Alright, I think he's finished... Again... Added some of the webbing to the tubes on the gun's surface as well as the carapace bitz near the end of the barrel. Noticed he was still missing his tongue so I gave him a new one. Patched the joints between the scytal arms and claws. Most importantly, new left arm and hand. While I don't think it works out quite as well as the right arm, I think it's MUCH better than the first version and I'm much happier with it, so I'm pretty sure he's done for the time being. One thing I might do later though is make a couple of different gun tips that can fit on the end of this for the Flamer and Punisher variant weapons.

I would make the claw round the the gun 'meld' into it a bit more. Makes the gun look like a separate thing.

Actually I let it look like the second hand was not attacked to the gun, so that he could let go if he ever needed too. He's clearly plugged into it thru the main pipeline on the back, and as well thru some secondary "wires" on the right hand. With need to feed anything in thru the left hand, I don't see a reason to attach it, so that he could let go if he needed the extra hand to fight or climb something, or just to better adjust his aim.

On to the next project! I said it was going to be Alpha Warriors, but I lied. Instead I'm going back to another project just as old as this first one, though one with much less revision to it during it's history. When the plastic `Fex first came out, I saw a pic from an enterprising individual, who might have been Dakka's Yakface himself, where they had put the thorax on backwards. IOW, the head in the waste slot, and the waste into the head slot. This causes the `Fex to be far more upright in stature, and comments were made that it could make for a good Hive Tyrant. Being that I'm a fan of bigger is better (just look at the previous T-Fex), I went with it.

Since turning his Thorax around causes his vents and carapace to go the wrong way, I cut off his back from his chest and flipped it around. A slight adjustment to positioning and it even gives you the "hood" that the Tyrant has. I cut the joints in his legs and feet so I could extend them out for a bit more height as well. He originally had a `Fex head, but when I was getting back into `Nids a few months ago I was able to procure a Tyrant head from someone else, thought it was missing the forehead blade. I replaced it with the one from the `Fex kit, which I like better as it looks more in proportion to the head than the super long original. His weapon load out is changing as well, from a Venom Cannon and Devourers, to a Venom Cannon and Bonesword/Lashwhip combo. I've lined up a source for a full Tyrant Lashwhip and a Bonesword minus the blade. Shouldn't be too hard to make a new blade out of plasticard. Otherwise this guy should not require near the work as the T-Fex, as he really just needs a new neck and leg joints. I think I'm going to give it a shot at making a four set of Vents to go on the first carapace plate, something the metal Tyrant has.

Anyways, here's where he's at now. As you can see he's still recovering from the big New Years party and is relying on his faithful Guard to keep him from falling over. (I broke and reglued some of the joints so he stands up at a better angle.)

Well, I've only had this guy for some years now, and I've finally gotten around to sculpting back in the joints in his legs. Also gave him a neck and patched the gaps on his vents from what was apparently horrible build work putting his thorax together. The biggest hole I'm not going to bother trying to fill, as it is under this back carapace and can't be seen unless you pick up the fig and turn it upside down. The amount of Green Stuff it would take to plug that makes it north worth it.

Unfortunately I dropped him while working on him, and his forehead blade shot off somewhere and I can't find it. The guy I'm getting the Lashwhip from said he has a bunch of extra so I'm getting some of those and a bunch of extra spiky bitz from the `Fex kit at the same time early next week. I've also got some pieces of Plasticard gluing together to carve his extra set of Vent stacks out of, but I'll let those go overnight since plastic glues takes so long to fully set up. Otherwise as I said, not nearly as much work involved with this guy as with the last.

All those years of Boy Scouts and the associated wood carving skills finally paid off! Carving out one vent from a block of plasticard is pretty easy. Carving out a matching pair? That's a pain in the butt, but I believe I've got them reasonably close to identical. Green Stuff in where they join to the carapace and add in some extra details tomorrow.

I actually really like the Tyrant head without the huge spiky bit on it... for some reason it looks a bit more menacing to me

Anyways, keep up the good work! I look forward to your progress on these beasties

Oh no, I'm no where near good enough to be a professional sculptor. I'm pretty good with the conversions and such, taking existing things and rearranging and combining them in different ways to cool effect, but not raw sculpting.

My Green Stuff work that tends to look good falls into two catogories. First is pretty much simple flat space, ie the gun's surface and the carapace work on the fex. Second is a simple repeated pattern pressed in with a tool, ie the honey comb, the neck, the webbing.

My attempts to sculpt actual detail myself tends to come out looking fairly poor vast majority of the time. You can look back at the first version of the left hand I did I see it's really not very good at all. Not nearly to the level of others I see on Dakka. There's a reason that when I went to make the Vents for the Tyrant I carved them out of blocks of plasticard rather than trying to sculpt them up myself.

Anyways, enough talking down myself... He'll get a head spike back, but not one of the giant ones the Tyrant heads usually have. I don't like that either, like he's over compensating for something. I do however still feel the head blade is a key Tyrant marker at the moment, so I want to get him one in there, and the Fex bit is think is a much better proportional size and fits on real cleanly so he'll be getting another one of those to replace the one he lost.

Me too! Same for programming...

Since getting into plasticard myself I'd say this was a smarter rather than "not good enough" move. Also saves on Green Stuff and is much easier to work with (IMO). Keep it up!

That tyranofex is badass. Cant wait to see him painted up and stomping on the enemy. Great job. I might do nids in summer after my Guard are done and my beast men. Those pics have given me a lot of inspiration.

Vents are all done up. All that's left really will be making a new blade for a Bonesword, as the one I'm getting is missing two thirds of it. Whip and horn are just little things to put on, with no real modification necessary.

Those truly are great vents. I wish I had that kind of skill, but I don't! What kind of tools did you use to shape the plasticard into those vents?

Glued two pieces of 2mm plasticard and one piece of 1mm plasticard into a block. Used a razor saw to cut the block down to a more appropriate size, then shaped it with a Dremel grinding bit. The details were put in with a tiny spherical Dremel cutting bit, which I'm not sure if I've ever found the opportunity to use that particular one before. Edge of a sharp file to get the small grooves near the top opening. Then I've got an assortment of sculpting tools for Green Stuff, including the one GW sells and a stitch removing tool for crochet which tend to be my favorites.

very nice.....that hive tyrant looks really good....at first i want sure about the extra vents, but theyve grown on me. alot. i think the hive tyrants legs look a bit out of preportion to its head, but as there isnt much you can do, if anything, to change it, so no worries. LOVE the tyrannofex. and the hivetyrant is really bad ass....can we get a scale comparison with a gaunt?

At this point the Vents do look kind of out of place to me, but I'm attributing that to them being the stark white in color compared to everything else being grey. I'm going to hold off posting a scale shot for the moment, because it's 40k day at the FLGS and I plan to take my camera down and see if I can't get someone to let me take pictures of my guys next to their unaltered `Fex and Tyrant. Otherwise there is a shot further up this page of the two standing next to a Marine.

Oh, and since I had nothing I could do with the Tyrant at the moment... Humble beginnings of an Alpha Warrior.

I like the vents, but instead of plasticard I think I might do with greenstuff casting and then extra greenstuff to blend it with the carapace, for when I try to make some. Given the way they're cast in two pieces in the Carnifex, it would be easy enough to make molds.

Oh wow - at first glance at the Alpha Warrior pic, I wasn't sure what you were doing - whether it was some fancy 4-part GS mold or something. But now I get it. Dig it.

Thanks for the info! I have a dremel myself, so I might actually be able to use that tip (since it doesn't involve actually carving something)! The Alpha Warrior should be awesome. I was just going to be lazy and use the 3rd edition Hive Tyrant.

Aduro's Tyranids: Because Size Matters.

Really, really nice work on both the biggies so far. Pose and mass are really everything, and you've got both of them worked out. My only criticism is that honestly the honeycomb structure on the T-fex looked better without the edges.

Can't wait to see the rest. Subbed!

Back from the FLGS with pictures! Got a shot of what the size of a valk base would be with the T-Fex on it, as well as shots of the T-Fex next to a Carnifex and my Tyrant next to the stock metal version. I think I'm going to go ahead and get a valk base for my T-Fex as he looked much more proportional to it rather than the one he's crowded onto now, and it will help create the dynamic I have in my mind of Wound Count vs Base Size with the new `Nid book.

Oh, and here's the "sword" I have to work with. I had thought he'd cut the blade off to use as a spike for something, but no, apparently it was so he could use it as a weight under the base of something else that wasn't standing up very well. He was given much flak for that the whole night by everyone there.

Ouch. A base weight, huh? Yeah, the bonesword on my 2nd edition Hive Tyrant looks like garbage, but I don't trust my modeling skills enough to try and change it.

I swear, the worst part about doing any of the projects like this are the dang legs. Trying to get the feet all lined up on a level plane and having the leg positioning look good is a real pain in the butt. Even now as I was writing this I noticed the hips has moved from where I had wanted them and had to mess with it, so I guess sometimes it's a good thing that plastic glue has such a long work time. He's turning out to be a a fair bit bigger than a standard Warrior, but not a super huge difference, which is about right given the slight uptick in his stat line. Sure enough he does only have the same three wounds as normal Warriors, so he's stuck with the normal Warrior sized base. The bit of plastic visible under his tail is there to keep it from drooping down in contact with the base. Once the glue is dried that will come out and leave a small gap there.

Oh, and the big boss man's feeling less impotent now that he's got little boss man back.
