Hey folks, just thought I'd show you what I've been up to recently. I started working on this project about 2 days ago, and I've been making fast progress. This cathedral model is going to be sold as soon as it's done, for I (already) have another project in mind. I'll sell it off on ebay so if anyone wants a heads up when I'm selling it just ask. Quite far in this project and it hasn't taken long so far. Recently I have been busy making 40k buildings to sell for a bit of cash, and that has worked out quite nicely.

Each window has been hand carved out of foamcore, and I'm working on the front and back of the cathedral at the mo. I'll fill in the other side of windows soon. Got the steps done today and most of the stained windows. One side of the cathedral will be a ruin so that it's easily accessible. C&C's Welcome!

Here was the outline with towers and a few foam pieces to show the sides.

Sides were then cut out and then further the windows.

Basic window template was drawn out.

Side piece was cut out, still having some trouble with sizes here thought - might need to restart.

Stained windows were then added in with thinner foamcore. This is the time consuming part

Side piece was cut out and the second stage of windows was added with arches underneeth

Just completed both pieces here with all the windows

Steps were carved out with the router

Where I am at the moment, used the router to get some depth at the door too.

Very nice, any chance of sticking a mini next to it for scale?

Can't wait to see it finished.

ehe cheers folks. I've worked on it a little this morning so I'll get you a few more WIP pictures. The idea is that one side of the cathedral will have collapased, so there will be plenty of rubble. There will be some parts of the roof still intact but most will have been smashed to pieces. My view is to have a heavily damaged cathedral, but still enough of it left to make it impressive. Since I'm selling it on ebay I will be cutting it right in half so that it can be sent more easily in two pieces. I had the thought of sending it flat packed, which would save on postage cost... what is your view on this?

I finished the otherside of the cathedral where I cut out all the windows and detailed pieces in the foamcore. I've also added a little design around the side of the base for I thought it was a little blank. Seems to have worked so I'm rather happy. Apart from that I added the two windows on the towers, although as you can see there were a few mistakes done with the router.

The last picture is just a quick shot of the inside, there isn't a great deal of space but then again you can't the other side (behind the arches). I'm thinking of elevating on the outer bit where the arches are so that there is a little more depth and also it means there is more room for the roof.
So progress so far is slow but steady, Any suggestions to improve it so far?

Here's that scaled picture with the model you asked for:

ya, big enough.

Quick question, wha should I do? Go with method 1, which is just the normal one OR go with method 2 where there are 2 'flying' pieces... (of cource there will be a longer top piece to connect up to the higher wall)

I think that either of them could work, but option 1 looks more visually interesting.

Method 1. The gap just looks odd, even with the second support.

ehe thanks mate.

A quick update, didn't get much done but I had some time to finish off the flying butresses. They do look a little off because i haven't glued them yet, the whole cathedral is just standing on it's own (apart from the towers which have some tape to keep them together) Decided to go for every 2 windows because otherwise it looks way too cluttered.

This is really awesome, will it be ruined or a complete cathedral?

I really wouldn't mind making a complete one but I'm afraid not. One of the walls will be heavily damaged and crumbled while the other still partially intact. I need some of the walls to be at least low enough so that you can easily put your hand in and access your men etc...

Wow, nice work! The buttresses look really good flush with the sides of the building like that.

One thought thought, the shipping on that puppy will be just as epic as the scale. Consider making future projects modular to break down into bits (nesting if possible) for easy shipping/storage. Just sayin'.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Well I have the two options, the first one is to cut the whole thing in half so I can ship it in two pieces. This allows easier postage and storage. Second option I thought of was if I fully complete it but leave it flat packed. I'd add in the box instructions/pictures on how to put it together. That would save quite a bit of postage, what you say?

Well I'm back onto this project again and I've started testing paints and textures. I used the method of pressing tin foil into the foam to give it some depth, then just went for mixed sand, glue and paint on top. The only problem is bricks.... so I'll see what it's like without first.

Right I've been working on it a little more tonight. At every joint I need to add some paste so it doesn't look like there are joints. It's not difficult but time consuming, especially for everything to dry. I even used the hairdryer to speed things up a little. I'll show you my progress and also what I will do.
If you look down to the first picture I'm going to cut the whole model in half since it's such a big model. The main reason for this is I'm not going to keep it but sell it. Also guys what are your suggestions on the roof? The Cathedrals going to be heavily damaged with some fallen walls but I need to take in playability in mind as well.

Ive had allot of great results with working with vallejo pumice, there is a large variety to choose from for different applications. Its worked wonders with making Styrofoam creations for my battlefield.

If you take the grey pumice and layer it, allow to dry overnight and then reapply you can easily create a great scaling effect for stone.

Hey folks, well to answer one of your questions it took just over 2 days to get to this stage. Of course as usual I start something, lose interest and then pick it up again a few months on. It's very time consuming though cutting out each window and there are 32 of them. Another quick update, although it takes so long for everything to dry.
