Hi gang, this is a thread dedicated to the sheer awesomeness of Sharpe.

For those of you who don't know, Sharpe was/is a long-running British TV show (based on a series of books by Bernard Cornwell) chronicling the exploits of Richard Sharpe, a soldier in the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. It stars Sean ('One does not simply walk into Mordor') Bean as the titular protagonist, and frankly, one of the finest character performances in British TV history. It was just classic Sunday evening TV, and most British males of a certain age grew up watching the 'Boy's Own'-type adventures of the salty Yorkshireman and his misfit band of rogues. It had the lot - explosions, (mild) swearing, grog, heaving bosoms, swashbuckling, villains with dodgy foreign accents, villains with dodgy foreign accents getting kicked in the bollocks...

Just a brilliant show. Anyhow, it's currently being re-shown on UK Freeview history channel 'Yesterday' and I'd totally forgotten how great it was! Now I'm hooked...

Very much so. While I was on tour in Iraq, my parents sent over the books and the DVD box set which helped while away some time...

Love Sharpe. Celebrating beating up the French is always great - a whole series of mini movies and books about it? even better

The only thing that irritates me about the TV series is the lack of budget. Obviously, being a UK TV production its not Hollywood scale but it is a bit galling when a massive battle that is supposed to involve countless regiments, really is depicted with about 20 blokes. Not only that but the South Essex regiment only has about 50 men in total

Also, you will notice the same extras pop up in different roles. One bloke is a British deserter in Sharpe's Gold and then pops up later as a French infantryman (replete with terrible French accent). But the TV series is a good diversion.

The books are excellent, of course.

Yes, there are a few people that crop up in several places and some imagination is required to "fill in the gaps" in the lines of soldiers

Yesterday also play Sharpe a few times a day (at least they were when I was off from work a while ago).

Its awesome, me and Laura sat through the lot when she first arrived, I was trying to make the wench appreciate our steadfast love of shooting French people as being from California she doesn't seem to get it!

Its not US wide though, from many of my conversations with American soldiers, Im pretty sure the Texans get it.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

I only recently discovered Sharpe via the tv series box set a friend lent me. It was great and I recommend them to everyone to try out.

Patrick helped me get over my illogical dislike for Irish people following a tour of South Armagh at 19..

Oh and since they were all nice to the Queen last week, Im positively best chums with our Irish cousins these days!

Sharpe's waterloo is a prime example of this!

Who can forget Sharpe's eagle the training scene bit - bit, spit, tap, aim shoot!

Whilst were on the subject, Who was the best villian of the series. Most people say Obadiah Hakeswill, but for my money the smoothness and scheming of Duco was quite funny. And of course Sir Henry...

Whom in England didn't grow up with Sharpe?
It is on Yesterday every sunday and even thogh it is a good few years old now (clocking up 20) its still a good watch.

Patrick Harper: "There are two kinds of officers, sir: killin' officers and murderin' officers. Killin' officers are poor old buggers that get you killed by mistake. Murderin' officers are mad, bad, old buggers that get you killed on purpose - for a country, for a religion, maybe even for a flag. You see that Major Hogan, sir? That's what I call a murderin' officer."

Sir Henry and the rest of his lot were all formulaic toff baddies. Hakeswill was a real psycho and the late Pete Postlethwaite portrayed him brilliantly.

I think his worst enemy was his bitch of a wife... I'd have taken her head off with a rifle.

bastard.

Just found this:

Wonder what their stats are? I reckon Harper has at least W3 and 'FNP'- he gets shot or stabbed nearly every episode and just keeps on going!

Meangreenstompa, formulaic he might have been, but he was pure comedy gold, especially in Sharpe's Sword. It wasn't in the book, but it was funny to see him get his comuppence.

Sharpe was and is brilliant.I have the box set and the books,i just have to get my hands on the stuff set in india after the victory at waterloo ( in the books, that took place before he joined the rifles ).Hakeswill ( pete postlethwaite ) was a great villain, with the twitch and talking to his ' mother ' but special mention must go to sir henry and his reraction every time he bumped into sharpe.Sharpes eagle and sharpes battle stand out for me.

Sort of...
Gaunt has a very different background and career (Ignoring the obvious sci-fi V. Napoleonic Era) but they both share the same philosophies...

Ah, for the times when the English weren't acutely embarrassed by people spontaneously bursting into song... I was in NI the other month and they do it all the time. Wonderful as it was, I still felt a slight twinge, owing to my mixed heritage.
