On the back of "How do you explain your hobby to people" thread, what does your hobby get called by people you know?

My Missus refers to 40k as "your little plastic sh*t"

What do you have to put up with from your friends or Significant Other, with regard to your figures or the hobby?

"Toy Soldiers" is what the people at work refer to it as. My friends refer to it as "that thing that keeps you from affording to become an alcoholic".

Painting hams, mans, Warhams, plastic spacemen. Mostly things I say that they pick up on.

I've not quite let up on that yet. It came first, but painting does occupy my pint-hand a fair bit.

I'm sorry but if your "friends" make up names about your hobby then they are not really friends.

One of my more paranoid mates gets awfully over-animated when I call his figures 'toy soldiers'.

He does seem to hide his hobby like most would hide a porno stash...

yeah my non gaming mates call it 'your little men' which i then correct them in a very subtle way and say "No you morons! it's the greatest damn tabletop wargame ever produced, how can you not be into the escapism? what are you some kind of anti fun anti nerd police? get a life and but a battleforce before i stop being friends with you!"

other then my gaming club noone really knows about it. No-one expects it honestly lol. We dont seem like the types but my gf got into it when we started dateing so i guess i just lucked out.

Why would I have non-gamer friends?

I tend to describe warhammer 40k a sci-fi table top game that uses dice and measurements to play and somewhat camparable to a RTS style feel ech model has a line of stats which are used for determining various things

My GF calls it " your a sad git " but she really doesnt mind about it.

I have non-gaming acquaintances - and their opinion of my hobby is of no concern to me.

I care not for their manly men getting muddy and groping each other 'sport'. They can have their hobby, I have mine.

The wife sees it as nothing unusual. One of her brothers collects Hornby trains, another is a ham radio operator. Her dad collects r/c aircraft. I'm the normal one.

I've talked most of my non-gaming friends into the hobby actually. Even those who aren't can understand the idea of a fun game and tend to be impressed with how well I can paint. I'm certainly not museum quality, but I can stay inside the lines most of the time. I can show those same folks the work from some of the super-talented folks on here (and there are a few) and they're pretty amazed.

Honestly, folks are pretty cool about most hobbies now. I haven't had problems with people being dorks about things in quite a few years. I think some of it has to do with more and more of us being functional human beings and some of it has to do with folks finding out that geek hobbies tend to be fun.
