They're from Paulson Games. I remembered them from when he first put them out, and specifically looked for them again when I wanted to get some because I think they're the best of independent bitz Bone Swords. I may have to order some of the Warrior sized sword and Lash Whips, but haven't decided if I want to do a unit of those yet or not.

Was a full week after I ordered them before they shipped, and they showed up with a ton of flash and mold lined around the entire thing, but it was super easy to clean and there are no defects in the material. They've got a kind of fake omi-hand thing, where they're all the same, no left or right handed ones. No back of the hand and no fingertips. Figure I'll do some green stuff work on those this morning since I can't put it together just yet still.

Finally got some glue and got this guy put together. Consider for a moment that this Hive Tyrant was started when the plastic `Fex kit came out, not with the current Codex, but with the previous `Nid Codex. My projects can hit truly epic levels of Limbo, but still come out completed in the end, even if they're not what they were originally intended for. Now I just need to paint this mean mamma jamma.

thats a lot of Bone Swords...

TBH, its a bit of an upright stance for my liking... I like my 'Nicds leaing forward a bit more.. I think it makes them look more predatory. But man, thats a whack of attacks.

Very nice. Looking forward to seeing some paint on him.

Yep, I be Old School `Nid player. I've always associated Hive Tyrant and Warriors as being of higher intellect, and having the taller, straighter posture. I slacked off when I did the normal Warriors, and they've got the stock hunched pose, but when I did the Alpha I made him straight and tall. The plastic Tyrant was likewise designed from the start to be straight and tall. The sophisticated and intelligent shepard, leading the flock of hunched and savage beasts.

I wasn't going to put mandibles on because I didn't think I had anything that would work for them and be of a good looking proper size. I pulled out the Trygon sprue to look at the mandibles on that and confirm that they were indeed too large. I caught a glimpse of the Scytals on the frame though, and their little thumb, and though "Hmmm, I did have to cut up a couple pairs of Scytals to get the arms for the Tyrant, I wonder how well those thumbs would work." Turns out they work perfectly.

While I was at it, I gave him the little claw tail tip. I'm not going to mess with trying to give him a long snaking tail, and definitely not the double tail he's pictures with in the book. And the serrated double horn blades are completely out of the question. I actually made a point of taking of the ridiculously long horn that's normally on the Tyrant head and replacing it with the more reasonably sized one from the `Fex kit.

I also decided the swords were too crowded in close, and reposed the arms on the right side, bring the lower one up close to replace the posture of the upper one, and then having the upper one with it's already straighten out arm holding it's sword down and away from the body.

Also pictured are his pets that he uses to help keep away unwanted door-to-door solicitors. The Tyrant Guard who's job it is to help keep him alive with their ability to let him get cover from Gaunt and their Lash Whips to keep the enemy from attacking him in melee before he gets to properly hack it to death. And a new pair of Hive Guard, both somewhat heavily reposed. One leaning back and popping off a high arcing shot, and the other about to demonstrate that those claws they've got aren't just for show.

Plan is to have all five of these painted up by the end of the day Monday, once again timed for use for the FLGS 40k night on Tuesday.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh, and since it's been awhile, and the Tyrant's taking center stage again at the moment, here's an old picture of it standing next to a metal one, to show off his exceptional stature.

As expected, I've been procrastinating on gap filling and painting the stuff. I did get the green stuff done today though, and they're all primed up and ready for me to paint tomorrow. While I was getting those done though I also did some weapon swapping on my unfinished Warriors to get myself a second unit of Dakka Warriors. Despite the bad rep they get due to their susceptibility to Instant Death from Str8 weapons, that unit of them I got painted up has been doing pretty well for me recently and I wanted a second unit of them for when the occasion demanded, and I was never going to use those Scytal/Rending ones I had. While I was at it I also decided to make up a Venom Cannon for this unit and one for the first.

I hate the Venom Cannon that you get for Warriors. It's just too large and bulky looking. When I gave my Warriors a Venom Cannon back in the day, I simply gave them a Barbed Strangler, and cut the seed sac thing off the ammo arm and called it a Venom Cannon. This time I decided to make it look more like what it's supposed to be, and added the bayonet from the Venom Cannon, as well as green stuffed in a similar style gun tip. Those two key details should make it easily recognizable for what it's being used as.

Six Warriors? I Might even get these painted up tomorrow as well!

And from out of left field comes painted Zoanthropes! I owe a guy at the FLGS a game, and given he's currently playing Imperial Armor with five Leman Russes at 1000pts, I figured I should get some better anti-tank units done up. I cleaned up the excess green stuff around their necks, and then bent and twisted their tails a bit to give them some more variety. Thought they'd be a quick guys to paint up, but those tiny armor plates going all the way down their back and tail proved more of a pain to paint up than expected. It does turn out to make them surprisingly more colorful than I would have thought them to be though.

As a result of the above, and that I ended up meeting up with my dad to go see Warrior's Way (decent, enjoyable flick), the only other guy I got done was the Swarmlord. I probably should have painted up Hive Guard instead, because I won't be using the big guy for a couple of weeks yet when the FLGS' league gets up to 1500pts, but I was anxious to see him done after the fig had been a WIP for so very very long.

Now I punish myself for not finishing my list of things that I was supposed to get done. Was going to buy the first of a pair of `Fexes this week, but now I'm not going to let myself buy anything until I get the backlog of units that are primed and waiting to get painted all finished up. For those keeping score, that's 2 Hive Guard, 2 Tyrant Guard, 6 Warriors, 8 Genestealers, and 20 Gargoyles. REALLY need to get all of that, minus the Gargoyles, done before this coming weekend because there's a tournament taking place, and I want my bugs to look their best.

So the comment about the Tyrant Guard being tiny in comparison now infected me. I had started to paint up the Tyrant Guard and Hive Guard, and got to thinking about how similar in design they are, with the exception that the Hive Guard are bigger and better detailed. Got to holding stuff side by side, comparing part sizes, angles they could be posed at, and decided I'm going to make new Tyrant Guard out of Hive Guard. At the same time, I'm going to equip them with a Bonesword rather than a Lash Whip. This leads me to a question.

The `Nid codex has special rules for being armed with a single Bonesword vs a Pair of Boneswords. The Tyrant Guard only get a single Bonesword, but have nothing in the off hand to balance it like the Warrior's have a Lash Whip. Should I give them each a single large Bonesword like Swarmlord has, and model them up two-handed, or give them a pair of Warrior sized Boneswords and just tell people they only have a single sword (as if most opponent will know what that means).

I think the pair of Boneswords would look better and more distinctive to the Swarmlords larger swords, and would be a lot easier to get better poses on them given the way the Hive Guard's sternum sticks out as far as it does.

Because the Swarm Lord has four boneswords and I'm certain neither the Hive Tyrant or Swarm Lord can take a shield.

A shield would balance out the Tyrant Guard's weapon load out, and I do still have the ones I used for my old Tyrant Guard... I'll have to think about that one.

If the single bonesword loadout replaces all other weapons, why not make it look like it's holding a two handed bonesword?

The more I looked at those two new Hive Guard the more I grew to dislike their more extreme poses. That combined with the fact I've decided to make new Tyrant Guard out of Hive Guard and I wanted to set the two types of Guard apart by having the Tyrant Guard be the ones more melee oriented and upright in stature got me to disassemble the two newest Hive Guard and rebuild them.

Also decided to break the arms off and rebuild my Genestealers. When I put them together so long ago I put the wrong pair of arms in the wrong sockets. It's always bugged me, and I wanted it fixed before I painted them.

Because of the time spent rebuilding these two units I only was able to get the two Hive Guard painted, but at least it's more than I got painted last week. The new ones are the two in the middle, Minwax still wet and pooling.

So I was looking around the interwebs the other day for evidence of Moloch's continued existence, and to see what he had done with the Alpha Warrior he purchased off me awhile ago. Didn't find anything new from him in many of months, but I did come across This Trygon. I really like they way the hands were done, a super cool idea. Coincidentally I was about to, and now have, gotten a pair of Carnifexes. I want to give them two pair of twin-linked Devourers, but that looks kind of silly and tiny on the model, so I wanted to give one two larger Devourers, each one counting as a twin-linked one, then give them a pair of close combat arms, as even fully gunned, a `Fex is steal darn strong and mean in close quarters. I hadn't actually decided what to do for those CC arms yet, and these giant rending claw hands were a perfect solution. So this marks my fourth use for Carnifex Crushing Claws for something other than Crushing Claws. At least it's the first time I'm building a Carnifex as an actual Carnifex though.

Anyways, here's my version of those claws. Still need to green stuff around the knuckles, and I'll have to harass the roommate for some more of his Trygon spikes for the second set.
