Hey folks!
Recovering from my disappointment that the GT in Arkansas is for Fantasy and not 40k....why are all the events on the extreme ends of the coast? I think the only GT within 10 hours driving of me this year is BOLScon/Wargamescon.
There's *got* to be GTs elsewhere. Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, Louisiana....nothing?
Someone, please....alleviate my depression.
*edit*
Alright...
So here's what I've found. Fill in any missing links for me please!
Alamo GT May 14-15 in San Antonio (40-60 people)
Railhead Rumble June 10-12, Dallas, TX at the A-Kon Convention - I've found no contact information, but I sent an e-mail to where lists go asking if this is the first year they're holding it, what attendance was last year if they held it.
Astronomicon, Dallas TX: No dates or information available - not sure if they're holding it again this year. I've e-mailed one of the coordinators asking for details.
Independence Day Massacre: Fayetteville, AR, June 10-12. Same weekend as Railhead Rumble. While the Railhead Rumble is closer, I'd probably go to AR for the GT unless the Railhead is bigger.
WargamesCon: July 7-10, Austin TX.
Wasteland Wars GT: September 17-18th, Lubbock TX. I've e-mailed asking for info, but haven't heard back. What I have found is discouraging. 1850 GT, no special characters allowed (WTF?) I see 10 people registered, and it looks like they had 18 last year.
Am I missing any? I looked into Bayou Wars, but the site is pretty dead, and has no hint of any sort of 40k event there. Dicehead is a team tournament, not a singles GT so is out. Anything else?

Welcome to the Deep South...
In my almost 20 years of GW games, there have only been about 5-6 GT-level tournaments in the Deep South.
Atlanta had a GT, Charlotte had a GT, the Necro (in FL) is a good tournament, there used to be a good tournament run by the Atlanta/Chattanooga guys, and a few years back there was a GT-event in Memphis. In 10 years or so of GT-level events, that is pretty much it.

Supposedly, with GW relocating to Memphis, there might soon be more events hosted there??? And Memphis is a fun place, if you ignore the propensity for getting easliy shot in certain sectors of the city...

Well, Texas needs to BattleBunker, in the Houston area because of this.
And the fact that Texas is huge population wise, store count wise there's what 8 stores now? and more coming.
Houston is on of the largest cities and ports, in the world.
Which means--->kids/teens target market for GW.
I mean why not have a BB in the major cities like L.A, NY, Houston etc.
There was talk a while back about it happening before the recession and massive firings to GW stores.
hopefully GW will see the light and see that Houston is a gold min to have a BattleBunker.
This also is the perfect marketing area for Mexico/South American GW players and Central/Southern U.S. players.
And everything bigger and better in Texas so why not?

A very good chance that there will be some GT's of some type or another at the Bunker in Memphis.

You can always take a train to some of the GTs outside of your driving range. Scott Simpson did it and I did it once. Then again you can always move. North Carolina has endless gaming and it is a pretty solid store with RTTs that have over 20 people show up. FTW games in Virginia. Also there is the ATC that is going on which has a singles event. Several indy events in Tennessee IIRC.

You are in luck. Thehogsofwar.com is the premier site for Arkansas war gaming. There is a GT 40k tournement this June called Independence Day Massacre. It is ran by the same people as Sooiepoolza, so no need to feel that disappointment! Here is a link to the forum post.

You should definitely give the Bugeater a shot. Even if its a longer drive for you or anyone else reading this, we're also a NOVA style event so it would be a good warmup for the throwdown in August. $45.00 is the TOTAL price for the entire event, can't get much cheaper than that .

Scott is notoriously "uncomfortable" with flying. Of course I think it took him something like 2 days to get to LV on a train.

I believe The Big Waagh 40K GT was actually run by the guys from Huntsville, AL, in conjunction with the Arkansas guys who ran the WHFB side. They also run an invitational tournamenrt called The Kalm Before the Waagh, which you can see here: http://thekalm.com/ . If you like bbq and beer, while playing in a tournament, then it is a good time. However, it fills up in about a week pretty much with invitees only. Another nice thing about Huntsville, is a lot of airlines fly there direct because of the military and NASA presence.

Endless Gaming just opened in the last year, right? I talked to multiple high-quality gamers at Adepticon this year who spoke highly of it. I played against the owner in the Adepticon Team Tourney last year, and he was a good dude, excellent painter, and a high-quality competitive player. I would suspect that his events are probably well worth attending.

Atlanta GA has some very high quality RTTs, and that's no longer a feasible commute, let alone a 22 hour drive to Raleigh, NC for an RTT. =p

You can always move back to FL.
There are no GT level events in this region I think because of the weather...most people think that it's too nice out, etc. Since I'm from the Midwest, I think that 94+ degree heat and humidity isn't nice at all... LOL. Or it's just a lack of people getting things organized.

I think it also has to do with the population density of players. This probably goes back to the weather, but also the fact that Florida has a huge population sprawl problem. Another thing I've noticed about Florida is that they pay scale here isn't as high (versus the cost of living) as it is in other states; employers tend to pay less because people want to live here (as opposed to a colder, snowier climate). At the stores I've seen in the Tampa area, there are quite a few people who are interested in 40k but just aren't willing to lay out the cash for it.
It's all those things adding up. Plus, you know, Floridians are crazier than hell.

Dallas is only 5.5 hours. I'd drive there for a GT. For an RTT? Nope. Houston, Austin, San Antonio....those are all much....much further away from me than Dallas. I'm not driving more than three hours for a one day event, I cap two day events to about 8 hours of driving or 6 hours of flying.
Its 5 hours worth of flying to get to Austin for Wargamescon, but I plan on attending - just too far for a one day event.

Tennessee has a pretty active tournament scene. Mostly in the Chattanooga and Murphreesboro/Nashville area.
Rtt vs GT can be relative. Several tourneys in this area are RTT's - but pull in 50-100 people. Examples are Battle for Stones River (M'boro - was over 50 people), Maul at the Maul (usually 80' sh people in Chattanooga), The Siege ( ATC tourney there has 22 teams currently - so that's 110' sh people + several other tourneys), and the Kalm before the Waagh - the best little tourney EVER in Huntsville, AL (which is about 60 people). Automatically Appended Next Post: Foda_Bett wrote:There was the "Big Waaagh" GT for a while in Memphis but the last time they had it the organizer took a bunch of $ and split. Don't know the whole story here - but know the 40K guys reasonably well and heard they got hosed in the deal they had and wound up eating some big dollars over the event.
Which SUCKS because as best I know they are stand up guys and didn't deserve that at all.
Just wanted to make sure that none of the 40K guys were being viewed in a bad light unfairly.
