so I'm planning on doing some penal legion for my IG. All of the current models will be vostroyan and I will be using catachans as a base (short on time and money) and I would like to know are there any other schemes for the legionaries. I dislike the orange and the black as I think it's too cartoon-ish.

So are there other schemes that you have used on your penal legion to good effect as I'm fresh out of ideas.

I say just do them in a solid or very simple colour that contrasts with the rest of your army. The reason I recommend them contrasting rather than matching up is that I have always thought that they should be easily distinguished as prisoners. This is why the orange and black and white stripes came to be in real life.

contrasting colours eh. That would be some knid of green blue or yellow (to go against the red) and the tanks are cream coloured so thats probanly a green or blue.
Should I paint them bright or dark to stand out (my army is painted like the ones on the GW website)

Dirty, ripped and ragged uniforms - no nice warm fur jackets for these guys. And no helmets - all they get is improvised hats made from wrapping rags around their heads, or nothing. Paint them as cold and unhappy-looking as you can.

You're sure you want to use catachans? running around in the snow in just singlets would certainly give the cold look pretty well but personally I'd use Cadians.

Yellow and black. They're used on street signs for a reason: it's the combination easiest to see, even in the dark.

Although make sure they won't look like bumblebees or street signs.

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

Funnily enough, I was going to suggest using empire flagellants with catachan arms, and painting them based on GW's mordian blue foundation.

Most probably because I got the idea from Rabid Ferret's plog!

I would do an orange, but as you say it looks too cartoony, so tone it down and dirty it up as best you can. Once you have a really faded, gritty orange shade down, your penal legion will look just like the worthless dogs that they are.

I'd probably do green or blue if orange doesn't suit you.

You could always go the Last Chancers route, and just have everyone in different uniforms...

Those are very nice, I like the officer in particular!

Back on topic, my immediate preference is a Batman-Begins-Arkham-esque orange, but as you've already said you don't want to do orange, something contrasting. You mentioned bright red, which might be worth a go - ties them in with the rest of your army, but still makes them stand out

Looking for fun articles on painting, tactics and wargaming? Are you after a new regular blog to follow? Are you a bit bored with nothing better to do?

If the answer to any of the above is 'well, I guess' you could probably do worse than read my blog! Regular wargaming posts, painting and discussions

You could paint them Black, it would contrast nicely with the red vostroyans, sort of like the blood angels/black rage guys. Yes dark grey clothing with black armour.

It has been varified by John Hurt that the Ultramarines are indeed the greatest space marine chapter.

The idea of flagellant had occurred to me but I've always considered the legionaries to be a bit more than a bunch of ragtags (essentially conscripts) and that they were a bit more hardened so a cadian/ catachan mix might suffice

I'd make them look like ragged post-apocalypse survivors with rag-tag clothing. Ripped up blue jeans, padded vests that don't have sleeves for some reason, a couple GS baseball caps. Sort of like a recruitment gang raided a trailer park.

That or make them look like gang members. Tattoos, gang colors, the like.

I'd go with a pure white for them,.(refrence the Prison garbs from the movie "Gamer"), with black printed numbers on the back.

If I were to go the road of apocalyptic survivors would models from the necromunda range be worth it say the Scavvy Gang or House Delaque. Does any one know of a way to but these models in smaller amounts to get it up to 10 models.

I think you could go any way you want to with the color of the uniform, but gray or other dull colors work best. But what you guys are all over looking that any penal legionnaire worth its salt is going to have gang tats, also you could paint the catachan bandannas to represent former gang colors too.

You can always go with Inquisitor Arpio from the Maricopa Sector: Pink pants, white shirt with a black stripe around it.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

I'd go with something that cannot be mistaken or altered to look like your main army colours should prisoners try to escape - so probably green, blue and possibly yellow.

As for me, I see them as hardened veterans, who all have their specialty, but in game terms relate to generic rules...

So I've planned to paint mine in various colours, depending on their history & origin, as for GW's official Penal Troops minis (Schaeffer's Last Chancers) :

My WiP -affiliated Traitors - War on Tranch : Renegades
The World Tree's offsprings - Various WIPs : Skavens, Tzeentch & Nurgle CSMs, Marine Swap
My first tutorial - Object Source Lighting
What will I achieve in 7 months? : Radio Omid is online

"Squat Hulk- in space no one knows you no longer exist." - Gitzbitah
"Now you're just being silly, everyone knows red paint tastes fasta." - monkeytroll
"Both servers are on different continents so space meteors or thermonuclear war will not be enough take out dakka hopefully." - legoburner
Please remember to tick the "Disable Voting" box, if the pics you are uploading do not deserve votes (ie. early WIP, blurry pics, batreps, ...) Thanks in advance.

I'll probably paint them in an olive drab colour so they can't be mistaken (and I don't have to buy new paints )
