I was wondering what people think about the best way to keep a lord safe to continue his spell casting goodness throughout the game?
I've used the disk and had a lot of success with that however I want to try a different lore and since I can't take the disk if I do Im trying to figure out how I can keep him safe.
Perferably I would like to avoid the use of the maurauder because I hate the model, but if they really are the best way I might just have to bite the bullet.

You can stick him on a horse, and into a unit of marauder cav.
keep them behind the infantry for the hard cover (-2 to be shot). Add charmed shield and barded steed, and your wizard has a 2+ look out, followed by a 2+ ignore the 1st hit, followed by a 1+ save. You can toss a ward save on top of that, if you feel like you need more.
Give the cav mark of slaansh, and you won't ever panic either.

156 points gives you 10 marauders, with the mark of slaanesh and light armor (5+ armor).
You're also fast cav, so you can dance around the table pretty effectively.

That could work, but that unit is pretty squishy. Though, it is cheap and fast.....

You could put him in a Warrior unit, but It is painful when they blow up and take out such expensive troops. I know you said you don't like the Marauder models, but I think I fat block is the best for this job. If your not playing at GW or tournaments, you may pursue some sort of alternative model or a conversion?

I have mine sitting in a warriors block make sure one of your casters has puppet it makes a HUGE difference.
My list is also all tzeentch so yea it just feels right to put em in those blocks.

I would say stick with tz magic its quite nasty and the bonus ward and bonus to casting well I dont really see a down side toss on a spell familiar and you cast tz nastiness.

I like that idea of the maurauder horsemen. Ill need to get/make a model with the sorcerer on a horse to try it out but it sounds like it could be effective.

I've not had much luck sticking my wizard in with the warriors in the past. A warrior unit is far to valuable to keep out of combat yet the moment they get into combat my options for spell casting is very limited. Not to mention most people I play against direct as many attacks against him as possible. Hes got some good protection of course but nothing is perfect . Ill give it another try though as the lores I want to try are mostly for buffing and debuffing which I can still do when locked in combat.

The Tzeentch lore is good no doubt cowpow. But I run a mostly khorn list (only thing that isn't is my cannon and my sorcerer). And I feel that I might get more bang for my buck with some of the buffs from heavens and debuffs from shadow. Especially considering most of my games are either against tomb kings or deamons which kinda kills one of the best spells in the lore :(

Maybe move him out of the unit right befor the warriors charge and set him somewhere safe.

Maybe Keep him on a disc why mess with somethig that works maybe put him on a dragon or manticore so he can get around.

Id Love to put him on a dragon, if only for the fact dragons are awesome. Alas most of my games are 2500 points so not enough for both lord and dragon :(.

And I'm not saying the disk is bad. Hell the disk and lore might be the greatest things ever. But I want to give some other options a fair shake before I make that call. Besides playing the exact same list over and over and over again is boaring. I want to mix it up a bit

You could put him on a flying carpet, and still pick up the 4+ ward (and charmed shield).
3+ armor, 4+ ward, ignore a hit, and you still get a look out roll.
Can't join units, but it does let you play with the other lores.

Dragon Sorceror with lore of death is AMAZING. I did it just for grins, and soul blighted (-1 str, -1 toughness) dudes entire army! One of the main problems with the lore of death is the range, so a flyer negates this...

I belive we may be having this conversation backwards. Perhaps you should tell us which lore you want to try and we can try to come up with the best pick for that situation.

Sick idea Glimpse you just gave me a great excuse to but and convert a dragon.

And ya let us know I havent used all lores but I have used a few.

Soul bight is only -1 Toughness (no effect on strength).
Works just as well on the 50 point magic carpet as it does on the 360 point dragon... except the carpet is 310 points cheaper and lets you take a look out roll.

Ah, but the carpet doesn't look as cool. Additionally, it's more exciting when you know your 360 point mount can be taken out by a lucky cannon or bolt thrower.

Read it again. The -1 for Strength is on the line above, but it definitely says "-1 Strength and -1 Toughness."

One of these days, I'd like to design a viable dragon list for 3k points or so.

Whether your run the sorc or combat monster, he has to have the stubborn crown. I had someone get lucky in a round of combat and run him down. I wanted to cry.

This should probally be a different thread, but I think about the best support. You use a fatty unit of knights and a the banners that give you +1 movement, or the one that give you re rolls. This would give you 2 or units to support. If you are going for the soulblight bomb, a pair of hell cannons would own.....

Agreed getting a dragon run down has got to be super depressing :( but supported by angry knights who dsnt just love that.

Not just knights comrad, you can give Chaos warriors the movement banner or the ramage standard to reroll the charge. I picture a Tri-fecta of pain hitting the target!

I know what you mean. I'm going to guess razor and flaming banners? There are many sacrifices to be made for the dragon list, but a BSB would mean that you could have 2 banners in the same unit, and you might not have to loose them all.

Razor flaming rage banner (cuz its an all tz list) rap standard.
But the bsb needs stuff rather than a banner.
