Argh.

I think I'm spreading myself too thin... (thats what she said!)

Aside from 2 Vanilla SM armies I'm working on (and maybe 2 or 3 more thanks to the Armageddon source book), I've also got projects for armies for Tau, Orks, Nids, and IG... and though I haven't come up with a list for them yet, I'm also looking to try my hand at SW, BA, DE, WoC, and WOTR armies... and thats just for GW stuff... For Hordemachine I was planning to start up Skorne and Cygnar (bye bye Circle and Khador... papa loves you ) And then there's also Infinity, Malifaux, and Anima Tactics.

And its not like I'm any good at this modeling stuff (re: mould lines ) nor am I any good at these games (They call me Mr. Universe because I'm the worst player in the universe )... but dang its fun to work on this stuff.

How does one curb their enthusiasm when there is so much great stuff to work on? How do you handle your glut of projects?

EDIT: Forgot to mention conversions and other miscellaneous projects too.

I don't think it's ever a good idea to sell an army if you've painted or played a substantial amount of it. You just need to learn to focus on one unit at a time and eventually you can get something good out of it. I've started Warriors of Chaos, Flesh Tearers, and Tyranids over the last 12 months only to almost immediately trade off or sell everything so I could divert more attention to my Guard. I've been really good about just working on these guys for a while, and once I've got them all painted up or just get tired of painting Catachans, I'll get back to my Iron Warriors.

Just work through your armies like crop rotation. You could also start by tackling smaller armies first - I'm sure those Warmachine armies are significantly smaller than your IG and Orks.

I find that if I realize I have too many projects going on I need to box stuff up so I can finish something 9even if it's a squad or two) instead of trying to work on five different projects and failing at all of them.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Yeah... that might help. I need to clean up the apartment anyway... (must have stepped on like 7 Servitor skulls the other day).

I'm really bad with that as well. I am thinking of starting Warmachine, but know, with 100% certainty, that if I do, I will need to have them commissioned, or they will never see paint.

I work on one unit at a time, but I try to rotate what armies the unit is for. Work terrain in there for a break and you're in good shape.

It still takes forever, but at least it helps reduce burn-out.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Yeah, the number of projects that pile up can be overwhelming -.-

Usually I see it as the opportunity to bring some variety in my painting, but right now it´s way to much. I have 4 partially painted Fantasy armies, 2 partially painted 40k armies and 2 Warmahordes armies.

Currently I´m trying to work on one project per game. That should allow me to bring some variety while still being focused enough to actually finish an army at some point. It´s still 3 projects at once, but that´s kinda manageable if I work unit by unit.

I'm trying to work my way to a LUDICROUS amount of projects.

I was about to pile on Eldar stuff today... was *thiiiissss* close to buying the huge Battleforce box that contains a unit of guardians, a unit of dire avengers, howling banshees, a vyper bike, a wraithlord, a falcon, an HQ (forgot what it was called a warlock?) and some fire dragons(?)...also it included the codex.

...but I passed my leadership test and was able to resist.

I find that after reading a book, or watching a movie I think, "Hey, that book/movie was awesome, I could totally do an army themed around it."

That line of thought, more than new model syndrome, is the reason I also have so many unfinished armies.

However, since I've gotten into warmachine, (watching Hellraiser lead me to Cryx) I've made a lot of progress because of the low model count. Perhaps you could box up all your armies but one and just pretend you only have the single project.

Yeah, I'm planning to do that... It'll help a lot to not have them so readily available to work on. In fact my Orks are in the garage right now. I could probably stand to put my Nids, Tau, and IG there too.

I also get side tracked when I hit a snag while painting. In the past I've just dropped the whole army and wandered to something else. Now if I can't get my shading on a particular model to work or something, I just go to a different model in the same army.

Here at SoulDestroying Inc, we have come up with a tried-and-tested product that we can guarantee will work:
Spoiler:

!!!REALITY(TM)!!!
Got so much free time and disposable income you cant decide what to do? Then this will solve all your problems in one fell swoop!
With Reality(TM), we systematically eliminate all known causes of 'hobby' advancement:
  • Free Time: Got so much time on your hands that you don't know whether to start another project or work on an existing one? Reality(TM) will adjust your free time levels so that you won't have time to work on multiple projects, you won't even have time to eat a proper meal!

  • Disposable Income: Reality(TM) will take all that capital you would normally invest in multiple hobby projects and automatically re-invest it in mandatory living costs. With Reality(TM) you won't have to think about which models to buy, you'll be thinking about selling your existing ones just so you don't end up homeless!

  • No Relationships? One of our specially-trained 'UnderMiners(TM)' will be with you night and day to constantly remind you there are more important things that your hobby! Thus filling those dangerous little spaces of free time with activities such as furniture shopping, house hunting and our personal favourite, 'doing the household accounts'!

  • With our patented 'Spirit-Suck' technology, we can guarantee that Reality(TM) will soon eliminate all that unwanted creativity and imagination you find so frustrating! Do you have so much creativity that you can never work on one project at a time? Reality(TM) guarantees that the only thing you will ever be inspired by is going to bed at night!

  • Like-minded peers motivating you to take up new projects at enjoyable events? Reality(TM) will replace those dangerous free-thinkers and fun events with work colleagues, neighbors, distant relatives you neither know or like and acquaintances with nothing in common to you! Who needs Game Night at the LGS when you have formal work functions, tupperware sales events, grocery shopping and neighborhood watch meetings!

  • You get all this for the low-low price of just being old enough to pay taxes!

Reality(TM) We guarantee to solve your hobby problems, so you don't have to!

Well, I'm working through PLAID projects.

So far as constantly starting a stupid amount of projects go, I feel you. There is a very much a collectible angle to warhams, and if you have a job and no kids, it's fairly easy to go off the wrong end of the "I buy stuff" / I have time to completely build and paint stuff" curve

That's too many armies dude, and you know it or you wouldn't have posted this thread!

Seriously you could have half of what you listed and still have more than you know what to do with. I say 2 armies for each system you play, big max. If you start a 3rd, you should be able to say your other 2 are functionally completed from a collection standpoint.

Funny, I also have way to may projects if I look at my free time ( almost non existent these days) its impossible to complete them... My method is very simple, I just paint or sculpt what I want when I can, I have no hurry or deadlines and stress is a tabu in my hobby time.

Thats why all my stuff is incomplete, I dont mind it as long as I have fun painting or sculpting something when I have the chance. On my table there is 1 yujing and one kraken half painted and Im having lots of fun with them... for 2 months now

I have real problems with it. I am a notoriously slow painter; this has only got worse recently with the birth of my first child to the extent where I haven't really painted anything in months.

Not only that, but I am an inveterate collector and sufferer of shiny model syndrome, to the extent where I now have pretty much at least 3000 points of every 40k army, with multiple MEQ armies, and a bunch of Mantic fantasy armies waiting to be painted (this is not taking into account the Epic army equivalents or any of the other Specialist Games stuff that is waiting). Of all those armies, I would consider 1 to be 100% painted, 1 other 95% painted to my satisfaction and 1 other to be maybe 50% complete. The others either aren't started or have been painted by a previous owner and need to be redone.

I have real problems maintaining enthusiasm. It gets worse when one sees army case after army case glaring accusingly every time I go into my man cave. To be honest, the only real advice I can give is to focus on an army and try to get it done rather than flitting from one project to the next. For the love of God, try not to look at the total amount of stuff to be done because it will depress you! Try to set realistic goals to attain. My resolution from now on is to only paint what I have - I have declared a complete moratorium on buying any more miniatures until such time as I have painted what I have got. This is likely to number in the years or possible decades.

This idea is absolute anathema to me. Clarification: its not that I consider myself to be a good painter - I most definitely am not. However, anything I paint has unmistakeably my stamp on it, for good or worse, and if I paid someone to do it for me that wouldn't be the case even if I had specified the paint job down to the last minute detail. I can't really explain it better than that; I loathe painting to be honest, yet conversely I will only let myself do it.

    Moving flat out..

I have way to many projects as well..
And with me having to relocate to New Jersey by July,
I'm duanted by the task of having to pack everything up and move it on up there.

    Current Projects:
    Assembling, Painting Salamanders 2000.
Finishing Painting, Basing Eldar from 1850 to 2000.
Painting CSM Noise Marines, Vehicles 2000.
New Ork List, painting Bikers and Battlewagons, 2000.
IG Steel Legion w/Imperial Navy Support 2000 (I should relaly sell this army!)

I don't mind the multiple projects - I just get frustrated how little time is left over to complete projects after all the responsibilites of every day life are complete.

And Forge World keeps tempting me to add to the Eldar Apocalypse Army! Argh!

I am so bad at this myself. Add to the fact that I commission paint as well, so my own models have very little chance to get done too. I've toyed with the idea of selling off an army or 4, but when it comes to parting with one of them, it's really hard to do so, especially ones that have had conversion work, or use models/bits that are no longer available.

Ive actually started not letting myself get new things for an army before all the other things are finished. I've also started finding loop holes in that by starting new armies, limited edition stuff, "supporting" whatever store I play at, and "good deals". Hopeless.

I've been victim to the burn out many a time, far to many projects for me. And thats still was stil wayl less than the OP.

In the end, about 3 months ago I decided I will finish my main army I've had for 10+ years(black templar), streamline it and finish it. Thus putting aside my other two SM armies, my eldar and tyranids. I am painting squad by squad until I feel the burn out coming on then switch to modelling the next unit that I want done or a fun conversion to use for my BT's. So far its working and I'm nearly finished my 2nd ever fully painted crusader squad. Well...most of them are painted already but have been left with my skill level from many a year ago. So redoing all models to my current skill level and re-poseing many of them as well.

Check it out if you like. A bit of a rusty start, but it gets going.
    http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=214218&hl=Eberious

Before I did this it was a mess, and any time I looked at the modeling station I just thought "screw it" and went off to do something completely different and unrelated to war gaming.

Also my rule as of last year is to not buy anything I dont actullay need. The exception is new stuff and if it passes the "that looks awesome test", I'll get it.
