Not much to show for this morning; the trailing edge devices glued in place with a touch more work to do on the right wing device. The wing spars sliip nicely into the wing butt end slot and give a chord to the wing even though the prototype doesn't have one. It gives a little character to the wing and takes away from the block-like appearance.

I couldn't sleep last night; I was wide awake at 1:50AM so I figured why not do a little work on the T'hawk until i got sleepy. Well here it is 9 hours later and I'm still working on the d--ned thing. H-ll I couldn't be paid for working this hard but the results are gratifying none the less. I just fastened on the wings (temporarily with a couple of screws so the wings have a bit of negative dihedral (Dihedral! We don't need no stinking dihedral! (especially negative)). I'm lucky today is Saturday or I'd be in a world of hurt sleepwise.

20 years as an aircraft mechanic yes I know planes all too well.

Now for the engines:

As familiar as I am with current jet engines I'm stymied by the drum-like affairs surrounding the compressor housing and exhaust turbines on these engines. There are two above and two below and they seem to be vented with louvers fore and aft. My guess is they augment the intake air in the rarefied partial vacuum of orbital space but why they are needed on the rear as well is a mystery. After burner maybe?

Anywho here are the bits components of the basic engine rough cut and ready for final shaping and assembly.

mxwllmdr wrote:Black, that thing is turning out amazing.... What is dihedral, anyway?

Off the top of my head:

Most aircraft are built inherently stable; the wings form a shallow 'V' shape when viewed from the front or rear. This shallow 'V' shape causes the plane to fly straight and level with very little adjustment from the pilot. When I took basic flight training; that was what my instructor showed me in my first lesson. I was steering the Aeronca all over the sky and coulldn't get the plane to go where I wanted it to go. "Take your ham fists off the stick and watch what happens," he said and the plane settled into a smooth straight and level configuration all by itself (no crosswind was present which muddies up the theory). The ailerons on the outer trailing edge near the tips when moved cause that stable configuration to change by increasing the dihedral on one side and decreasing the dihedral on the other by the same amount and the aircraft banks to the side with the lesser dihedral. Using this feature in conjunction with the elevators and the rudder,( the control surfaces on the tail of the aircraft,) the bank becomes a turn to the side with the least dihedral. If you fly on commercial jets (the kind I worked on,) watch the wings when the pilot makes his turn on approach for landing; you may see a very slight movement of the aileron. That is because commercial jets aren't usually called on to make aerobatic maneuvers. The subtle movements are usually sufficient to give a comfortable low 'G' turn for the passengers.

Fighter planes today have little or no dihedral or negative dihedral (anhedral) in the case of Harrier type aircraft. The pilot or auto pilot must continually fly the plane. This instability makes for a more agile or responsive vehicle capable of high 'G' maneuvers.

The potato is a starchy, tuberous crop from the perennial Solanum tuberosum of the Solanaceae family (also known as the nightshades). The word potato may refer to the plant itself as well as the edible tuber. In the region of the Andes, there are some other closely related cultivated potato species. Potatoes were first introduced outside the Andes region four centuries ago, and have become an integral part of much of the world's cuisine. It is the world's fourth-largest food crop, following rice, wheat, and maize.[1] Long-term storage of potatoes requires specialised care in cold warehouses.[2]

Wild potato species occur throughout the Americas, from the United States to Uruguay.[3] The potato was originally believed to have been domesticated independently in multiple locations,[4] but later genetic testing of the wide variety of cultivars and wild species proved a single origin for potatoes in the area of present-day southern Peru (from a species in the Solanum brevicaule complex), where they were domesticated 7,000–10,000 years ago.[5][6][7] Following centuries of selective breeding, there are now over a thousand different types of potatoes.[6] Of these subspecies, a variety that at one point grew in the Chiloé Archipelago (the potato's south-central Chilean sub-center of origin) left its germplasm on over 99% of the cultivated potatoes worldwide.[8][9]

Following the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire, the Spanish introduced the potato to Europe in the second half of the 16th century. The staple was subsequently conveyed by European mariners to territories and ports throughout the world. The potato was slow to be adopted by distrustful European farmers, but soon enough it became an important food staple and field crop that played a major role in the European 19th century population boom................ Quote from Wikipedia which incidentally has an excellent article on the theory of flight happily I wasn't too far off the mark in my above statement.

Rocket Scientist! My god why not just say I'm a toll taker on the Golden Gate Bridge Sheesh!

Taking the rough cut cresent pieces, I tacked them together with a couple of dots of ambroid and sanded them to the final shape. Then separating them more or less in the middle I reversed the two pieces to see how well they conform to their mirror inages. Then I compared the ends to the middle. Happily they matched up pretty good.

The whatever it is cowling for the engine basic construction. The first two I made just for practice and are 23 mm long and the base flairs slightly. They will be abbreviated and used on the belly engine. The next set will be for the wing engines now that I have the specs down and will be 22 mm in length.

Only eight more to do, I do so hate repetition!

Thats a new one, no one has ever accused me of working fast.

The tedium of manufacturing ten of these half drums is behind me I took a break to gab some images. I saved the template as there are a few more of the shapes needed for the reinforcement girdles midway on the engine housing.

My Dear M. Hutt,

Sometimes you must bite the bullet and make an investment. The Chaos Warhound was a covenant between my son and myself duly slatted to be turned over to him on the completion of the bargain. That said I am not above using said Warhound for my own purposes I.E. verifying the legitimacy of the Lucie Project and setting the stage for a Mars Pattern build Nurgle or otherwise.

BTW nice to hear from you, I'll drop by your threads soon,

Whew that Armorcast stuff was really strange. Towering humanoid automatons with hideous weaponry with not a nod to scale or design. Perhaps FW deserves more credit for engineering design and functionality. At least the machines look like machines instead of drug induced hallucinations........... hmmmmm the '80s, based in CA, mebbe they were drug induced hallucinations.
