First off, yes I am a Tau player (Gosh, I love stereotypes! They're so TRUE!! )

Growing up in the mid 90s and being exposed to the initial anime-invasion of Toonami I was infatuated by these awesome action-based cartoons. I love animation of any kind, and I love action-packed entertainment as well. 80s - 90s America had it's fair share of action oriented cartoons, (Most of them I missed out on being that I was born in 91) but today it seems that the only thing American animators want to make are unfunny, brainless cartoon sitcoms. After Adult Swim had stopped airing things like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun I pretty much stopped watching anime. I watched one episode of Naruto (God help me) and wanted to punch small kittens. I felt like I gave up 23 minutes of my time with nothing in return, just a dull plot and gak tons of filler. Same story with Bleach. And of course Gundam series #1,000,000 was airing and still unable to top Gundam Wing.

However recently I have gotten back into it all because of one series: Black Lagoon. The characters were memorable, the development was great and actually made sense (not this "obnoxious teenager becomes a god and saves the world" type nonsense) Even the dialogue was great! I just wish I could find more series that don't make me want to harm innocent kittens because of their nonsense plot and hate-able characters.

What I look for:
Good amount of action
Reasonable character development (I hate deus ex machina type endings, it's such a weak way to end a series)
Characters that can be related to, and generally liked.

What I absolutely HATE!!! (RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE!!!!)
Overly obnoxious, cute characters that serve no purpose
Whiny teenagers as the protagonist
A character that spends all of his/her time bitching about how everything is so hard (cry me a fething river!!)
Terrible attempts to fit in a romance story in places it doesn't belong. As in it serves no purpose to the plot, completely unnecessary, becomes distracting.

Oh, and how could I forget my most favoritest thing ever! GIANT fething ROBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTS!!!!

What are your thoughts on anime (please try to be constructive. "Gay" is not a constructive response.)

Maybe you hang out with immature women. Maybe you're attracted to immature women because you think they'll let you shpadoink them.

Watch shows from the early nineties or before. (with a few exceptions)

I recommend original Gundam, some of the other robot shows from the 80s like L-Gaim or Panzer World Galient; the former is a more 'Star Wars/Dune' type showing, the latter is set on a Medieval human colony planet but unearthing technology from the advanced past.

I absolutely loved Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

The only thing it checks on your bad list is that Winry Rockbell is a little bit useless.

But really, fantastic anime. Also, Death Note is great.

Death Note????

OP, I suggest you skip it unless you like logic-based everything. And whiney characters.

Fafnir's big list of quality Japanese animation to check out:

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

Noein: To Your Other Self

Ergo Proxy

Witch Hunter Robin

Cowboy Bebop (make sure you watch the English dub, it's vastly superior!)

Visions of Escaflowne

Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket

Ghost in the Shell (movie)

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie)

Akira (movie)

They get really whiney around the end in that one. I'd suggest skipping the ending of it and reading the manga version, it's a bit better.

OP I felt the same way after an ep of Naruto.

For Gundam, skip 00 and all of Seed. Not because they're bad (Seed Destiny is very very much so ), but because they hit a few of the things you said you hated. I'd say watch 08th Mobile Suit team, the original (which was already suggested, Amuro is whiney as well, but it's funny). Maybe give Zeta and ZZ a try though.

Also try Black Cat and Kuroshitsuji. There's a couple more I'd suggest but I don't really remember them at the moment because I haven't watched any for a while (with the exception of High School of the Dead). Damn study.

I'm a big Axis Powers Hetalia fan/cosplayer, and I have to say, I don't get why people generalize anime as if its a genre in and of itself. Anime/Manga, are mediums with genres inside them. Saying you like or hate it is the same as saying you like/hate 'television' or 'movies'....it's just too general a category to really make blanket discussions.

Sorry, just my. 02 cents/berserk button. I also recommend you don't watch Hetalia, as you'll hate it...definitely deoesn't sound like your type of show, OP.

It's alright, the ending was very weird. Then again the entire show was.

Oh, and watch Level E. IMO one of the best shows in the last 5 years, if not longer.

As a robot fan who doesn't like 'whiny' characters, check out older robot shows for sure. Especially L-Gaim.

Full Metal Alchemist is one of the best.

Naruto had its moments but in recent years they have really made it a point to make one show last a few months. It drags out so much now that it isn't worth watching.

Make sure you watch the OVAs. Significantly better than the series and much more true to the comics (which are awesome, by the way).

If you're a fan of more mature anime (violence, gore, sex, and actual storyline), I recommend Berserk and Gantz.

The constant theme of "I was raped at a young age" in Berserk was starting to worry me.

Wait no Robotech, not even the original Macross? What are you some sort of Godless Commie Pinko? They invented angry robot suits and bombarding the planet from orbit for crying out loud!

I loved both the movie and series of Ghost in the Shell. Great stuff. And I also freakin' love Tachikomas! Which is my only exception to overly-cute characters. Something about big spider-tank robots that act and sound like a 5 year old girl makes me giggle.

QFT, Macross is another good one from the old days

I only really loved the movies (...loved would be an understatement, they're both some of my favourite movies of all time, I rank them up their with Bladerunner and Control), the series never really did anything for me.

Big O, the animation is very different from most anime, similar to Batman the Series. It is like a detective series and has Giant Robots. Also while not Japanese, the classic Johnny Quest is always a good watch.

There's also Bubblegum Crisis (Original series only!) for a cyberpunk power-armour type affair.

I think the only Anime's I can really recommend are:

Original season of Robotech ONLY. You know, the one with Rick Hunter.

Full Metal Alchemist. I've heard that Brotherhood is closer to the Mangos, but I just preferthe first series more.

Hellsing. I honestly have a toss up about OVA/Normal, though. I like the style and story of Normal, though the Art is much better OVA. And before I get flamed about OVA being closer to the Mango; It's about Vampires vs Nazi (Yawn) Werewolves (Double Yawn), and it has all sorts of that japanese "OH MAH GAWD OH MAH GAWD OH MAH GAWD" scenes where people suddenly develope wavy arms and wierd faces.....

Having said that, that merc dude with the ponytail is pretty cool.

I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.

I'll put in a second vote for Escaflowne, it does have OTT romance in it, but it's central to the plot.

Also, Full Metal Panic and Full Metal Panic Fumoffu (the second is a spoof version, but trust me, it's ridiculously wonderful).

Patlabor is reasonably good, if you like mecha and no-nonsense plots. Appleseed likewise.

I also like Seven Kingdoms, what I've seen of it. No mecha, complex plot, dunno if it'll get finished, but it's pretty great.
