Anybody leave a finecast in their car and ave it melt yet? I've never had a problem with metal or plastic, but I have had resin warp. This stuff sounds like it's softer than the resins I'm used to. Anyone have any experience here? I would hate to have my army melt.

If it wouldn't melt, how could finecast models be produced?
Don't they make the models in moulds?

Resin casting is not the same as metal casting. While they both use a 'liquid' and a mould, they are very different processes.
With metal casting, you melt down ingots of the metal, and cast with the VERY HOT molten metal into a heat resistant mould (which are generally heat proof silicon rubber moulds).
If miscast, it can be remelted down and reused.
With resin, you mix a liquid up from two parts (normally) and pour it into the moulds. The material chemically sets into a solid that cannot usually be melted down (it CAN be dissolved, though). Unlike metal, bad resin casts cannot be melted down and reused. They can be ground up and used as filler for the next casting though.

Well there is thermaset plastic and thermaform plastic. One can be remelted the other just burns. I can't remember which is which. I've had other resin warp, that stuff is solid, this finecast stuff seams kind of bendy from the reviews I've seen, so I was just wondering if it warped easier than say forgeworld resin.

That is also true.
I don't personally know any hobby casters who will release sub-par product (I've heard such a creature does exist, but thankfully have never had to deal with them).

I've had metal models warp in heat, and I know you can reshape Finecast resin by putting it in hot water, but I didn't know it would melt in the sun. I may have to be more careful in the future.

I asked my local GW manager about this. He said that if the finecast models were dipped in boiled water, they became more flexible, so that you could make a model thats normally standing go into a kneeling position and things like that. I imagine that after painting the model it wouldn't go all "wicked witch of the east" on us but, having not bought a finecast mini yet I can't say for sure

No idea for the veracity of the story but apparently someone left a Finecast Gandalf on the windowsill yesterday and it melted.
I loved the comment I saw of the BoW Turn 8 chat.

Wow I feel sorry for him.
Would pinning weaken the model though I wonder?
Also and I may enquire about this when I go to my local GW next week to look at the finecast range, would GW replace any miniatures that have melted due to the heat as there is no "do not put in direct sun light or take to hot countries" warnings on the pack.

What kind of "heat" did you subject them to?? I've placed metal under a direct flame, and apart from heating the miniature up, nothing happened.......

Anyone put a Finecast model in the Microwave to see what happens yet?
ONLY JOKING! Don't try that at home kids!
Actually wonder if it would work for straightening warps? On a low setting/defrost
will let someone else try first.

I've never heard of a metal miniature warping from heat! What are you doing? Most resin will warp, but that is usually not gonna happen on a windowsill or in your car. It's nice to know I can warp and modify easy, but I would hate to have my paint jobs get ruined so easily.

People dont put plain minis by the window in their car.
They put it in foam transports.

I put miniatures in foam and the greenhouse effect has been enough to warp other resins, but only just. I also ave my minis set up by a window because natural light is better to paint with. I've come home to some warm minis before. I'm concerned that finecast might warp quite a bit.

The thing about "Does Finecast melt" is the situations that they are subject to. Why you would leave a part resin model in direct sunlight, knowing it can be made more flexable when heated, for hours on end? It baffles me. For me its not that GW are stupid that came up with Finecast but more a case of the idiots who leave models knowing they bend if heated out in sunlight for hours. Easiest way to keep finecast from bending/melting, dont keep them in such warm places. Now im not normally one for defending GW if anything I only used GW for models because of easy access, but thanks to WaylandGames that is changing. So dont think im becoming a GW apologist.

You are off your rocker, most resin doesn't wilt in the sun, and it looks like finecast doesn't either. You usually have to put them in very hot water or a hair dryer, much hotter than you are going to get from direct sunlight. Mr. Mystery even tried to bake them like cookies, the plastic base melted before the finecast, so while I wont say case closed just yet, its leaning that way.

Thats the thing though, people will say it melts in the sun just to moan about GW coz they are seen as "evil". I know fine well that the models wont melt in the sun, some others however seem to believe they will. I even seen the thread Mr Mystery made about cooking them(funny as hell might I add).
But think of it logically, say that resin did melt in sunlight/hot conditions(Conditions which you encounter everyday without the need of special equipment) would people honestly leave them out to melt?? Coz i know i wouldnt.

The argument is that GW shouldn't make a product that is pron to such problems. Miniatures are going to experience some pretty good temperature variations, from hot trunks to freezing cargo holds on airplanes. When you charge what GW charges for miniatures, then people have a reasonable expectation of quality.

Even then sometimes that is missed given miscasts lol, but i suppose there will be teethin problems with a new product.
