In your head, screwing with your thoughts...

I've been trying to find this with the new search function but it's not pulling up anything on-site, so I figured I'd start a thread.
One thing I've always struggled with is painting a good-looking red cloth of any sort; I always come up with substandard results. For example, right now I'm painting up my Skarlock and I decided I want to paint the cloth a deep, dark red. But I don't know how to pull it off and have it look good. Do any of you have any tips and/or possibly tutorials on how to do this?

EDIT: Tips still appreciated but the more pressing question now is the ink one, scroll down to my next post...

For dark red clothes, I use to do it this way:
-Base of Vallejo gory red (I cant remember what was de GW equivalent, I think its Scab Red)
-Wash of Devlan mud.
-Wash of Baal red.
-Higlight it a bit with the base color.
Also, if you want it a bit darker, you can do a badab black wash between the Devlan mud and the Baal red.
I hope it helps you!

Its from my Redemptionist Gang I've done. Here are the details of painting the Red Cloaks.....................

The red cloaks were Foundation Red, and then the Yellow Flames painted on with Foundation Yellow. The cloak was then covered in Brown Ink. The Red was then Red Gore, leaving the Brown Ink in the deepest recesses. Red Gore was then mixed with Blood Red, for the next coat, and then followed by Blood red, followed by Blood Red mixed with Blazing Orange for the first highlight, and Firery Orange for the final higlight. The yellow, was Foundation Yellow, leaving the Brown Ink in the deepest recesses, followed by Golden Yeallow and then Bad Moon Yellow.

Unfortunately, you can't buy Firery Orange as GW has removed it from the colour range. If anyone has a pot or knows where to but it from, let me know.

A bit of everything really....... Titanicus, Bolt Action, Cruel Seas, Black Seas, Blood Red Skies, Kingdom Death, Relic Knights, DUST Tactics, Zombicide the lit goes on.............

If you can get your hands on the BA white dwarf there is a great tutorial on how to do red cloth using GW colors.

In your head, screwing with your thoughts...

You know what, that's some damn good red cloth you did there! That's exactly what kind of look I want to pull off, except maybe a bit darker... My only concern is, it seems like the brown ink is a particularly important part of the mix, and I don't have any.
Now I do have a pot of Bestial Brown and a Vallejo dropper of Black... How would I go about mixing myself a Brown Ink equivalent? What ratio should I use of Brown/Black paint, water, and whatever else? (I think the secret ingredient is dish soap?)

Just get a pot of Devlan Mud - it's talent in a bottle.

Noted, but there are 2 problems with that suggestion at the moment. The first is that I don't go up to my FLGS until Friday, and I'd like to finish this model long before that.
The second is that I'm broke as all feth.

Still waiting for a recipe, I need that before I can continue painting and I don't want to waste time and paint trying to experiment...

Update of sorts, I've started basecoating the red. I can't proceed until I have that recipe though...

Ok, finally got my text through to my email... Here's a wip shot of the Skarlock after having the red basecoated. It's not actually blurry, I'm just that good...

Like I said before though, I can't proceed until I have that recipe...

Fantastic shot of your Graham McNeill Omnibus. I love the weathering detail along the spine, especially the light staining on the edges. Sublime.

Try moving the model a little further from the camera or using macro mode The book being in perfect view means your model should be that far away from the camera in whatever mode yo used. Can offer comments then!

I got free vostroyan model once. I painted the cloth blood red, then inked the recesses f the cloth with green, giving a dark, dirty look, without looking green.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

You could try mixing a little black with mecherite red as your base then just blend up adding red gore and blood red until you're happy with the shade? or do you really like the ink washed look?

My phone sucks so it has no macro setting, but I could certainly push the model further away...

That's the sort of effect I'm going for, yes. Although I might want to touch it up with a slightly brighter drybrushing for myself.
