Has anyone got any good tips for painting smaller areas like the back of a powerfist or down a chainsword with hazard lines. Not sure if thats what you call them but the alternating black and yellow diagonal stripes. Not something I have ever really managed to do with any degree of success. Any help or tips greatly appreciated

Masking tape is probably the best bet. Paint the whole power fist black (or whatever colour you wish to alternate with) then cut some masking tape into small strips and mask off the fist in diagonal lines. Paint yellow where you haven't masked, peel off the masking tape and there you are. Alternatively, if you have a steady hand you can try doing it freehand but unless you are really, really good, you won't match the crisp lines that you get by masking. I'd paint the yellow first, as it is a pain to get an even coat with it. Black is much easier to then apply on top.

I find it's possible to do neatly with a brush, just try to use the flat side of the brush to get a good straight line. And obviously do the black on top of the yellow and not the other way around!
If you want it perfect perfect, then use tape to mask it. Paint the line, then let it dry. The pull the tape off and repeat ad naseum.

Filbert got it on the head there, just paint it up black and use small strips of masking tape to create your lines then block in the yellow colours and pull the tape back off, bingo!

Very true. Although the foundation Iyanden Darksun gives pretty good coverage over black now.

I had not thought of doing masking tape on a really really small scale like that. My instict says do yellow and black over the top but thanks for your help guys I will have a bash at this soon.

Paint away from the masking tape as colour may seep under the tape if you brush the paint into the tape.

Indeed, I've tried the masking tape thing and that is exactly what happened, it is especially difficult on curved surfaces, might have more luck with airbrushing.
Probably the neatest system I have seen is to make your own transfers using an inkjet printer and transfer paper. Ouze has already said this better in other topics So i'll just quote him...
Ouze wrote:1.) You will need a computer, some kind of graphics program, and an inkjet printer.
2.) You will need inkjet printer transfer sheets in either white or clear, as well as a can of high-gloss spray paint. The glossier the better.
3.) Go ahead and design your transfers in your graphics program, or download them from somewhere. Remember that inkjet printers do not print white, they leave white sections clear. If you use white paper, you'll need to trim each detail carefully. There is a better tutorial for doing this here.
4.) There is a great tutorial here for actually applying them.

Smacks thanks for that, had not even considered the thought of making your own tranfers.

Yeah, I'm not sure if Ouze uses transfers for this in particular, but he certainly has done some remarkably neat hazard lines. See for yourself...

Maybe if we are lucky he will see this and tell us his secret :p

I personally used masking tape and an Xacto knife to do the deed (especially for the scale you're looking at).
Gotta look at doing transfers though... an excellent thought

I paint mine by hand, but I cheat and use a Copic Pigment-Liner for the black. Much easier to get straight than a brush. And its easier to get nice looking yellow if you do it first and then put the black over.

Also another way of doing it and making it look straight is tape, and if it isn't quite straight just go rougly along the edges with a lighter yellow, makes it look straighter
