My long time Warhammer buddy is getting married this year and thinking he might be in need of a bit of extra cash (for the unmarried amongst you, weddings are bloody expensive. It's the feeding of a 100 people you haven't seen for ages and probably won't see again), I suggested that his mint condition copy of Warhammer Quest would fetch a pretty penny on ebay.

Anyway, we went to see True Grit the other night (pretty good, but not good enough for a Best Picture Oscar IMO) and after the film he produced Warhammer Quest from the boot of his car and asked me if I wanted it. It was "cluttering up" his parents loft you see. I protested like mad and said he should sell it or get me to sell it for him. He shrugged and said I could do what I wanted with it. I assured him that if I did sell it, I'd give him the money.

But then I went home and opened the box and was hit with a pure wave of nostalgia. Now most of the minis have dated badly (save the four main characters which wouldn't look out of place in any Warhammer army), but it's the genius simplicity of the game that really strikes me. Played without a games master (or even other players), you simply take 12 dungeon cards and shuffle the objective room into the last 6. Each time you leave a board section, you turn over a card which reveals the next part of the dungeon, be it corridor, t-junction or room. A room triggers an event of some sort, which normally consists of being attacked by a horde of monsters or a swarm of creepy crawlies, but also included traps, cave-ins and the like. If you make it to the (gorgeously detailed) objective room, it's time for one last fight with a big beastie of some sort, before heading home to spend your well earned gold.

Now I really should sell this and pass the money onto my friend, but there's a really strong urge to play a few games and paint the minis (which with my painting ability would knock 90% off the value). So, after mulling it over I've hit upon a solution. I've decided to recreate the game with current Warhammer minis, make my own board sections and cards before scanning the rules into PDFs (for my own use only GW ). Then, I feel I could comfortably part company with the treasures that you see below and my friend would get the money.

Sound fair?

How I hate you.

I only wanted the Heroes. I never recovered from my brother accidentally breaking my barbarian.

But it's nice that you'd help your buddy like that!

Oooooh....

I can see the beloved dwarf model that was the leader of my first Dwarf army ever! Ah, nostalgia. That model was one of the best dwarf minis from GW for the longest time, in my opinion.

Lucky find dude!

Are those the old 4th edition goblin spear and bowmen?vI see what looks like orcs with bows there as well. What are the hunched things in the middle? And the slightly bigger things at the back?

Nice one though. I'd love my own copy of WHQ.

Minotaurs in the back, I'm pretty sure. Maybe skaven in front of them?

Yep, minos at the back, skaven in the middle.

The creepy crawlies (snotlings, bats and spiders) are in the box out of shot.

I'm thinking to myself "You know Da Boss, you could recreate this set, miniature wise, pretty easily. With lovely multipart plastics. You could. It'd be an excuse to buy and paint those clanrats you love so much. And a box of plastic minotaurs. You've got Dwarves and Orcs a plenty, and you've always wanted a crack at the empire wizard set. You could even go buy those dungeon tiles you wanted. from the comic shop."
Damn it! I don't need another project !

I have two full sets, plus every add-on I could get my hands on, back when acquiring them didn't require me to sell a kidney on the open market. I feel for you.

Now, as a side note, the 'advanced rules' covered miniatures not in that box set (it WAS designed to sell minis, after all!) and the new ranges are perfectly compatible. So, if you were to run a campaign, you'd have to 'roll your own', anyways!

Me? I'd keep it, and buy or do something for my friend, something nice and unexpected in exchange.

My $0.02

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Ah thats a great find!

I always thought this was a wonderful game, and so well designed. I was kind of hoping that GW's 'mystery box' of last year was going to be a revamp of something like this, shame that nothing ever surfaced!

Sell it.

I would.

Then again, fantasy isn't my 'bag'. I just never got into it.

I love that game. I bought the Dwarf Troll Slayer after the first game we played. The characters that come with the game are fine, I just wanted to add some flair! Anyways, have fun with that game, that was pretty cool of your friend. Congratz to him as well for taking the plunge.

I was surprised at how old it is. GW's advertising leaflet is still in the box and is promoting 40K 2nd Edition and Space Marine (the precursor to Epic 40K). Happy memories

Back in the days where GW really cross-promoted their minis lines, and made many games that pushed sales, as well as created low-cost entry points into the hobby.

*sigh*

I think that's a great idea (might look around to doing it myself as far as the copying then selling). Someone from a gaming group we visited a couple of times gave us their version too. It's only missing the orcs. It is pretty fun to play.
