You could start by getting 2 Daemon Princes with Lash of Submission and 9 Obliterators, and nothing but Plague Marines in Rhinos as troops...but that's only if you don't want anyone to play with you more than one game, lol.

Right.

There are two other types of CSM armiest that work:
MC heavy army with DPs, GD, Dreads, Defilers, and Daemons.
Rhino spam army with Chosen, CSM, and Havocs in Rhinos, armed with special weapons.

oh god no I hope that was in irony..

want my advice? well i don't care your getting it anyways!

expirement! see what works for you best! I for instance run a fusion of troop spam and chaozilla, where as most of the time my HQ's are a IC or DP, dreds w/ missle launchers, 4-6 10 man CSM squads, 3 defilers or 2 and 3 oblits, so many scary targets the enemy spreads thier shots too thin. If i have the points i throw down a SGD too, not vdery good but he is a good distraction.

You could even run the MC list, except run Obliterators instead of Defilers. If you've ever had to play against Oblits, you know they're a huge pain in the ass to deal with. And with the anti-AV metagame, it works out in your favor. Plus, then you can make the 2 Daemon Princes into Lash Princes, and really ruin someone's day. Of course, this all gets kinda expensive...points and money wise...

Another army tactic used by the CSM, although not quite as effective as the others posted, is the Daemonbomb. More for lulz than actually winning, you take 3 squads of bikes with icons, 2 squads of CSM in rhinos with icons, and dump the rest of your points into a Greater Daemon and Summoned Daemons. It's actually pretty good in objective games, but if you roll Kill Points for missions, you can save yourself some time and forfeit.

Can you post a list of all the models you currently own? That way we would know what you have to work with, and can help you figure out the best way to run it, rather than throw you a bunch of suggestions you can't even use.

It's the chaos flow chat, it's super easy to make a list for chaos, just follow these simple and easy to use instructions:

2 Lash (I prefer sorcerers since you can hide them easier, but its up to you)
9 Oblits (6 is good if you are under 1k points)
As many plague marines in rhinos as it takes to get you to you point limit

You can even take it to 'Ard Boys, since it caps out at about 3k points.

Saddest thing is I'm not even kidding

They seriously need to put the 0-1 limit back on Oblits...and this is coming from a CSM player...I really don't like spamming them. I usually only run like 2 in my games...but they are so so good. :( They just make your army look so stupid though...and while we're at it, a 0-1 Daemon Prince would feel right too, as I don't really think that if there were two DPs in an army, that one would ever listen to the other. I can fully see a Chaos Lord or Sorcerer following the commands of a Daemon Prince, but one Daemon Prince listening to another? Just to become a Daemon Prince, you have to be a ruthless individual that will stop at nothing to gain more power. Then again, I'm allowed to put a Tzeentch sorcerer into a rhino with Khorne berzerkers, so...my point is, CSM's flavor got raped. :(

So even though I may suggest cheese lists, it's not really something you HAVE to do. I still win 3/4 of all games I play, and I run some of the most badmouthed units in the codex. Just try to keep things cheap, and with a purpose in mind. Don't make like 10 man squads with a Lascannon and a Flamer...give each of your units a specialized role. An example would be like a squad of Chosen with 5 meltaguns that outflank. Obviously, this squad will kill any tank near it when in comes in off reserve. Outflank is risky, but since 2/3 of the time it works out in your favor, I personally love it, because when it works, it REALLY works. That 5 meltagun squad I talked about? I used one against an IG player using a squad of 3 basilisks. The turn it came in, all 3 died. Good stuff. So you don't always have to take the easy way out and run DP/Oblit/Plague Marines, you can still easily win without them. A list I played recently, for example:
1850
Daemon Prince -155
Wings / Mark of Slaanesh / Lash of Submission
Sorcerer - 125
Mark of Slaanesh / Lash of Submission
Greater Daemon -100
Chaos Chosen x5 -150
5x Meltagun / Icon of Chaos Glory
Chaos Dreadnought -110
Twin-Linked Autocannon
Chaos Dreadnought -105
Twin-Linked Heavy Bolter
Chaos Space Marines x10 -215
2x Meltagun / Icon of Chaos Glory / Champion
Khorne Berzerkers -279
Power Fist / Champion / Icon
Summoned Daemons x7 -91
Bikers x5 -195
2x Meltagun / Icon of Chaos Glory
Obliterator Cult x2 -150
Chaos Havocs x5 -165
4x Autcannon / Icon of Chaos Glory

I'm following this for my CSM army:

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Chaos does tend to lend itself towards a few archtypes it seems - some of the units are just so much head and shoulders above the others that there isn't room for much debate.

Figure this:

Any troops you have WILL need rhinos.

Your troop, HQ, and Heavy slots should be the first things filled.

All of the Chaos troops are actually pretty good, even though Nurgle is most popular. I personally find the Khorne's to be more effective/enjoyable, but meh.

There's a reason so many folks use Lash.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Observations on complex unit wound allocation: If you're feeling screwed, your opponent is probably doing it right.

Chaos has terrible Fast Attack units.
Chaos Elites are pretty good, but because all of your units tend to be on the pricey side, you need to keep the costs down here to afford enough Troops.
You almost always want several Rhinos to get your squads where they need to go.
You almost always want to get a bunch of melta weapons into your troop squads, because antitank shooting is otherwise limited in the army.
Heavy Support is pretty much your only source of ranged antitank, and they're pretty much all good options, though our land raiders are not nearly as good as loyalist ones, so they're not very popular.

I had taken some time off from the Army Lists forum for the past few months, but by lucky chance I've been frequenting it again in the last few days, and have probably done a half dozen or more detailed rebuilds of various CSM lists. Let me see if I can get you a few links...
