OK so here's the thing; the AoBR set gets you started with both marines and orks. I have been a marine fan for more than 20 years, so getting a rulebook and the core of a new marine force was well worth it for me, but what to do with all these orks? Well it turns out that Mrs Doggles loves the unruly greenskins - so now I am tasked with getting them painted up to a reasonable standard (because there ain't gonna be no games with unpainted minis in our house, no sir!)

So here we go - here are some pics of the beginnings of an ork army for the rather marvellous lady who agreed that I could deck out a whole room of our house with a 6 ft game board, display cabinets... the works. Hope you like them - any hints and tips gratefully accepted as ever. Suggestions for good units that would be worth adding would be nice (at the moment she has just the AoBR orks, and old warbuggy and a shokk attack gun)

My marines are here by the way: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/350279.page#2502419

...and the obligatory blog is here: http://weekend-painter.blogspot.com/

More to follow when I get them painted!

Looks good, I can also see that your significant other likes bad moonz, expensive tastes lol

Only suggestions I can make are to add a bit of zest to the main body of the shokk attak gun, maybe paint one or two of the parts yellow/black etc (i.e. not silver) just to break up the large areas of gunmetal?

Otherwise, that is some good paintwork!

Thanks Leigen_Zero - good point with the S.A. gun - I found this one such an onerous task to complete that I just blobbed gunmetal all over the place to get it finished - however dropping a few areas of yellow and black on there to break it up should be easy enough to do now - maybe some check patterns perhaps for that industrial look - hmmmmmm

The Bad Moon scheme came about after her liking an army that one of the guys in Chester GW store had done - his conversion work was fantastic and it struck me that the yellow was eyecatching and pulled it all together nicely. If I can get some way towards that kind of look for this army then I'll be doing well I think.

That is awesome... I have been trying to get my wife into the hobby for ages... but the only army she has shown any interest in is SoB which with all of the all metal models i just can't afford right now... Hopefully one day i'll be lucky too and my wife will like an all/mostly plastic army.

Anyways the paint looks great... keep up the great work, it's worth it if the Mrs. is happy.

where am I? *looks around* Well i'm...errr...I...I...don't know!

now, although i can see painting something as a gift can be nice but isn't most of the idea to make and paint your own models before taking them to the field of battle?

ON a side note. The painting is glorious!

Why are the good ones always taken?

The Orks look fabulous! I'm a huge Ork fan. If my Orks were half this nice...ah wonderful work. I would love to see more. May I suggest Stormboyz? Or perhaps some Burnas and Lootas?

Thanks for all the comments guys - just finished one of the 'copters so I'll get that on here next (when I'm not at work...)

@Imperial Monkey - that's how I like to approach the hobby, but she seems much more interested in the games rather than the modelling side of things (she's recently been murdering me at Space Hulk quite comprehensively). She's quite arty/crafty though, so maybe if I can just get her to paint one then she'll get the bug, you never know...

Nice one - just had a look at the GW site and I think the next addition might well be Stormboyz, the models for these look fantastic. Also I guess she's a little light on vehicles at the moment (my marines have a speeder, a whirlwind, and are just about to get a land raider, so it's a bit one-sided) - what's best, bikes or a trukk perhaps?

Didn't you get some Deffkoptas with the AoBR set? Personally I like bikes better. But if you don't have Deffkoptas, find some. They're what made me win the one and only game I've ever won (out of a total 3 played, but w/e).

Here you go Bunny - Deffkoptas are currently underway:

Mrs Doggles was browsing the GW full orks list last night and picked out bikes as a particular favourite, so they're on the wishlist now. Apparently the Stompa is "hilarious" too, so it looks like I'll have my work cut out there.

The paintjob on those orks is fantastic. Your yellows are very nice and the ork skin is amazing. My only advice is drill your barrels out. It will make the model look a lot better and it doesnt take very long. Other than that though keep up the excellent work

Mrs Doggles' ork on the left, mine on the right - the fact that I have to point that out says a lot about how proud I am of her first ever attempt

I'll show her your comment by way of encouragement - thanks! - I was so pleased that it worked out well because now she wants to do another one... 'and so it begins...' ha ha

Killa Kans for me next (half way through the first one now after leaving it sitting on the painting table for ages) but I think we'll pick up some of new-style ork boyz for her to have a go with in the mean time.

Staying on target.....

Now my lady likes the painting so maybe I convince her on the 6ft board.........

That's very very good for a first go, well done Mrs Doggles! It's amazing what the ladies turn out first time round, my girlfriend painted a swooping hawk as her first and she is soooooooooo flipping neat! It took me 5 years to get to that point! lol

Some outstanding painting all round sir, she's a lucky lady

Thanks chaps - I'm learning to love yellow because it's teaching me a lesson in patience (and especially about diluting the paint properly)... a bit like the white on my marines - good grief I'm a glutton for punishment :-)

BC-Scotti - we're very lucky to share the hobby with our other halves. I don't think it's something that Mrs Doggles would have ever encountered without me, but fair play to her, she's having a real good go at it and was surprised at how much she enjoyed the painting particularly. Get that 6ft board bought mate!
