So my skepticism was correct: no plastic tiles.
The models look awesome in the promo pics. Lets hope we don't get a bait and switch a la the recent blastscape terrain debacle and they really are as nice as they look.
The models come in red (termis) and blue (stealers) not standard GW grey? Since this project was farmed out to FFG I expect the same plastic consistency as the models in the Decent game, etc.
People are assuming the figs are 40K scale, but no place does it say this and with the way they are based I am not 100% confident that they are same scale like most are assuming...
I'm sad for nostalgic reasons to not see the sustained fire dice and instead simple six sided dice, but I'll hold judgement until I see the new rules mechanics.
However I played space Hulk back in the day like it was crack and so i will have a copy of this for nostalgia value alone...

For people that like terrain plastic corridors/walls would have offered a lot more bang for the buck as they could also be used outside of space hulk and would have been fun to paint and so forth.
I can live with cardboard, but it would have been more exciting to have plastic, especially considering how cool some of the recent GW terrain kits have been. Look at the landing pad and imagine that level of detail on a set of modular corridors, etc. If that doesnt sound appealing to you then check your pulse as you may already be dead...

Neither do I. They actually look thicker than the previous two editions - which is fine as long as the connecting 'puzzel piece' joins fit with one another - so they won't 'break' without you trying to break them. They are also slightly multi-level, with embossed and engraved details, which is a nice touch.
God... plastic tiles would need to be cleaned, painted and is just too much effort for what is a simple board game.
And, again, this comes back to the core of this. All the complaints I've seen so far are because people can't take what's in the box and use it elsewhere. The tiles are cardboard, so are somehow 'useless' in regular 40K. Not only is this absurd, but it misses the point completely:
If all you want are cheap models, Space Hulk was not made for you. If you wanted new plastic terrain, Space Hulk was not made for you. If you wanted Space Hulk, the board game, then this Space Hulk was made for you.

That needed to be said and repeatedly here and everywhere the new Space Hulk is being discussed. But I'm sure a few posts farther along, someone will be complaining again that the contents aren't great for their 40K army or game table.

Definitely agreed however for retail you won't be able to buy more terminators and genestealers for a cheaper pricce; so model-wise its a bargain. Not to mention the mini's look to be very detailed and awesome; easily beating their terminator and genestealer counterparts.
The SM on the throne will be a great objective marker for 40k too.
I think I might go ahead and skip the discounters for this one but time will tell.

Pardon me if missed this elsewhere in the thread, but how "limited" are the supplies predicted to be on this? I kind of want to get my hands on it, but since I'm leaving for freshman year of college, I can't really justify the purchase yet. :\ I mean, is it "we have 2500 copies" limited or "we're going to make this until people don't buy it" limited?

How limited? There is only one production run, the question is how many copies were printed in that run. I wouldn't wait too long. Who knows how well it already sold today!?! I've heard from company sources that when it is sold in stores it will only be sold for one day and the number of copies per store may not be that high if the web sales are huge.
Here's GW's post about it:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/blogPost.jsp?aId=3700040a
"This is a one-off, limited edition product, with a single print run. If you have any interest in owning your own Space Hulk, I strongly suggest you advance order a copy today. Do not wait, because when they're gone, they're gone (although one of the Studio team did hint at a doing 50th anniversary edition in 2039). And DO NOT put this on your wish list, forget about it and expect to get one..."

Agreed H.B.M.C. I pre-ordered this for exactly that reason, I love Space Hulk, I want the new edition of Space Hulk. Plus, since it was just my b-day I received a little cash so net cost to me for the new Space Hulk was $25, making it well worth it.
I wouldn't really be surprised if GW posted new missions on-line. Not to mention you can probably easily re-create all the old missions from the other editions/ video games with little to now effort.

Guys , asking for decent looking terrain (plastic corridors ) is not as much far off crazy in the head as you guys finding it "normal" to paint board game pieces.
Just thought i should add something fair to this double standard situation.

You are aware that many companies continue to make 2D board pieces. Wizards even makes a fantasic range of modular kits for D&D, which are great for all sorts of things (I have them for Dark Heresy).
Appreciate good terrain? You're talking to the man with 12 unopened Bastions sitting in his spare room, who has hundreds of dollars of CoD Terrain (build and unbuilt), who built 8X6 city out of cardboard over the course of a week for use in only a single game and someone who damn-near creams his pants whenver GW releases a new terrain piece ('cept those Blastscape things). I appreciate terrain. It's one of the things I love doing - building terrain.
But this box doesn't come with terrain. It comes with tiles for use with a board game, and that's all. Projecting some sort of lofty goal outside of the box's aims is pointless.
What is the Space Hulk boxed game? A boxed game that contains Space Hulk.
Does this boxed game contain Space Hulk, yes/no? Yes.
Was this boxed game that contains Space Hulk designed for anything other than Space Hulk, yes/no? No.
People who buy this box looking for anything other than Space Hulk will find themselves annoyed at the outcome. Those that buy Space Hulk expecting Space Hulk are going to get great new minis, updated-yet-compatable tiles, and a revamped ruleset that looks to take from 1st Ed.

For myself, what they're made of is far less important than how they look.
For those of us who appreciate good looking terrain (even in a board game) card tiles is like something from the dark ages of Mordheim/Necromunda card terrain - I.e. something we hoped never to see again in the GW universe.
Speaking as someone who appreciates good looking terrain, I love the tiles as pictured and would have no problem incorporating them into games where appropriate.
The fact that they're 2D is mitigated by the fact that they're representing a floor (which is usually flat anyway) and that the artwork is just superb. Frankly, they would look better on the 40K table than a lot of the terrain I've played on over the years.

I think some people have missed the point that this is a boardgame. Not a tabletop wargame. The tiles should not be thought of as terrain in the tradition of a tabletop wargame but as a game board. Super imposing the misconception will only disappoint a person.

There have been no "Official" numbers released. What it does say is "with a single run print" in that article.
My translation of that - Order a.s.a.p. so we know how many to make, before we stop making them FOREVER. Also known as, "We have no hard production cap number. So when we feel the ordering rate has dropped to a low enough level, or we run out of materials alloted for this project, we stop taking orders."
To me that means if 200k are ordered in 2 weeks, and that's their time, they'll make 200k. If 400k are ordered in 1 week and they don't have the mats to make more, they cut it off. They also haven't said that the run has been done, or is in process, will be done next week, or will go on for a month. I wouldn't wait too long, but I would be in a panic if you can't order for 3-4 days. Honestly, who knows how long it would take them to crank out a half a million plastic minis?
To H.M.B.C. - I like your level-headedness. It's good to see some intelligent points being made on ANY forum. I pre-ordered for the minis though. I love the game, but I was kind of "meh" until I saw those Terms. Exception to the rule, and all that. Dollar for dollar, this is worth every penny of the $100.00 and boardgame to boardgame, Space Hulk stacks up very well IMO.
Long Live the Blood Angels!
P.S. If people don't want their static plastics, I'm sure people will trade you plain Terms they already own.

Those look quite nice!
How much are they for the whole set? I would consider dropping 80-100$ on a set like that.
Dwarven Forge eh? I will have to look further into this .
Looks like it is around 200 dollars U.S. total for the sci-fi stuff you posted. Not a bad deal, but I would have to seen some close-up pics before I thought about buying them.
These are quite nice though, I would definitely pick up a few if I had a bit of spare cash. 50 bucks for that much "techno-wall" is pretty damn good. Looks like 4 sets would cost around 60 dollars U.S. total and you would get 8 walls that are 6 inches long a piece. So that would be a 4 foot solid wall, or a 2 foot corridor. Not bad at all actually.

As a big fan of Rackham's hybrid and its expansion nemisis (spell?) I definitely agree. Tiles as part of a board game when well painted just add atmosphere. The trouble with Dakka is when something new for any system is released people try to work it into 40k.
Looking at the pictures it looks like a good product, but I still think it is poor value in comparison to other games. Like I said earlier, six months or so from now I guarantee this game will be gathering dust on shelves as people go back to 40k - unless there is additional support for it. I mean, GW would release a game with out plans to fully support it now would they.

I'm glad to see it and the miniatures look nice but even with all the price justifications FFG Descent comes with more of everything and is $10 less. I think $90 would have been the perfect price point on this. I'm not saying it is the worst deal in the world, but I think it could have been a little better.

I am pretty positive that the entire run is done. This isn't something where they can just pump out a few more.
-Boxes from the printer/packager
-Miniatures from china
-Rules from a printer
-Tiles from a higher quality printer, die cutter
Get it all produced in bulk for the best price, and ship to the packager/assembler and then get it shipped back out.
Many pallets of the game are already in the US warehouse, and will start shipping out to distributors this week, to arrive next week. Distirbutors take a day or two to check it in, and it will be available from them on the monday before release on Saturday, Sept. 5th, This gives a LGS a chance to order it mon/tue/wed and recieve it in 1-2 days.
So the number available to the US is set. I'd assume that it's very similar for other countries. They don't ship pallets of the game by air, it goes by sea and train. Takes a lot longer, but at a much cheaper price. At the US level, numbers are set for the various channels: GW direct (mailorder), GW retail stores, Trades sales to LGS, and bulk sales to distributors.
There's a possibility that if it doesn't sell in one part of the world, excess will get shipped elsewhere, but I doubt there will be excess. My bet is that when it sells out at the GW website, that's it. Although your LGS may have quantities available when it comes out. I'm grabbing all I can, to hopefully even have some for Christmas.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

I AM SO FETHED OFF RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!! GW Owes me either credit or a cut of every single SH box sales!
Look at this!
One of GW's "new" SH LC Termies!
The Termi I designed like 4 years ago!(lower left hand corner!)
I think I should be getting 5 or 10 cents per SH box sold!
lol okay I am just kidding.. I do think its cool though that something I thought up, also occured to the design team.
Well from the pic's they look like pretty good looking mini's. I pre-orded a box. I dont have my old copy anymore. I just have all the floor tiles. I wonder if they will be compatable?

"I have traveled through the Realm of Death and brought back novelty pencils"
Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
the band is playing somewhere and somewhere hearts are light, and somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout but there is no joy in Mudville — mighty Casey has struck out. |

Ahtman wrote:I'm glad to see it and the miniatures look nice but even with all the price justifications FFG Descent comes with more of everything and is $10 less. I think $90 would have been the perfect price point on this. I'm not saying it is the worst deal in the world, but I think it could have been a little better.
$65 to $75 would be about the price point I would have gone for it, although what would be nice is for the tiles and the rule book to be released - if that came separately for around $30 ish I could be tempted.
$100 for me is just past my price point to indulge in nostalgia - though that in no way invalidates anyone else choice, we all have different price points.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games. |
