favorite to least fave:
death korps. They fear no-one and beat up anything through weight of numbers, never falling back.
steel legion. Gas-masks, trench-coats and glove-wearing men who are beating back the largest waagh! Ever.
Tanith. Only one regiment strong, they can kill anything and are IG ninjas.
Elysian. They fly in through gunships and are the 40k equivalent of the SAS.
catachan. Tough meatheads, all mini-rambo's.
praetorians. Jolly good posh chaps. Good show. Just such a contrast with all the other IG.
Valhallans. Neutral either way.
Mordian. too posh.
Cadians. Just so boring and plain.

So Mordians are too posh but Praetorians have just the right amount of posh?

Catachans, definitely. Any military to give rise to Colonel Straken is best in my book. Dude survived his planet getting virus bombed by chaos, and then strangled the Chaos Lord to death with a root. I love jungle fighters.

When you think about it, how long would you have to strangle a chaos lord for before he died?

While the cadian looks is quite boring what they are is badass. They've beaten back Abbadon not once but 12 times before finally giving some ground the 13th time he tried it. The sheer balls to stand before all the horrors of the warp and give as good as you get is awesome.

Well! here's my personal takes of Bad Ass Imperial Guardsmen(by their regiments):

  • Cadian Shock Troops: what's makes this regiment widely regarded as the best Human warriors next to Space Marines themselves is: their Kasrkins(where speaking of power levels, Halo Spartans are surprisingly on par with Cadian Kasrkin instead Space Marines because Space Marines are surprisingly can makes Halo Spartans looks like Paintball Player) and their training are superior to today's armies: it started before you can walk

Catachan Jungle Fighters: those guys can makes Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarznegger, Duke Nukem, and the like looks like Justin Bieber because of the gravity of their home planet is twice of the earth and everything on their world is trying to kill you literally. and higher gravity gives them Near-Superhuman strength that makes them decent CC Fighters and their swords: ones with it's blade have it's core half-filled with mercury makes them hit harder than most other Imperial Guardsmen in CC and so far, they are only Imperial Guard regiment that has receives their own Codex like some Space Marine individual chapters

Valhallan Ice Warriors: they have stronger morale: when the enemies plows their ways through Imperial Guardsmen of this regiment, they are often won't retreats, so they requires less commissar executions.

Tallarn Desert Raiders: they are basically space Arabs where Guardsmen from this Regiment are sometimes armed with Suicide bombs, so when Orks are chopping Tallarn Guardsmen, expect they are blows up in Ork's faces

Mordian Iron Guard: their fighting style is retro IMO

Praetorian Guard: Similar to Mordians, except the culture of their home planet are just like Victorian-era England

Armaggedon Steel Legion and Death Korps of Krieg: Imperial Guardsmen from these regiments has Gasmasks that provides them special rule unique to their regiments: immunity to poison weapons, and in Death Korps of Krieg case: they are very fond of Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical weaponry

Tanith 1st and Only: they are basically half-ninjas and half Irish

Elysian Drop troopers: looks more futuristic

Vostroyan Firstborn: Imperial Guardsmen from this regiment are wears Carapace Armor(which obviously too tough to be called T-Shirts by 40k Fandom) in place of Flak Armor

Savlar Chem Dogs: think about Imperial Guard regiment similar to them, except it's drugs are anything that contain Sugar

  • and there's countless more Imperial Guard regiments that comes in their own distinct themes, models, and tactics. but too bad, so many IG regiments other than well known ones are discontinued and to make this worse, those Bad Ass Imperial Guardsmen from aforementioned regiments are outnumbered by Imperial Guardsmen that simply being able-bodied Men and Women that simply dressed with Cadian Flak Armor and military training that just like today. at least Imperial Guardsmen from aforementioned regiment are still more numerous than Space Marines.

Tallarn all the way, although you probably could have seen that from my avatar Many reasons, including the elite Tallarn tank regiments... biggest tank battle in history anyone?

(although for the record Masonicon, I've never heard of any Tallarn being suicide bombers. They're based on the bedouin Arab uprisings during WW1 and the British SAS in the desert in WW2, not modern day insurgents... and anyways they were dreamt up by Rick Priestly way before 9-11. I really dislike making that comparision, for obvious reasons... let's say no more of it..)

I've never heard of Tallarn suicide bombers either. Tallarns are supposed to be Space Lawrence of Arabia Arabians from what I understand.

Personally I prefer the Valhallans the most. Soviet Union in space Str0NG!!!!!

For this whole "entirely militarized" thing, most IG Regiments aren't Cadians/Catachans/Krieg or whatever. The most well-known IG regiments (Cadians, Mordians, Krieg, Valhallans, Vostroya, Elysians, Catachan, Armageddon, Tallarn) are also the most capable in the entire Guard and these planets pay vastly disproportionate Guard tithes to the Imperium and have far larger men in the Guard then 99% of most planets, mostly out of necessity (Cadia, Mordia, Armageddon), redemption (Krieg, Vostroya), or just out of their own choice and speciality (Catachan). Most planets don't militarize their entire population for the Guard or PDF and most aren't as elite as the most-seen Regiments in fluff. Your average Guardsmen is probably from some unnamed Hive World and isn't anything special.

Dude, Mordians are hardcore. Do you know what they did when their planet got attacked by the legions of Chaos?

I think it's because their spiffy uniforms that they are even more badass in that they are still holding the line despite not even wearing proper body armour. Actually, I'd say Iron Guard is the most line-holding Regiment of them all.

Very tricky to choose a favorite from this list, though. There's so many that would have really earned the title. Iron Guard, Catachans, Valhallans (minefields? what minefields? SEND IN THE TROOPS)

On a semi-related note, Yarrick is the most badass man in the Guard. He was headbutted by Ghazghkull. He got back up.

I should read up on them, I might end up liking them as much as I like Mordians. They just got the same kind of style bonus.

I totally agree about Yarrick but I have to say that steel legions my favorite regiment.

The meaning of victory is not merely to defeat your enemy but destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavors, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory.
