Yea I loved Dawn of War. But, Dawn of War 2 kinda ruined it for me. I mean only four squads of marines? what happened to crushing everything with loads of tactical squads in the original Dawn of War.

In about 7th grade, me and a friend of mine began to develop a strategy game with different types of units that we drew out of paper with rules for moving, shooting and fighting. By high school, we found that someone had beaten us to the concept about 20 years ago. We all bought WHFB Armies, but my friends are all slackers and never did anything with them. I started a 40k army because it was more popular in the area.
Looking back on an almost forgotten childhood memory, my Mom had gotten a 2nd hand copy of Battlemasters. Looking at a spear wielding goblin riding a wolf permanently warped my young mind.
I've not been able to escape the plastic money pit since.

I think your Dad and I would get along great!
That said, I've always been aware of 40k because I painted miniatures for RPG games when I was a kid. Heck, all of my modelling paints were Citadel because it was the only alternative to Testors and I didn't like the enamel. I only actually started playing the game because my buddy gave me a rule-book 2 editions out of date as a gateway kick-in-the-pants because he'd wanted to play for 10 years. He just happened to catch me at a weak point between hobbies and with enough spare income to be able to swing an army.
I can't fathom how kids can actually afford to get into this game. Not besmirching them or anything, but I can never recall a time I had that much spare money and my own father would have seen it as a plastic money pit as well.

Long story Ho!
For graduation my dad got me the mines of moria starter kit because i was SUPER SUPER into lord of the rings, i didn't play it much but at the end of summer we were coming home from Ottawa and we stopped at a Chapters, and i saw my first white dwarf, my dad would not buy it but when we got home we went the the local Chapters and found the white dwarf featuring the start of 7th edition of warhammer fantasy that came with the free models, and thus my incursion into the hobby began...

I was in Amsterdam, and me an my dad went to the amsterdam dungeon. While we were walking there I saw the big sign from GW and thought they sold playstation games. So I entered with my dad and this guy walked to me. He asked what I like most, future wars medieval wars or lotr. Ofcourse I said LOTR and 2 weeks later I found my lgs and bought the mines of moria set.
Half an year later I went to thailand, and I wanted something to read. I came across some used WD which were being sold for 1 euro each. I bought a few of them and red them in the plane. At that moment I saw an battle report featuring Crons and Sm and I just loved their looks.
When I was home again I decided to buy 1 Sm and 1 Necron model. I came home with the AOBR box though (:

I started because my bro and uncle who is my bro's age and my outer bro got this cool box of plastic dudes that you paint. My brother ended up playing with his friends and I started painting guys. When he got sick of gw and moved to Halo I painted and built all his stuff he had. at some point I started collecting IG. my painting was better than my brothers when I was 7 and he was 12. I never played a game Intel a 2 years ago ish when I meet some dudes that went to my school and went to a LGW. I played with them a few times and now i cant stop myself. But why want to? Check out my Army and such Here.

I started with the PS2 game Firewarrior. I was into that kind of thing and it was fun, needless to say as I was hearing about the Space Marines from the sergeant who was giving me the missions they kinda scared me a bit to have to face. One time I picked up a book off my cousin's floor that used to be inside the game's case while he was playing a different game. Inside was the promotion for the tabletop game and White Dwarf. I thought it was pretty cool, then I looked at the four fully-painted models and then I just had to play it. Ya see, I was also quite the fan of RTS games and I was looking for something like 40K for some time. I went to my local gaming store to get some models with my mom and I wound up getting the whole Battle for Macragge box set. I played Ultramarines for some time after that. How I got to Orks is a whole different story.

I started young. It was a messed-up time during the 80s. As a young genius I had to find an evenue I could master for myself by simply reading and practice.
After putting down a tome of the "Lord of the Rings" - which I got for my 12th birthday from a highly-esteemed and respected family friend, I found D&D. I mastered it after becoming the GM fairly quickly, and looked for a game with more sophistication to master next. Warhammer Fantasy RP, WFB, and then W40K appeared in the form of Rogue Trader, and soon I was working on this game whilst combining elements of GURPS to form a more sophisticated network of gaming experience.
I became a master of this landscape in next to no time in all honesty; however I continue to work on a gaming platform which combines the best elements of all the games I have played and mastered in the past.
I don't know if anyone still plays "Pit Fighter" in large numbers, but this is the game that has come to the forefront in my expansion and work of the Ultimate Combat-gaming Platform (UCgP).
I will likely make noise when it's finished, but for now I continue to work and play, and refamiliarize myself with all the new roles of FB and 40K whilst painting my armies.
Cheers,
Daniel Moszkowicz. The Troll-King of Chatsitea within the Theatre Cordillera.
For those interested in knowing why an UCgP is even needed now? My answer is that if you need to ask, You have too much of a disposable income. Bazinga! Nevertheless, good on you.
Ha-ha!

After having read the hobit and the lord of the rings and watching the movies I knew that this was awsome, then 1 day a freind of mine who also loved LoTR discovered GW and i started playing LoTR, latter that year it was my birthday so i came to blow all my money on orcs for my evil army, after spending a lot the manager gave me an old copy of WD, the front cover had a Leman Russ and a heavy bolter team on shooting at something, inside this 'holy tome' was several articles on imperial guard. I loved tanks and decided if i ever played 40k I would go guard, 3 years later my friends stopped playing LoTR and moved on but I moved onto 40k and bought some guard, this year i got my old group back into the hobby but instead we played 40k.

About 7 years ago I was taken by a friend to a workshop (not Games Workshop, just something an art gallery was putting on) about 3D miniature painting... the models just happened to be Fantasy Orcs and Space Marines!
I asked what they were, was told they were made by GW, and the rest is history! (I still have the 1st model I painted, a now-classic ork boy with a bow, sittting on my computer desk!)

My mum got me into reading SF in the late 70s.
By the mid 80s, I had read many of the seminal "classic" SF stories - Dune, Asimov's 'foundation', Harry Harrison's Deathworld (and Stainless steel rat) as well as being an avid reader of 2000AD.
I had heard about miniatures gaming from a mate. I went along to a convention and had a look. Got to playing WW2 in HO scale (mates were model railway people). Played a few 'historical' refights. Didn't really capture me.
1987: RT hits the scene. Was reading the odd issue of WD at the time and knew about this knew SF game. Bought the book. Background merged Dune, Starship Troopers, 2000AD, Foundation and Deathworld into one cohesive melange. Not a dragon in sight, either.
I was hooked.
