Yeah. I heard he had a great sense of humor, yet someone (not naming names) thought I was trolling when I said I wanted to read his autobiography

All the vitriol is misdirected.

Should it be directed towards the BL editors who have final say in publishing?

Maybe some readers take things far to seriously. GW seem to be okay with Multi Lazors.

Nothing says you can't like the guy and think he's a bad writer who wrote a series of atrocious books.

Oh, sorry, I shouldn't be giving reasoned and measured responses should I? I apologise, and will now revert to kind:

Im not fond of hes books, if I am reading fan fiction I prefer when the authors keep within the boundaries of what the fluff has depicted or if there are plausible reasons for a change in fluff, for example Multi Lazers wouldnt be so bad if they were say an ancient, discovered weapon founded by the Mechanicum from the days before the Dark Age of Technology. But this is the only one left or there are very few.
I love when people get creative with the fluff but I do prefer it to be from a realist approach, sure you could have an army of Orks which have developed Tau tactics and even dress like them but dont make them into envoys, diplomats and preachers of the Greater Good, this goes against the Ork psyche completely.

With that said I have nothing against Goto as a person, Im just not a fan of his books, Im not going to force myself to read them and then send death threats to his home claiming that he wasted my time

In the end it IS just fan fiction, he is a fan of 40k and the Eldar so he has every right to write books about them however he wants, I just dont like how he does them.

Multi Lazors are one thing, but a fat drooling (!) child molesting Slaanesh worshipping Farseer as main character or torturing a female farseer for 180 pages before she is finally allowed to die is not acceptable and doesn't qualify him as an "Eldar fan".

As mentioned, he can be a nice guy, have a good sense of humor and be a gakky writer all at the same time.

I've suffered through three of his books and I can tell you, the vitriol for his writing is well deserved. Personal attacks about things other than his writing, not so much.

"Blame the editors"- I agree to an extent. OTOH, if his books turned out to be marvelous works, he'd get all the glory and the editors would get nil. Since the books turned out to be steaming piles, he deserves what he's gotten.

Wasn't he the single reason GW clamped down some rules for BL writers?

Do people not like his books because they are actually poorly written and bad, uninteresting stories, or do they just dislike him because his books go pretty far outside the bounds of established fluff?

The hate stems from both but I would guess more from the latter given that BL readers aren't expecting Shakespeare. Although, when you're okay with low expectations and someone still doesn't meet them . . .

Yes, all of it, plus all the perverse stuff (hidden as Slaanesh cult things etc) he throws at people, esp. Eldar fans buying Eldar novels written by this extreme Eldar hater.

Given the strong emphasis on debauchery nearly killing the eldar and giving birth to Slaanesh and then Slaanesh then devouring the eldar souls...

Yeah, that does blow colossal chunks IMO. But, then again, I think the Soul Drinkers premise is revoltingly childish and I keep hearing this kiddies voice telling me whenever I read the back of the book or hear about them that 'Yeah but they are choas marines with mutations and stuff and they're leader is a giant fething spider dude and some of them worshipped khorne, but no they are still for the emperor but yeah they hate the imperium and the inquisition and all that but no they are heroes not bad choas marines!'

*Choas intentionally spelt that way...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
What might have been interesting would be an uncovering of senior eldar trying to bargin with one of the Other chaos powers to gain an advantage over Slaanesh. Tzeentch seems likely or even a direct chat with old mad and angry himself, Khorne.

That seems entirely plausible behaviour for a Slannesh worshipping Farseer.......

Thanks for posting this MeanGreenStompa. I've never been very excited about GW novels because of price and emphasis on the Imperium. But he actually seems to be taking some risks and giving the eldar actual personality. For an alien race older than dirt, they've always been portrayed as far too monolithic and idealized. ie. bland. Based on this interview, they might just be interesting.

I'll be picking up one of his books this weekend.

RH: It started when I asked some local students about their WH40K (Warhammer 40,000) games. They told me that they’d set up a tournament for the following week in which two teams would play against each other, one side representing the ‘Goto-verse’ and the other side representing ‘Reality.’ Apparently their group was divided over your novels, and they wanted to battle it out in the form of a game!

CG: Wow, that’s amazing! (laughs) But I wonder who won?

RH: Reality won!

CG: Of course. Was this because the eldar armies on my side kept fighting amongst themselves? Or perhaps it was because my Space Marines suddenly became full of existential angst and walked off to sulk in the corner? Or may be my army was an uncomfortable mix of eldar and Marines who didn't trust each other and just watched as the whole planet exploded?

RH: They did say something about introducing a special ‘succumbing to decadence’ saving-role for the eldar armies!

CG: Anything about multi-lasers?

RH: What?

CG: Never mind

AFAIK, all of the Astartes in his novels wield Multi-lasers, which by fluff doesn't make any sense. (As Astartes don't use multi-lasers, and they are usually a vehicle mounted weapon, requiring (IIRC) more power than a lascannon to operate, due to the high strength and rate of fire).

There was a tc squad equiped with MLs in one of his books.

There was also a razorback that in the next paragraph was a land raider than the next was a razorback again.

As I recall, he described a Space Marine Devastator (or Terminator? I'm not sure) utilizing a multi-laser in one of his books. This kinda became the stamp for his violations of 40k fluff, and thus MULTI-LAZORZ became a new meme! Yay!

Btw, I laughed while reading this. It's great to see that he's got a sense of humor about his own work....It makes him a likable person, and gives one more reason why Uwe Boll does not count as anything resembling the word entertainer.
