skink with bulging eyes and a curled tail done with Green Stuff. I want to make their unit really colorful, and don't want all the frogs and stuff on the metal models covering up all their skin.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
P.S. Still interested in ideas for what to paint the second pair of Salamanders as, to go with their Fire Salamander Skink Handlers.

An idea for the second set of sallies might be the Red Headed Agama - they've got a unique color scheme going on, and the red head fits well with the concept of them spewing flames (at least, I would think so.)

Very cool! I'm really liking your painting theme!

I think the head on the skirmishers should be a little darker, maybe a wash of the red from the salamanders...

Have you googled poison frogs? It's kind of an endless resource to our ends. I'm using them as reference for my squigs.

Haven't really done anything more with the Slann yet. Don't have very much Green Stuff left at the moment, so I need to get more first.

I'm generally avoiding the poison dart frogs because they're already used fairly often by people for things, so I'm doing other lizards and the like to be different.

For the Salamanders I think I'm going to use Fire-Bellied Toads and Fire Salamanders for the Salamander and Handlers, though I'm deciding who gets what yet.

Got my 40 strong Big-Block-O-Skinks all built. Skinks were absolutely not made not be ranked up. Those tails that stick straight back Severely hamper their ability to line up in formation. Because of that, I decided to capitalize on the current fad of Unit Fillers and made a bunch of big bases with multiple Skinks on them. I also added on Skinks onto the larger-than-necessary bases the Krox sit on. In the end, the block only has 36 actual Skinks to represent it's functional total of 40, but I doubt anyone will notice.

In my mind I don't see Skinks forming up into nice even ranks like disciplined soldiers, so instead they're put into more of an uneven swarm, with the Skinks on the bases of the Krox further helping that image. I see this more as a giant Horde of Skinks washing over their enemies. This is going to be one heck of a chore to get painted up. Good thing I've decided a large unit of Skinks like this will get painted up as a very common lizard, Green Anoles, in a mixture of both their green and brown colors. For an added bonus, Skinks that form in up blocks are most often the more war like breed of Skinks refereed to as Red Crested Skinks, and anoles have a Distinctive Red Dewlap, which I will paint their crest to represent.

You are on to a great start. Are you going ti include a..... I forgot the name..... Carnosaur? You know that big big dinosaur? for a color scheme I suggest to look at wildlife sites. Look for lizards.

Just type in lizard skin in google, and let the inspiration get you.

Just found this, nice! I love the schemes your doing on your lizardmen... makes them look like the various little lizards you can find in pet stores, with all the wacky/cool color schemes on their skin

Lovin' the slann idea, as well! I'm assuming his inclusion means a carnosaur will be a no-go, not to mention that you have to have an oldblood (saurus) riding it, which wouldn't fit with the skink theme.

Knowing Aduro's ways, the possiblity of a Carnosaur in a Skink army would lead to an awesome conversion...
