Now this is perhaps just my own personal rant but it always seems to me that if GW threw an extra pair of legs or two into their sets, then we would be able to get so much more out of them. Take this for example;
DA Veterans- makes five models
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1060236
DA 'upgrade pack' Makes three veterans but all it needs is another two legs? *NOTE* I thought that I would also mention that GW is selling the same pack on their website for $30 instead of $16. Just a heads-up for those DA players.
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440160a&prodId=prod900140a
Now I know it could all be to do with the way the sprues are arranged and all that but it does seem a little strange to me. Opinions?

DA upgrade pack makes TEN marines
(The pic only shows the unique parts)
Edit: seems like they changed it. Now you only get enough to make five, or at least thats what the 'one upgrade frame' seems to be saying.

The upgrade pack or the Veteran pack? I bought the upgrade pack and got 5 sets of legs (the set has been revised since that though)

Interesting find with the bits. If GW threw in any extra stuff it would be amazing. (NECRONS)

Devastators and Command Squads come with an extra pair of legs, I believe.

Yeah, it's not just space marines that have a leg shortage, orks do too! Been buying bitz on ebay and legs always fetch a good price. I guess GWs viewpoint is the extra bitz on a sprue are just for variety/conversions, and not meant to be built into complete figures, pity though.

It's everything, you always have more bodies than legs. However, since I'm making a biker space marine force, I have some extra legs floating around for once!
Nevermind, used already ahahah.

yes they changed it. A month or so ago I got in on the end of the 2 sprues for $20 set. Glad I got them when I did.

That's the point.
Legs are always the hardest things to get from Bitz sites because everyone ends up with spare torsos, heads, arms and so on.

I believe with assault squad boxes, you can make 10 marines, except for the legs, or something like that from a tac squad box. Legs are the rarest, this is done intentionally, so that you get lots of variation and customization while still only getting the 5 models total.

I suppose GW would not be able to call their models customizable if you had to use every set of torsos, legs and heads.
Maybe GW should sell a legs bitz pack? I am sure there would be a lot of people who would gladly buy them if they were a reasonable price.

Well, think about it, what would you rather sell;
A pack of 5 legs for £8/£10 or a full set of space marine tactical marines coming to over £20.

Ah yes, but for those of us who already own all the other parts needed to make 5 marine apart from the legs, then you are saving yourself £££ on the cost of getting a complete set.

But your gain is GW's loss, Cain.
I'm slow to defend GW, but they want a pack of 10 models to make ten models. By setting one model part as the limiting factor, then they maintain this, whilst giving us all the chance to keep a decent bit box.
If they put in enough parts for 12 models, it would be a 12 model set. We'd all club together online and swap parts.
That said, you can still eke more expensive models out of cheaper box sets. You can get 8 long fangs out of 1 devastator box if you use the parts from normal SWs. Similarly, with a bit of knife work, a box of lootas and a box of normal boyz, you can get five burnas and four lootas (and a few boyz left).
Similarly, the old metal models often needed plastic arms and legs. It's easy to update old minis with spare parts now, which is good for modellers and arguably doesn't hurt GW.

Very true, it is always nice to have plenty of spare parts. And like nurglich said, there are some sets that come with spare legs and there are bitz shops out there that do sell legs, they just tend to be in short supply most of the time.

The DA Veterans Box has enough to create five marines( Sprue one and Sprue two), and also includes the special weapons sprue. While the Upgrade pack includes Sprue one and Sprue two. They used to sell the Upgrade pack with two of each sprue(no special weapons, but enough to make 10 marines) for the same price as the Veterans. This was a fairly recent change, as I ordered the Upgrade Pack at the end of November / Beginning of December, and got enough for 10 marines.

Dang, they caught on to what a good deal they were! Ah... well, at least got as many as I needed for my list... the other 4 tacs I'd hoped were going to be cheap, but now they've gone and done that. Bah.

Something else to consider is that you can get sets of Space Marine legs for cheap from bits stores online and especially ebay. A month or so ago I managed to win an auction for five MkVI Power Armour legs for $1. Look for Dune Sea on ebay.au.
