I wanna make some cadian "rough riders," 'scept they're actually just wearing jump packs. Mainly because jetpacks > bikes.

Has anyone ever made something similar? I'd like some advice on making some. I'd love to see some photos too.

Thanks guys.

They're pretty massive for guard. I've seen them before though, they look pretty good.

I suggest they need to be vaguely cavalry-sized to avoid endless TLOS arguments.

I'd go for some sort of large exoskeleton with a lo-tech jump pack on the back, looking like some local battlefield modification/experiment. (Hmm, Ork jumppacks might be suitable.) Exoskeletons could be hard to make though.

Have you considered hoverbikes instead - i.e. jumppacks you sit on

hmm, i might try using the basic space marine power plant/backpack and modifying it a bit. Principally it would be about the same in terms of scale for what it has to move weight-wise to the space marine jump pack. I agree with the TLOS issue though, as well as the base size. You might have to go for hover-bikes instead. Maybe eldar jet-bikes without the cover/housing? My mate did an aptly themed army waaaaayyyyyyyyyy back when, and the eldar bikes less their canopy/cover were awesome for the job of hover-bikes.

Even something as simple as a regular marine backpack with the two vents cut off and a a couple short lengths of plastic rod added to sides to represent thrusters might work...

They're going to be elevated from the base, so I don't think tlos will be too much of a problem.

Those hasslefree ones look sick. I may try them if nothing better comes up.

my advice would be to scrounge up some starship trooper jetpacks and mount them on cavalry bases (with the base parallel to the axis of the jump pack, not pointing from the front to the back of the body of the trooper). you'd have a cool unit and also be legal in the sense that they're using the correct base for the unit they're replacing.

The rarefied atmosphere

The hassle free ones always come up in this kind of discussion but they are built for a squat like figure size, I have never seen them on anything larger. Maybe more like a grav chute?

Have the sanguinary guard jump packs been considered? Without the wings they are effectively half the size of a normal jump pack. Not very creative though.

The flamer pack would be cool if you were looking for a rocketeer motif.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

vehicle stormbolter, flip it so its facing up, chop the barrels, glue smoke launchers to bottom, glue imperial eagle to back, the front sights fit around the curve of the models backpack.

the "wings" are just the stormbolter ammo drums, but thats why they are jump packs, they just sort of guide your fall

I wouldn't've guessed it'd be that easy. Oddly enough though, it's really effective.

Exoskeletons are indeed fiddly, but I think they are worth it. I don't like the idea of jump packs for rough riders as they are supposed to be cavalry rather than jump infantry. The Starship trooper ones look a bit better as they look like they are designed for sustained gliding rather than quick bursts of altitude. Just a personal thing though. Look forward to seeing the preferred option take shape

Trouble is, I'm a better painter than i am modeller. I like to keep it simple, generally. Luckily, there are a lot of simple yet effective ways of modelling almost everything, so i'm lucky =)

I just noticed the hoverboard idea... Definitely gonna try it, at least.

Have you considered the Grav-chutes from FW?

I have, but I find they're too small, unfortunately. Even for guard.

Wow, this actually works really well. Thanks for your input, Grundz =)

Great thing is, I've got ridiculous amounts of this kinda stuff just lying around my room.

Keeping my options open however, just in case =P

I just recalled a jumppack I'd made. This can work if you have many many many many parts kicking around to slaughter. It depends on whether or not you keep multilasers kicking around.

Cut the vanes off of the Space marine back-pack, and mount them on the back/bottom facing down. Then take multi-laser barrells and cut them down and place them where the vanes were. Las-cannons might work too, but i understand theres a bit of a market/demand for those things.

Another alternative is to replicate the sisters of battle jump-packs using the space marine back-packs as a base. It all depends on the look you are going for though, pretty, ugly or practical?
