This is going to be a blog about me going back to my childhood gaming days and my first army in 2nd ed. A few years back i got rid of all my 2nd ed stuff and have regretted it to this day!...

So i have set about trying to rebuild my 2nd ed army by scavenging/begging/trading up to date marines for old ones!!

Im not building this legally in codex terms to start with, it will be whatever i can get my grubby little hands on!! all though eventually i want the 4th company of the crimson fists led by Cpt. Cortez (counts as pedro). I know the dark eldar have him in commoragh somewhere, but we are going back in time. ( i think the first referance to cortez was in 3rd... but hes my all time favourite 40k character!! )

At the moment i have a few things winging my way from fellow dakka users, you know who you are! a massive thanks to you all!!!!

Once i have stripped all the models i will start putting pics up, painting, and getting a cohesive army together.

Im afraid i dont even have a teaser pic for you, you'll just have trust me its going to happen...

Im so going to watch this im glad these old miniatures get some love cant wait to see mine (yours then) get painted!

I just hope i can do a good enough job on them!! While im waiting for stuff to come through the post i may put up some of my flesh tearers. Just to show my painting style, and get some tips on how to improve before hitting the fists with paint!!

May I suggest looking for the 2nd edition starter box marines, they are monopose but there must be an abundance of them out there.

Aye mate, i managed to grab about 4 old 2nd ed boxed set tac sqauds for around 2 quid each, cheers for the idea!!!... ideal for a spot of colour practice i think... its the rhino/razorbacks which are seeming harder to come across, think i have around 3-4 rhinos now but no backs... they seem to go for daft prices on ebay... especially the las/plas combo

This rhino was given to me by a friend !! the ablative armour was far harder to come across mind... as was the vindi top plate on the back. I know this tank has no fire points/ access points now. i did this for aesthetic! and the fact i used to run 1 like this!!



I also have a full box of 2nd ed devos waiting for me to savage them!!

Seriously I think it may be time to change the stripping solution, that's starting to look like a curry!

I think that it's a good paintjob on the termi! just needs to have the lenses etc picked out to add lighter tones to it.

How are you fixed for chaplains and librarians? Also I may be able to find a captain, apothecary and one of the old standard bearers. PM to LMK if you're interested.

Right now that's out the way. Loving the idea of the project, I started 40k in the 2nd edition so I looking forward to see a few of the golden oldies. Ah, nostalgia, ain't it grand.

As for the paint job, its little had to see but I certainly get the gist and it looks great. Will you be painting in the modern style or eventually going for a 2nd painting style ie bolder and more cartoon-y?

I was thinking about doing the painting old school and bright... But thats not me im afraid, more of a darker and grimy painter! (easier to hide mistakes )

I need a captain actually mate, remember the one with powerfist and bolter that they turned into an imperial fist? And i need a bucket load of old 2nd ed marine arms.. im very short of these! As well as bolters... any help with this would be reinbursed through paypal

I got some old marine bits but they're pretty beat up. I'll send them to you if you like see if you can rescue them. Don't worry about dosh, but if you had any unglued pintle mounted storm bolters for the modern rhino would be willing to trade.

Right, i have a whole bunch of stuff now, almost ready to prime... the stripping took quite a time!!

I will get pics up with any luck tomorrow.. although its proving to become a busy weekend!!

So for the moment i have a quite a good shooty force builing up

- 2 x chaplains
- 1 x termi capt
- 10 x tac sqd (metal) power fist/plasma/missile
- 10 x tac from 2nd ed box
- Rhino
- 5 x devas 4 x lascannon
- 5 x devas 3 x heavy bolter 1 x missile
- land speeder - melta/flamer
- 5 assault marines - no weapons yet!!

Thanks to all the lads that did amazing trades with me! you've been true gents!! This is getting me excited now!

Running real low on OOP shoulder pads and support vehicles mind... need to try and get my mits on some preds/vindis/dreads with las/missile

Awesome Liam, I'll be keeping an eye on this!

Coincedentially, I'm starting my own Crimson Fists army using mostly 2nd and 3rd ed models. My Sternguard are all the old Legion of the Damned models or the old metal armless marines with LotD shoulderpads, backpacks, and guns.

When I saw your rhino, I got goosebumps. I've only got one old rhino for my marines that's missing some bits (I have one of the old vehicle bits sprue to help with that) and actually have a complete set of the extra armor that you've got!

Those 2nd ed arm and weapon sprues are tough to come by these day. I've got a few but will need them for my own marines. If you need a couple shoulder pads, shoot me a PM and we can work something out. I'm still in need of the old plasma pistols and hand flamers...

I'll trade you a landspeeder for a 2nd ed dread with your choice of loadout I have about 4 or 5 of them.

Also I have located my rather limited supply of 2nd ed marines so just let me know a postal address and I'll get them shipped off to you.

Looks promising from what we can see so far. Id get more light on the models when taking pics btw. Makes it hard to give C&C like that, but they look very good. You'll have to let us know the source of the mini as they get painted up and pics posted. I dont see my old guys in there yet, was that before they got their?

@Lenny - Do you need the whole mount and everything, or just the two stormbolter halves?

I know exactly how you feel about your old army! I got rid of mine too and now i want them back... cant wait to see some of theold minis from back then. Nostalgia makes me smile!

lol whalemusic, it isnt that bad. On a relevant note, I find this whole thing v interesting, mostly because all these models are completely new to me! I look forward to the brushings of the paints!
