To be fair, a lot of authors make mistakes. The difference here is that there should have been an editor to catch this faux pas and fix it before it hit the shelves.

It's not the fact that he goes way outside the fluff, or that he makes mistakes, that makes me deeply detest his writing.
It's the fact that what he substitutes for the established canon is terrible. It's far worse than even the silly nonsense that GW put into the Blood Angels codex.
It's the fact that his mistakes are ridiculously obvious to the point of breaking the flow of the book. When characters switch heritages in the HH books (which happens a lot it seems), it's like a hiccup in the story where I say, "hey that's odd." When a Razorback turns into a Land Raider, I stop and reread several pages trying to find out where the Land Raider showed up, and when I finally give up I say, "What the hell was that?"

I think you guys are assuming that Goto simply doesn't care about the fluff, made a lot of mistakes because of low interest, and is simply out to crank out as much 40kcruft as possible to get a paycheck. I think maybe you guys have this wrong.
Have you considered that C.S. Goto might simply be... TFG? You know the one. The one who doesn't want to show the army list, who always seems to have just the right piece of wargear for whatever the situation is, and when finally pressed to see the army list, it's an unreadable scrawl of gibberish? It would definitely explain a razorback becoming a landraider. Especially because TFG doesn't buy models, and it's all jist a bunch of red plastic cups anyway.

Ok, the mistakes I don't really care about, the reason I can't read his book is because they're very very badly written. It's the same reason I have a hard time Ben Counter or Aaron Demski-Bowden novels.
But you seem to have posted the same thing three times in this thread. In a world where genocide, complete lack of mercy and psychopathic xenophobia are NORMS, where the Chaos God in question is regularly cited as a being born from the worst, most debauched excesses imaginable, I can't really consider anything 'filth'.
It's ok write to slaughtering billions in the name of the Blood God, but a child-molesting Farseer - now, CS Goto, you've gone TOO FAR....

I haven't read one his books myself but from reading the interview, I might.
I think it sounds a quite refreshing take in certain aspects. Some of the 40k books I read, and I have read a few, turn out to be little more than glorified children books.
But 180 pages of torture might be too much, 179 would've been ok though ... maybe with a picture?

Here's an old review of one of his "works", complete with examples of why he feels " CS Got sucks".
http://forums.relicnews.com/archive/index.php/t-77273.html
And another...
http://forum.emperorschildren.net/viewtopic.php?t=1123&sid=63ce980120915da5557b70b6d682bba9
The second link had this gem:
"When reading his work, you must do so from the perspective of looking at a 5 year-old's drawing. Don't look for a masterpiece, don't even look for something good. Just smile, and say they're doing well, because you know it can't get worse."
Goto and 40K don't mix. Maybe he'd be better off in another genre or IP. Feel free to pick up any of his books and give it a read. More than likely, you'll end up waiting at the No to Goto bandwagon stop before you're through the entire book. Hopefully it didn't cost you the price of the book.My only hope is you didn't pay to read it.

From http://forums.relicnews.com/archive/index.php/t-77273.html:
Then there's my personal favorite. An entire squad of Terminators slaughtered by a carnifex. Not so unbelievable right? Until you realize that they did not engage in close combat. The entire squad was killed by a shot form a barbed strangler. Appearantly the barbed strangler in this book was AP2 or something. It was so powerful that Terminators armed with chainfists (you know, those things designed for cutting through armored bulkheads) could not cut themselves free, though they did struggle a bit. The Terminators armed with those silly regular powerfists, the ones with a destructive energy field that can punch a hole in a tank, couldn't tear through a single strand.
hehe, based on this review, I picture how this guy thinks 40k fiction SHOULD be written; the author valiantly attempts to create an atmosphere of a desperate last-stand by the noble marines, but they just keep making their saving throws.
" The horrid monstrosity bore down on the noble marines, eviscerating... oh, bugger, rolled a 2... almost eviscerating the first mighty warrior, lunging over the shattered corpse ...oops, strike that, ...somewhat bruised Emperor's Finest before tearing apart his mates... what? they ALL made their inv. saves? Unfrakkinbelievable! er, giving his mates a stern shove... wow, these dice are terrible! I'll never finish the chapter at this rate!"

I think kroothawks objectivity is somewhat suspect.
It is not one continuous torture scene. It is a series of torture/maiming scenes with some pages in between reserved or other parts of the plot. The Farseer already arrives severely wounded, is beaten almost to death in the hospital by Space Marines, survives, is dragged to a vessel, attacked and ripped apart by daemons, then crashes with the vessel, then crawls out and then finally dies. Gory enough for you?

Calm down Kroothawk me old chum!
It all sounds rather tame but I have to say I do get a kick from reading truly dreadful sci fi novels. Especially those based off established canon. The intrigue it creates is making me want to go out and find a copy right now. Hopefully it is as dire as you portray it to be.
Is C.S Goto just dialling his efforts in? I think that is a yes. Is he an average writer? that's a yes as well.
Is he surprised at the backlash? He probably cannot understand it being as his bosses green lighted all of his work and don't seem to give a toss.

I've never read any of C.S. Goto's books but in general I consider books, especially those from licensed properties, to have a sort of 'disbelief credit' that can be added to by cool/insightful stuff (making the reader think about the setting, really neat set pieces, or just well-done 'cameos' by setting elements) but then is spent on setting tweaks, etc.
Michael Stackpole has toed the line on this, for me, at least. I disliked much of his Shadowrun fiction he wrote as it went against the established setting or at least strained disbelief in various ways. His Star Wars stuff wasn't abd, and while he went off on his own a bit it was generally for the best and paid off by being true to the setting in other ways. I don't remember much about his battletech fiction, but I believe that annoyed some fans, too.
For Shadowrun, I remember one series had a werewolf-guy that was much less interesting than the 'established' werewolves of the setting. Shadowrun Werewolves were described as 'awakened' animals that could act within human society, but were clearly not human, and a couple fun books played with this idea, but Stackpole's was much less interesting "guy who turns into a wolf" writing.
For Star War, he fleshed out some things the original source never did, like vague hints that vehicles needed fuel and such. Very reasonable, and added, not diminished, the enjoyment of the stories.

The S is Sebastian.
I haven't read any of his books due to the overwhelming bad reputation they have. The quote I gave above was from the reviews section on his website, which unsurprisingly is quite bias and I'd guess quite selective in what reviews it actually shows on there.
