http://www.news.com.au/world/british-lottery-winner-must-pay-2m-to-wife-who-dumped-him/story-e6frfkyi-1225958985843
A MAN who won a massive lottery win was was forced to give a £2 million ($3.2 million) share to his ex-wife who dumped him 10 years ago.

Divorced Nigel Page, who won £56 million ($89 million) was sued by Wendy, for £8 million after his EuroMillions jackpot this year, even though she left him for another man in 2000, The Sun reported.

How is it possible that you can get more money out of a guy you left 10 years ago? This isnt maintenance for a kid. This is 2 million pounds that go into her wallet.
If shed supported him while they were married so he could get a degree to become a lawyer and then had his own practice after they divorced i could maybe understand. But this was a random lottery win! Did she give him the numbers?!

Maybe the numbers he chose represented the numeric value of just how much he hated her?

Jog on! It'd be cheaper to have her clipped!

I'd do it for a quarter of that.

Seriously, Mr Lottery winner if you happen to be reading this...

According to the article, the payout is most likely because they weren't divorced 'properly' at the time - so unfortunately for him, it's all above board. Moral of the story; if you are going to get divorced, make sure you get the decree nisi before winning the lottery!

That said, I feel really sorry for him - his ex sounds like a real gold digger.

Though if that is the case, could not payment be denied as she is an adulteress?

No idea, I'm afraid; my interest and knowledge in divorce law is sadly limited. However, I think 'blame' is really only of interest in the divorce proceedings and has little bearing on payout.

Maybe the guy can sue whichever lawyer he had who didnt ensure they were divorced properly.

I get the feeling they never engaged lawyers when they divorced and so it probably wasn't a legal separation, hence why she now has grounds to sue him for his winnings.

More accurately, this woman is a gold digger. If there were awards for screwing around an ex, shed win and he'd have to pay for the awards ceremony.

Lesson:
Gotta tie up loose ends.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I agree with Chongara the guy really dosen't have to worry if that's all she got, that being said isn't there some kind of law that says if you're seperated for long enough then you're legally divorced? Kind of like a reverse common law marriage?

It all depends on the divorce.

1. Did you finish the divorce properly? Did both sides sign and file? Did he follow it up like a hound dog until he was rid of her or was he lazy?
2. The terms of the divorce could force him to pay a percentage of his future earnings as alimony.

Edit: Along those same lines, when you divorce and remarry, make sure to name the new wife as the beneficiary of your will, your pension, and so on.

How an unfaithful ex of ten years can feel entitled to any of this mans winnings is beyond me...if any sort of cosmic justice exist ,this woman will purchase a new Ferrari with her ill gotten gains and then proceed to wrap it around a tree at 180mph.

more to the point, with that sort of money how come he didn't manage to buy himself a legal team that could win it for him? Surely that would have bought a team that would get you off muder and have you paid compensation by the family for dragging up the nasty memories of you killing their relative.

and surely with what's left, i'm sure he could spare the cash to sue her back on some grounds just for the hell of it!

It does suck though that things like this happen.

Didn't bother reading the story, is it possible that the divorced couple had a child together? If so, then the claim may have been made in the name of the child (in the US at least when a couple divorces one parent usually has to pay the custodial parent 'child support')

Its the moral of the story. If I had 90 million pounds, I'd gladly give some to my son's mother, even though she cheated on me and he lives with me. But if the b sued me for it through a loophole, I'd be just as pissed

If I had 90 million pounds I'd spend one or two million of them on a good lawyer to try and make sure I could keep as much of the rest as possible.

A new day, a new time zone.

He probably did spend money on a good lawyer, who told him,"You didn't properly finalize the divorce, so while you can try and fight it, paying me a lot of money in the process, this is the dictionary definition of throwing good money after bad."

Or he can make a hefty donation to the church and get the previous "marriage" annulled retroactively due to her infidelities over the last ten years, then sue HER for abandonment and the other guy for alieniation of affections.

Bit late to this one, missing all the shenanigans and what nots.

I spoke to my wife who works as a legal secretary.

If there isn't a clean break order then everything is fair game. If the ex had remarried she could not claim regardless.

Ho hum, lesson learned and all that. He's still 50 million up so don't feel that sorry for the geezer.
