Another superquick job, should finish in plenty of time. Won't have time for anything afterwards... :(

Having just finished up my first Big Mek, I'm really looking forward to seeing a pro's work at one.

I hope you don't mind if I plug my Mek for comparrison. I know it won't be anything nearly as good as yours. If you want, I'll pull the link.

Because the KFF is so bloody useful and works better with standard ork tactics.

I'm not suggesting that there's no use for the other variation, but generally most folks with limited money and time will opt for the most useful/efficient configuration. I happen to have a very nicely painted Big Mech w/ SAG but he doesn't see the table too often. Just not practical in most cases.

I'm glad you like it, Winterdyne. I'm eventually going to add an epic scale vehicle so it looks like he's running an RC vehicle, and I couldn't imagine him relaxing without some extra batteries to go with it!

I tried to put text on the batteries, but my painting skills aren't up to anything I was happy with, so I eventually covered up that part. If you have any tips for putting lettering or faux lettering on there, I would welcome them.

Thin paint, very little on the brush and take your time is the only way. I find using a little glaze medium or flow improver rather than just water helps, too. Also work with grey rather than pure white at first to get better coverage.

You do need a brush with a good point, so look after your brushes...

Regarding the SAG, my mate's has to be seen to be believed... I think it may be going in GD next year...

That is one of my favorite Gw models to begin with (big supprise?) and seeing it painted that beautifully is surely a treat. Can't wait to see more pictures.

Today's progress. I need to redo the copper bally things, they're a bit scuffed, and carry on with some chipping, then varnish tomorrow. I reckon about an hour's work on the ork itself. I'm probably going to do another plinth (plain polished black, with a hand-engraved / scrawled brass on it), as I'm not happy with the groundwork on this one.

Amazing model. I totally love it, especially the coppertops in the bag. =-)

I totally realize that your painting skills are far beyond mine, but a couple of things I think you could improve on are the left forearm and the handle of the axe/wrench.

The left forearm doesn't look as smooth in transition as the other areas of orks skin you have on the model. Compared to the face or the upper right arm, it could use some more work.

The handle on the axe is just kind of boring. You have a lot of greys on the model already, and I think it would look better if it were a bit more brown, like his side pouch.

I really dig the chipping effect you have. Looking at the model, I know it's on flat surfaces, but I really feel like it's 3d chips. Any tips on how you do those?

In terms of colour scheme, your Big mek is really similar to mine.

In terms of paintjob, yours is sooo much better...

Great model. Until the closeups on the face, I didn't notice you carried over the yellow/black striping on the eyepiece. The bendling is smooth and color selection works very well.

I agree that the original display base did not complement the model. It had a more natural dirt/grass while the model's base has a lot more mechanical bits laying about. It seemed he was standing on a small, neat pile of junk. Good choice to change it out.

It's a bit hard to tell, but did you also add some weathering to his boots? It appears you weathered the base and it would seem natural to have that inched up a bit on the lower portion of his boots at a minimum.

Overall, very smooth work, great color choice and a cool and characterful model to compete with without massive conversions.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

No, other than chipping I didn't weather the boots - they're already a pretty dirty brown colour on the leather parts, and I wanted the red to pop. Thanks for the kind comments...
