Hi all,

I haven't converted many models yet, so I thought it would be fun to post these shrike conversions and see what you all think. It's my first real serious try to paint as well.

The body is from a warrior. The tail is extended with the end of a gargoyle tail. The two pairs of wings are taken from two gargoyles. Equipped weapons are devourer and rending claws.

The jumping ones got converted legs, wanted one straight and the other needed to be slightly adjusted to look like it contributes to the jumping.

Bases are only painted light grey because I haven't decided yet what my tyranid game board will look like. The contrast it brings is enough for now.

Sorry in advance if some angle(s) feel redundant.

Comments are very welcome!

Since no one else who looked wrote anything I will good and simple conversion and the colour scheme is well too ( what did U do with the gargoyle bodies ? ) .

I would go for winter on the bases or possible desert , it makes the best contrast .

Paint job is nice, very understated. I wonder, did you base that off the colour scheme on the front of the 3rd edition codex?

As far as the conversions go, very nicely done. Double sets of gargoyle wings suit the agile yet heavier warriors, and I think the extended tails help distinguish them.

I think you should go with the contrasting colour onthe base too, bur be careful with this selection as the subtle colour scheme could be lost to an overwhelming contrast.

Great work overall though, especially considering you say you've done relatively little converting.

Looks nice. How have you painted the black? Is it just gloss varnish over the top? It gives them a good alien feel.

Thanks!

The gargoyles contributed with wings and tails. I cut off a bit of the warrior tail and extended it with the spiky gargoyle tail.

And thanks for the base tips. Desert sounds nice. I haven't decided what theme I want for the game table, but at least it will be a mostly devoured area.

Thanks alot!

I based the color on the old Alien movies and art by H R Giger. I also find the black to be a sort of logical color for an alien predator, which suits my way of thinking at least. The idea with gloss varnish is to make them look wet and contribute with some natural highlighting, since I prefer to paint highlights as little as possible, in order to keep them as black as they can be.

Thanks!

I spray painted the black. For the highlights I first mixed some codex grey with dheneb stone. Same with second layer, but with more dheneb stone. Third layer was painted with dheneb stone only, but only on the very edge. Then I added some 6-7-8 layers of badab black. On the chest I highlighted with dhened stone and fortress grey, mostly dheneb stone. Same on claws. I tried to keep as much of the black as it was. The gloss varnish was added after all of that.

Good idea. I was looking around for larger wings, considered the Forge World ones.
Hadn't thought about using just another pair of wings.

I especially like the look of the Forgeworld wings, however, these wings are just as awesome as the ones from FW. Excellently converted and painted

Superb, great work on converting (yet another) model they don't make for the Tyranid codex.

I particularly like the flying models with the pins.

Flying models like that may cause some true LOS issues with unscrupulous players. I'd suggest a plan to have some extra models or proxies for silly LOS problems models like that can cause only if you plan on tournament attendance.

I'd like to see finished examples once bases are complete.

Well done!

Using two sets seemed believable and they turned out to work really well. They are easily attached together with the regular arms, on top of it so to speak, and they fit nicely below the back armor too. It was also a lot of fun to glue them on in different angles to create more dynamic poses. I suspect you can find several more poses that will look nice.

The flying ones were a bit difficult for me, since I am not used to converting. (I think my only conversion before this one was a horrible claw for a carnifex.) The angled hoof was not as much of a problem as the streightened out leg. By that time I hadn't discovered I could superglue the surface of the greenstuff in order to make the leg stay still as I made it. When I made the second leg I, fortunately, knew about that trick.

What silly LOS problems do you mean? I have never attended a tournament and am not sure I ever will, but what problems can the pinned ones cause? And what do you mean by having proxies?

Certainly, good creative work does deserve praise! Especially with the extra work to share it! I might steal this idea I like it so much!

Silly LOS problems, LOS for Line of Site, 40k is a True LOS game, and taller models play differently as targets and when firing. Since the flying examples are taller than the original models they may be exposed (for good or ill) more often than the regular models. It may begin to matter which models are where and which are removed as casualties for firing with and at the unit.

A technical player may claim they were modeled for advantage to shoot over things, or you may be giving up opportunities to hide them when they are modeled flying. Here is an example image to demonstrate these concerns with a simple hill:

Proxy models are just original substitutes to be used when and if this becomes an issue during a game, extra models modeled grounded is what I suggest.

A short discussion up front might make everything ok too, assuming mutually that all the models are actually on the ground regardless of how they are modeled.

Make sense?

Good luck! Lets see the finished ones!

I see! Thanks for the effort to explain it to me. I understand how this could be a technical rule issue, something which begun as "they have wings, they can fly, of course it would be cool to pin a few!", hehe. It makes sense.

Is it usual to, for instance, agree on that they are all on the ground? Wouldn't it be difficult to apply the LOS rule then? Since you can't really know if you see it or not. I am no tournament player, but I would probably want to treat them as they are. Like you said, it's both for good and ill anyway.

No trouble, this isn't the rules forum afterall.

Sure, I think playing them as modeled would be fine, it was just a simple comment.

You mileage may vary!

They are not genestealer claws.

Shrike 3 has the rending claws from the Tyranid Monstrous Arms sprue. The others have Ravener rending claws.

My first Harpy is already done: Harpy conversion. I have begun to paint it. I am also working on another Harpy Basically the same concept, but a bit more slim.
