Also when does the next round start? I'm really keen to get my fingers messy... That did sound very wrong... Sorry .

All looks great. I like the details that littletower has done, esp. with the tunnel and I like how realistic Mekugi's looks.

I got the final pics of mine up in my P&M blog since Red said I was too late for here =(

But NEXT time!!!!

Okay guys, A sinus head-ache strong enough to fell a bull moose is keeping me up...

Since We are close to a decision at this point, I thought that I would take the time to remind you that you can PM me with your vote for the honorable mention for this contest.

Do keep in mind that the judges are in different time zones ( a 5 hour difference) , and this is slowing things down a bit.

Soon the wait will be over. I promise

Congratulations to all, this was a splendid turn-out.

And, wow! Really crap start to the day (getting up at 0500, and then finding out my whole existence has been entirely forgotten by my lift ), made marginally better by using my powers of persuasion to take a day's leave, and now made much better by finding I won And got the hourable mention too! Aww...you guys...you're great...you know that right?

I'll be honest, I was hoping for the honourable mention purely down to the idea, but really didn't expect to place - I guess like most of us, all I can see are the many flaws in my work.

Looking forward to the comments and critiques, and the next comp.....oh, wait.....that's me now isn't it

I'll give it some thought and should have something up by tomorrow - I'm thinking something that can be (but doesn't have to be ) pretty quick and simple as I know peep's time does get eaten up in the coming season).

Well done everyone that entered, and to Red for a great theme and running the competition, and to my fellow judge, Graven, for the hard work in the judging... And it was hard work judging this competition.

The scoring was so tight you wouldn't believe. Every piece had a moment of excellence, ahead of all the others, so you can all hold your heads up high.

Some of the highlights for me:
A serene egg in spitting distance from a bloody splat (M0rdain),
Superb presentation that tricks the eye (Mekugi), and those spray-cans ,
Dead bits of tree and a crazy yellow contraption (Littletower),
Sailing a sea of mud in a moment of peace (xXWeaponPrimeXx),
Little tufts of grass growing from a crack in the wall (Camkierhi),
Moving parts that work for real (Viktor Von Domm),
And a clawed hand holding aloft a large staring eye (Monkeytroll).

There was so many moments like this that make the hard work of judging, worthwhile.

So, to the critiques. I write these out for myself, in the process of judging. They are, therefore, picking at every fault I can find and are all my own opinions; This means I may pick out something that you or others disagree with, I am fine with that and there is no offence meant.

I'm not the greatest modeller out there, but I strive for perfection in all my models, and each one gets the same level of scrutiny that your's get here. This is what you are being compared to; perfection. Everybody will fall short, but that doesn't mean that you are "wrong" or "bad" or that your piece is "rubbish".

I will however, not just point out the faults, but will offer suggestions to what could have been changed to achieve higher marks or things I would have done differently (which may or may not have given higher marks).

I don't just pick out the faults either, I will mention neutral changes or additions (as a personal preference to me, often the addition of tiny details because I like that kind of thing), and I will praise things that I like.

As these are written (by a dyslexic) during the judging process, they can get a bit "stream of conciousness", so if something is unclear, just ask.

With all that in mind, I hope that you find it useful for improving your modelling.

So, in no particular order:
Mekugi:
Spoiler:
Overall a nice piece. Well thought out and put together. Your photos are particularly worthy of praise and are a good example of how to present a model in the real world. However, the harsh lighting can hide details (as well as sins), but you did take enough angles to show everything. Looks to be fairly playable, although some models may have toppling issues in places, and looks to be easily expandable to fill a table.

The expanded polystyrene works well as a basis for the concrete/tarmac, although in places did look a bit too much like polystyrene upon close examination.

Mud/dirt/rocks look great and the small patches of grass look natural. The tall grass bunches look a bit too regular though. There's no in-between, it's short patches of grass and tall bunches of grass, could have done with some shorter grass around the tall grass (would also have hidden where you have glued them down). Those bunches could have also been roughed up a bit and thinned/spread out. They look like someone has come along as tidied them up into bunches of all the same length.

The forgotten/discarded trash is a nice touch. The wheels look good. The spray cans are great. The rhino side though, makes me wonder what's happened to the rest of it. It's a bit too flat to the ground. If the rhino had exploded to the extent to make the rest of the vehicle disappear (I realise that it could just be off the side of the base, some indication of this would help that), then why is this side so relatively undamaged. The rest of the tank can't be buried as, if the ground was that soft, the bridge would have collapsed on to that area. It's just a bit too perfectly side on. Maybe it's a spare side of a rhino that's been "lost"... But as a scratch build, it is perfectly recognisable and a good job.

Painting is very effective. I'm caught in two minds with it really. On the one hand the work appears quite basic, but it is very effective. The graffiti is good and the dirt over that looks perfect. The main problem is the runs of brown; they are largely all the same size/thickness. These could have been improved upon by adding some thinner runs and darkening the centre of others (to show repeated deposits). Some of the tracks are looking a bit too large for the scale. But, on the whole, still very effective. Can't fault the colouration of the mud/dirt, the variation in tones looks very natural.

Good piece, very effective, well presented.

Littletower:
Spoiler:
Nice concept. Well designed and built, with a good layout.
The mountainside: Rock looks pretty natural, in shape and colour. As does the concrete, the texture might be a little too large for the scale, but not so much to cause an issue. The mud is good, a nice dusty/sandy look to it with nice variation to the tones. Good job on the remnants of a tread pattern. The ballast looks the part, but I might have done it a darker colour to contrast with the surrounding mud, whether that would work better, I can't say.

Nice trees/plant-life, like the addition of the dead bits that have fallen off.
Good use of the real rusty metal and a good job matching it on the bits you did paint, the hammered rivets work well.. I liked the idea of the vent in the overhang and it does work well. The metal walkway could have done with something more. Something to give it purpose or make it look less like a piece of metal laid on supports, a hand-rail for example.

The boxes and barrels look the part. Although the barrels would have been a good point to add some extra colour to the piece, the coppery finish to them kind of blends them in to the doors and the rock. The little carrier thing looks good and is a nice use of parts. The picture inside the doors is a good idea (and something I planned on using for when I make a ravine). It may only work from one angle, but it is better than just a black hole. Good idea to set it back and have real 3D things in there to add to the illusion.

And the dodo crane (I bet you thought I'd skipped over that), a very effective build, looks great. To nit-pick I would say the yellow could be smoother in places, the black could have done with a bit more highlighting and the splits in the guitar wire spoil the illusion of hoses a little. I'm not sure about the plough on it either, it looks good and is painted nicely, just the utility of a plough on a small vehicle. Not a major issue, just a personal thing.

Nice overall, can be played on and would work well as a mission objective (capture/defend type thing), but the large base would make it distant from a flat table and will need extensions to give the tracks and path somewhere to go. The angled sides make it look like a display piece but without a story to make it a diorama. It would be possible to create extra tiles to extend this (if you're lucky you could do this for each following competition... ), and I hope to see more like this.

Cam:
Spoiler:
Equal parts craziness, humour, detail and skill. Good work.
The road is very good. Nice texture, good colours. The cobblestone side-street is a good idea. The drains and manhole cover are nice touches. The pavements are nice, with good weathering/damage. The walls look good, but are outshone by the pavement and look a bit lacking in detail, relatively.
I see a couple of slips of the paintbrush (some rusty drain on the kerb for example). The road markings are good. The green line could have spilled onto the leaves there to show a quick a dirty job of whoever had the spray-can, rather than stopping dead at the leaves, but only a suggestion.

The plant-life is good, well placed. Like the little bits growing in cracks etc... The leaf-litter is also well placed. Good Ol' Birch. The 'shrooms possibly could have been better if they were more regularly shaped, some look a little squashed. The other bits of litter are nice, the newspaper in particular. and Holy ... what are those giant worm things with the glowing eyes!?

The rubbish bins, dumpsters, stop sign (although the "STOP" could have been straighter for a sign) and gates are all good additions. I like that you've matched the house numbers on the bins and gates. The dumpsters are a good use of the pill things. The addition of the lift bars are good. Again the writing on them could be neater, but the rust looks spot on. Who's Fred?

The Lamp-posts are great. The shape is good. The ends of the lamp parts could have been tidied up with a little filler and sanding. I like that you've added the wires inside the open one. The OSL from them is great, well executed and thought out with the addition of shadows.

The wreck looks the part. Burnt out, twisted and rusty. The graffiti on it is nicely done again.
The Orks are a nice collection of characters as they tend to be. The skin on them, could do with an extra highlight layer in places, it may be that you are covering too much of the mid-tone with the highlight. Some little slips and some metal bits not painted (back of Mr. Mohawk). The cheerleader... is more terrifying the closer you look... Good work on adding the womanly shape to her. The sculpting could be a little neater along the edge of her top. Colours are good and the shading on her is good.

The Orky racer is nice and Orky. Good build of the engine and I would have said yes to the dozer-blade, as it give the right look to the racer and would be what an Ork would think of after seeing a "real" racing car.

The flag-girl is a good use of the Wych parts. Good effort on the body and arms. The back of her neck could have been smoothed just a little more, or hidden with the painting. The skin tone looks nice, and the tattoo is good. Hair looks nice too (and that is nothing to do with my ginger wych either). And are they "shiny" red PVC trousers she's wearing... Ooo. Good work. The flag is nice. Good job on the many checks. Thinner is good and the tattered look is well done. I like to think that she is about to be scooped up in the Ork's arms, as the alternative is that she is splattered up the side of the Imperial racer. I might have changed the angle of the Imperial racer so it looked like it was going to pass her rather than mow her down (if you look straight on, it appears to be angled towards her).

The Imperial racer is nice. Good shape (better than some the official models). Nice work on the glass, but some of the highlights could have been neater (this shows up more on the crisp, straight lines of imperial things than on Orky things). Good job on the Space Marines. Very good faces and nice colours, but some of the lines are a little rough and the blending could be smoother on the blue. The two with pom-poms are hilarious, especially with that face.

Overall, great job. So many little details I would be proud of. Good build and good painting. Just some little rough edges to both that can be smoothed out.

And the black outsides of the walls would be nicer if they were not streaky... Yes, I look at these things, but I won't be harsh to remove marks from it this time... or will I...

Monkeytroll:
Spoiler:
A crazy idea brought to completion wonderfully well. So much detail it's difficult to know where to start.
Nice use of parts and good job tying them into the structure of the road. The many little details come together to make probably the best representation of chaos out there. What can I see? A hand holding a large eyeball, is that a dinosaur head? rocks, concrete, skulls, cogs (like how they are poking out of a hole), sharp-fanged mouths, fleshy bits, gooey bits, like the swirly area (wouldn't have thought of that), leach like things, tread-plate, stringy gore (nicely done), veins and arteries, something with a long tongue, Giger bits, screaming heads, something chained to a cog-filled area, overlapping sections, twists, a pregnant embryo?, claws, many many tentacles (yay!) and many other random body parts that all come together to create a living strip of the warp.

The modelling is largely seamless, with one thing blending into another. Good use of the crackle medium in many places, the multi-layered areas are a particularly good idea. The painting is equally random and fits the model. Some of the blending could be smoother or more graduated, as some of the colour changes are a little too stark. Nice mixture of matt, gloss and metallic finishes. The painting of the checks, the large eyeball, and many of the heads is good.

The occupants are good and well posed/positioned. Good colour choices on the marine types, makes them stand out from the road in a good way. Some of the painting on them could be smoother or neater in places. The interactions with the more daemonic occupants are well done in such a complex space.
The daemonic occupants are a great mixture of parts and putty work. Some of them really do appear to have personalities and the way they are sprouting from the road give a good sense of the fluid nature of the road.

Great work. A nice and very original diorama. One addition I can think of is an obvious portal with a marine falling/walking/pulled though to show how they came to be trapped there and maybe a body that is being "reclaimed" by the road to show the only possible ending...

The rest of you haven't expressed where/if you want the critiques (I think). Let me know, they are already written and just a ctrl-c ctrl-v away.
