I agree.
You know, I wonder what some of the more modern stuff would look like with the paint scheme..

LOL! Thanks Ghoma... that helps. I was feeling rather old and out-of-touch there... Like your house rules... might do the same thing with our cats (we have two that frequent the table). Darwin in the photo and his sister, Spook... while Spook is very dainty... she's just about as clumsy as her moose of a brother... so S8 hits should abound.
As soon as Thing 1 starts painting, I'll post his progress. I'll post Thing 2's normally, but I want to illustrate a point so for this one model I'll wait until he's finished.

Have your sons ever played in a tournament?
I think it would be great experience for the older of two.
You learn so much about tactics and the rules and list building.
Also it would be great to see a list off models in the doom eagle army.

It's been a very long time since I've posted anything so I thought I'd give a quick update. Summer is here in full swing and the boys are doing summer things... camp, scouts, fishing, playing/learning how to play catch, etc. They haven't made any progress on painting though Thing 1 is still working on assembling Calgar and Co. from time to time. I haven't pushed them, they're boys, it's summer.... nuff said. Time enough for painting later on. That being said, they haven't stopped gaming. Both are going to our FLGS on Friday night to participate in the weekly "Young Bloods" game they put on the the kids... so rather than being able to work on my poor, neglected Mantis Warriors... the progress on which has been painfully slow as of late... I'm scrambling to patch the holes in 2, 2000 pt apocalypse Space Marine armies, one Doom Eagle, one Mantis Warrior... because the little rats refuse to work together playing one army. Tossed together two tactcials and two terminators tonight to finish off Mantis squads for Thing 2, then hit them with green primer & wash so they look like they belong with the rest. I'm not concerned about them looking painted really, just want to make sure they get back to the right house after the game. Funny part is that these figs aren't even destined to be Mantis Warriors... they're supposed to wind up as Doom Eagles... but since Thing 2 is running mostly my old MW marines, I've having to paint them green for Friday, only to have to strip them some time later so they can be re-painted into their final color scheme! Crazy.
OH, and I have to put a land raider together for them w/ base paint tomorrow... jeez!
That's all for now. Promise more when there's more to report.
GS
@ChocolateGork: Thing 1 has... it went rather badly. There were rule issues, leave it at that. I can come up with a list... it's pretty big as most of the figs are hand-me-downs from my quite sizable space marine army... well, not so much after I gave most of it away... but you get the idea.

Geez, it would seem as though they were somehow cunningly manipulating you into painting all of their-- Nah.
On a serious note, however, why do they refuse to work together with one army? does this have anything to do with why they were fighting so much? Or is it just sibling rivalry?

I think it's mostly that the older one, who knows the rules reasonably well, wants the freedom to be able to play his peers without being saddled with his little brother. The little one is amazingly adept at the game, but he can't read yet (getting there... but not there yet), so he still needs someone to read/interpret most of the rules for him. The store's got older boys that help run the game, so they can usually marshal the little ones along. The basic game mechanics he's got... just needs help with the million little picky rules this stupid game is riddled with.
And yes, there's healthy sibling rivalry mixed in there too.
For tomorrow... here are their armies:
Thing 1:
HQ: headless Marnius Calgar
HQ: Librarian in terminator armor, force dome, gate
Elite: Terminators (10), 2xhvy flmr
Elite: Techmarine, servo arm, servitor
Troops: Tac Squad (10), flmr + ML
Troops: Scouts (5), ML, PF on srgt
FA: Attack Bike Squad (2 bikes), MM
Hvy: Pred w/ autocannon turrett & LCs on sides
Hvy: Baneblade (yeah I know, it don't go here... but they play pretty fast and loose with the rules)
Cost: 1550 + baneblade
Thing 2:
HQ: Captain in termie armor with extras
HQ: Chaplain in termie armor, standard
Elite: Terminators (5) w/ CML + 2 chain fists, Land Raider (standard)
Elite: Assault Terminators with 2 TH/SS, Land Raider Redeemer
Troops: Tac Squad (10), ML, flamer, srg w/ PW, rhino
Troops: Tac Squad (10), LC, flamer, srg w/PF, rhino
Hvy: Vindicator
Hvy: Whirlwind
Cost: 2000
I think Thing 2's list kicks.... cant believe all that only cost 2k.
If you're wondering as to the odd configuration or the units or lists... it's what they have painted so we go with it.

1's list is kinda....odd. Especally with the Baneblade.
2's list is pretty good, but Id use a crusaider instead of the redeemer, so he can put both his HQs with em.

Unfortunately the redeemer is all we've got, so we've got the chaplain with the assault termies and the captain with the regular ones.
Thing 1 is stuck on "big tanks"... so he likes to trot out the baneblade. Never played it myself. Shoots big pie-plates... guess he's happy so who am I to shoot holes in it?
Thing 2's list is decent... I'd tweak it a bit if I had the time/figures & energy... but it'll do for now. It's bed time.

Hey Git! It's great to see that the kids are still enjoying the hobby, that pic with the cat really cracked me up. My cats try and eat the minis if I leave them out lol. Yes boys will be boys now that it is summer, I have lots of stuff I like to do outdoors and don't spend as much time with the hobby as I would like. Anyway, keep up the great work and wish the things well for me. Looking forward to seeing more

I'd like to report a successful night of gaming for all. The boys took their armies and duked it out with another couple of kids, even though Thing 2's side lost pretty badly (he partner was running demos and suffered two catastrophic deep-striking mishaps), he never game up or got discouraged. I drew in my little game against SOB & learned some valuable things about my army. Just spent an hour tweaking the list and I think I'm on to something. Hope I get a chance to try it out.

Unfortunately no, we were all doing our own thing in different parts of the store. As I'm sure you know, it takes a lot of effort to pull off a decent battle report and we all just needed a chance to relax and game.
I did finish up the Marneus Calgar conversion for Thing 1 yesterday. Just a new head, but he likes the look of it. So there should be WIP shots of that fairly soon.

I've been enjoying this blog immensely. It's always great to see families gaming together. That being said, I hate to rain on a parade, but a standard Codex: Space Marines force can only have 5 Land Raiders (if memory serves). You can only have 1 of each type of Terminator unit take an LR as a dedicated transport (so, 2 for your Elite slots) and 3 for your heavies.
Now, if we're talking Codex: Black Templars, you can have... 14... I think.
