Ahem, back on track The drums (sic) are formed and slightly detailed there is still the intake vanes and the half round stringers on the sides but the overall effect is good.

Man I am so jazzed about this project I can't believe a month ago I had lost interest. As convoluted as they are I can't wait to get started on the engine plumbing;hopefully starting this weekend. Of course I don't expect many replies; everyone else on this forum has a life. Hmmm......... I wonder what mxwllmdr's Mum is doing?

Seems like it would be so easy and tempting to go overboard on the piping. The podracer I bought a few years ago was insanely covered with bits. Even when you look at a real turbine engine it has tons of greeblies going on.

Pretty close but I have to say the FW plumbing looks more authentic. The 3D model has symmetrical plumbing fore and aft and top and bottom; it looks like he took a shortcut and just mirrored the detail. Not a big deal but not how a real enging looks plus there is no fuel control, generators or CSD's (Constant speed drives for the generators) and there is no bleed air for the pressurization and air conditioning.

Close as I am to the plumbing I'm going to have to find the FW engines and particularly the bottom view.

I have an excellent top view see the 4th image below.

I've decided to forget about the PVC and make the compressor section out of 0.40 mm sheet styrene I'll do this one to completion and see how it goes. So far every thing is lining up nicely.

I know that when I used .040 to make mine it was a nightmare to keep straight while rolling it and getting it glued into place. I had as many if not more clamps on it then you do and it was still very rough. I ended up using PVC to keep it in shape while it cured. Not using PVC will cut weight and still be as sturdy as it should be, though.

In spite of recent misgivings I must confess the compressor housing came off rather well. It's light and strong and will supply a styrene base to mount the various paraphernalia associated with engines of this type. now that I have the procedure pat the four remaining sections should prove more facile.

The Great Satan (East Coast)

Excerpt from basic Gas turbine technology training.

ACCESSORY SYSTEMS

Accessories for gas turbine engines can be divided into two categories: those driven by bleed air taken from the compressor section of the engine; those driven mechanically by an accessory drive shaft and gearbox connected directly to the turbine shaft. The mechanical connection from the turbine shaft may be through an engine-mounted gearbox or through a power takeoff shaft to a remotely mounted gearbox.

BLEED-AIR-DRIVEN ACCESSORIES

Gas turbines are unique among engines. High-pressure air is available for driving aircraft accessories by air motors or air turbines. Compressor discharge air at high pressure and temperature is bled from the engine through ports provided. This air is ducted as a source of power. It operates the air-conditioning units, hydraulic pumps, thrust reverser actuators, and various mechanical actuators in the airplane. Air for cockpit or cabin pressurization is also provided by bleed air from the engine compressor. On multiengined aircraft equipped with pneumatic engine starters, one engine is usually started from an auxiliary power unit or a ground air source. Air from this operating engine is bled through a system of ducts in the aircraft, to power the starters of the other engines.

The Pratt and Whitney dual-axial compressor turbine engine is an example that uses bleed air to operate accessories. The JT3D turbofan engine is used on aircraft such as the Boeing 707 and B-52 bomber (and most resembles the T'hawk engine even though the technology is almost 60 years old). This engine also uses a mechanical accessory gearbox. It usually has three separate bleed air systems: high pressure, low pressure, and overboard. The high- and low-pressure systems are used to drive aircraft, engine components, and accessories. The overboard is required to preclude compressor instability.

Compressor bleed air is also used to anti-ice the engine air inlet guide vanes and, frequently, parts of the air inlet duct. Low-pressure air has a pressure of approximately 50 psi and a temperature of more than 300° F. This low-pressure air is taken from bleed air parts compressor mid-section between the low-and high-pressure compressors. High-pressure bleed air has a pressure of about 160 psi and a temperature of more than 650° F when operating near sea level. This air is taken from the rear of the high-pressure compressor. The air available for driving accessories and for other purposes in the aircraft is usually about 3 or 4 percent of the primary engine airflow. Keep in mind the air under pressure that is extracted from the engine is not a bonus. Engine output and fuel consumption are sacrificed.

MECHANICALLY DRIVEN ACCESSORIES

The other method of driving accessories is a direct, mechanical drive operated by gearing from the compressor-turbine drive shaft. Accessory drives and accessory mounting pads are provided in an engine-mounted, accessory drive gearbox or in a remotely mounted gearbox. On some turbojet engines, accessory pads and mechanically powered drives are also provided in the engine nose section. For dual compressor, axial-flow engines, the main accessory drive gearbox usually receives its power from the high-pressure compressor drive shaft. Mechanically driven accessories include: tachometers, generators (alternators), hydraulic pumps, fuel pumps, oil pumps, fuel controls, starters, and (ii some instances) water pumps.

The #3 engine basic framework is complete and as usual it has set a standard that I will be hard pressed to equal. Everything came together so perfect than I could believe with less than a quarter mm error between the top and bottom halves and that will be covered by the fairing inboard of the engine so it won't be seen anyway

Now all that needs be do is to attempt to reasonably duplicate this on the other side.
